When it rains it pours. ‘Two important arrivals, one from the eld Continent and the other from the Pacific, came in on ue inone day. The news from Europe ieno sooner read, collated and talked about, than, perhaps, equally important news comes to us from California. Republics may be going, or gone down in Europe ; but we have something lett with which we can console ourselves, notwithstending. New gold mines are discovered, industry is being organized, a mighty new republic is putting forth its first buds on the far distant shores of the At- lantic. i We refer our readers, for the particulars of the important news from California, to another part of this day’s Herald. This news is interesting in a variety of aspects. The products of the gold mines are now coming to us regularly by every steamer. Over half a million of dollars worth reached u, yesterday, in a regular way, and the probability is that every future arrival will bring us a larger sum | dozen speakers, and finally adopted, from that productive and remarkable region. New mines, it seemn, are being discovered in various parts of California, to take the place, it would ap. pear, of the old placers, which have been exhausted by the enterprise, industry and avidity of the ad- venturers. who have flocked thither. The new republic, elusterimg around San Francisco, giv: halt; Prominent and healthy signs of constitutional vi- tality. The people of California, those adventurers, that congregation of loafers, as they are called, who ex- cite the ridicule of the Europeans, show more ap- ttude for republican government, for quelling riots, for punishing the wicked, and for governing them- | selves in a proper way, than the people of the highly civilized capital of Paris, or of any other great metropolis in Europe. And yet not fone-halt of the adventurere, the reputed loafers, who were on their way that to remarkable region, had reached there at the time reterred to, ion In that region a Such is the general character of the important intelligence just received from California, from that new and wonderful El Dorado, that beaw ideal of nationality, which has Jeaped into existence with the rapidity of electricity, on the shores of the Pacific, under the fostering care of this great and mighty mother of American republics. nothing for California. highway to prosperity, wealth and greatness. But we learn, by the way of Washington, throagh our correspondent im that city, that an attempt at revo- ‘ation was recently made in that ieland, the extent J particalars of which are hardly yet kn®wn in the diplomatic circles in the capital. Ove of the most remarkable features of this attempt at revo- Juin is the disaffection of the military—an m- ance of which is given by our correspondent. This intellhgence comes to us in a roandabout way, through diplomatic channels, or through the office of the Secretary of State, or by the Spamieh The steamer Faleom railed this morning for Chagres Ambaseador ; but we think it may be relied upon, | ¥!#h ® fair complement of passengers, and that its character, from the channel through which it reaghes ue, is even worse than what it bears frem perusal. ° ‘We can't, however, pass encomiums on the | recent conduet of the Ameriean cabinet, as regards its reeent action in braeing the abduction cave at NewOrleang, as well as zens, under the pretence that they were levying war ogainst the Queen of Spain, with whom we ere atamuty. The efforts of the Cuban patriots to incite men ef action and energy from this eountry in aid of the great enterprize, and to import from our shores thore implements of war necessary for the enterprize, are only consistent with the conduet which our forefathers adopted towards France, in ovr revolutionary history of the last century. But the patriots of Caba have found | an enemy in the present cabinet in Washing. ton; and the despotic dynasty ot Isabella of Spain, has been blessed with a friend and anally in theAmerican government, more potent for the eon- tin found in any other part of the world. The conduct of our government, in reference to that affair, de- | nerves a searching and burning examination. The burnburners have nominated only their share, four candidates, viz:— of the ase soon Weleb Jr. for Treasurer, and Alexander Campbell for State Engineer.
