Affairs in Canada West— Movement of the Gaver- or General—Sir Allan McNub—The Disap- Pointment of Lord Elgin—Theatricals, c., &¢- Her Majesty’s lieges in Toronto were somewhat ‘estomshed on Wednesday evening, by the news that Lord Elgin had at Inst emerged froin his her- mitage at Monklands, and embarked at Lachine, on board the mail boat Highlander, en route for Niagara Falls. It afterwards tranepired that the reason of thi hasty departure was a desire on the part of Loid Ki, in to meet and converse with Ge- neral Taylor on the subject of the reciprocity bill, now #0 keenly agitated on this side of line 45—not, asgwas sx d atthe Fallson Tuesday, on the sub- ject of annexation. His lordship’s design, what- ever it may have been, was, however, rather un- fortunstely frustrated, as General Taylor was to leave the Fall. for Poff lo. oa thener forthe Avon Springs, on Thursday morning; whereas the Gic- vernor General could only reach the Falls to-day. The tories are a numerous body in the cities and towns, and they know well how to bluster and make a noise ; but the farmers—the bone »nd sinew of the conna- try—go heart ard hand with the Governor on the question Istrly in dixyute, and they will flock into Toronto by thensands, on a moment's notices armed, if needs be—to receive him. We are all so much occupied warching the movements of the Jovernor, and preparing for his reception, that litt'e else is thought of. The arrangements for printing the Canadian [a- ent are neatly completed, and the first num- ber will issue in about three weeks from this time.
