The people, who thus have an opportunity of re- ceiving his blossing, are filled with consolation. We gave, last week, an allocution of His Holinces, which he made in the chapel of the Cathedral of Gacts on a solemn occasion. This occasion was nothing less solemn than the attestation of the decree declaring the heroic virtues of Anthony Mary Zaccaria, foundor of the congregation of regular clericts, called Barnubites, The Pope said the muss in the cathedral, assisted by Cardinals Sforza and Antonelli, Hoafterwards entered the sacristy, where he «at down on the throne that had been prepared, and listened to the reading of the de- cree, surrounded by Cardinals Macchi, Lambraschini, and others. The daring riders, the eagacious horses, the astonishing grouping and posturing of the Rivers family, went off with re- newed applause. The afterpiece, called “Monsiour Moulinet,’’ convulsed the audience with laughter. ‘This charming circus is really quite a treat for the up town folks, and well they may say that they will be sorry when it closes for the season. The Appointments—The Mission to Mexico, and various other matters. The appointments, understood to be made ia cabinet council to-day, have relieved considera- bly the President and his ministerial household of the immediate Pressure upon them. Those of Sken Smith and John Young were ex- pected, and have been regarded as the direct sub- Jects before the cabinet for some days past ; those of the Commissioner of Public Buildings, vend of the Warden of the District Penitentiary were net generally anticipated. There were three principal candid: for Con. missioner ($2,000 @ year, with a margin for per quisites), to wit— Mr. W. A. Bradley, lawyer, Clay whig. Mr. Robert Mills, architect, Taylor democrat. Mr. Ignatius Mudd, merchant, ‘Taylor whig. Mr. Mills was sustained by Mr. Ewing, Mr. Brad- ley by Mr. Clayton, and Mr. Mudd by Mr. Preston and Mr, Johnson. Mr. Bradley was the orthodox nominee of the city whigs, and they are at liberty to consider themselves defeated in the appointment tise has nee ate ce Mr. Mudd. The three no- ninees were ae ea wes of this city, and all highly respect- But the reported appointment of Thomas Fitman as Warden of the Penitentiary, hag actually ex- cited a glow of indignation among the old whigs. Fitman 1s an Irishman, a saddler by vocation, and correspondent of several Irish papers, and an ac- tive and industrious man in both capacities. Asa politician the whiga consider him a renegade d mocrat—a * fitty-four forty or fight” looofenne and an opposer of Polk, mainly because he was toe much of a Presbyterian in religion and in cs, Fitman being a good Catholle, and a friead of TSthe ‘candidate of the old Wh The candidate of the old Whigs was Captain Goddard, the efficient and fearlesaly faithful Chief of Police, who deserves a service of plate for his noble exertions, for the last five or six years, in maintaining the peace of the city. No better ap- pointment could have been made; but reasons of policy sometimes overrule all other considerations, and the old Whigs must consent to the rule. Ex-Governor Nathaniel P. Talmadge is a candi- date for the mission to Mexico, but the place is Togarded as resting between him and Balie Peyton. he city, for some days past, has been enlivened by the presence of a hardy set of mail contractors, for the New York and New England sections, ans for certain new post routes in various parts of the Union. They have paid their respects to the Post- master General and the President, and were much pleased with their reception in both cases. Tasir impression is, that Mr. Collamer will administer the department with energy and ability. He is eer- tainly an able and active man. We understand that Capt. Anderson’s overland detachment, from this city, have left for Fort Smith, where they will join the grand caravan, under an United States’ escort of dragoons, na Santa Fe and Gila, for the placeras of the Yuba, the Consumers, the Mickelummes, and the Rio de los Americanos, the Rio de los Plumos, and‘the Sacramento. w. The Doings of the Day. The President kept open house to-day. We went uptosee him. There were but a dozen persone present when we entered the eliptical saloon, and there was perhaps no greater number present at any time between twelve and two o'clock. The secret is easily solved. Applications for office have first to be made to the heads of the departments to which they belong. The heads of the departments were in their respective offices, and the applicants for office were prosecuting their business with them.— At twelve o’clock one would have thought there was a “stated preaching of the gospel” at the Treasury Department, from the number of visiters atthe vestibule. Philadelphia, Baltimore, and New York, were amply represented among the devotees dancing attendunce upon the tall administrator of the offices attached to the financial branch of the government. Mr. Collamer, also, had his detach- ments of friends, although he has been busied with the proposals of the fine body of mail contractors intown. And by the way, it is amusing to observe the coldness existing between the different candi- dates for the same office. Though they may have been friends for a life-time, they don’t know each other in Washington. For instance, a half-dozen applicants for the collectorship at Philadelphia met at breakfast at Willard’s, yesterday, and scarcely @ man of them had the patience to finish a single cup of coffee. Each of them appeared to be astonished and indignant, at the impudence of the rest, in showing their faces as the petitioners for an office to which he had the only rightful claim. But, alto- zether, the office-seekers on hand are respectuble lcoking men, and comport themselves with a proper circumepection. hs ‘There ae to be no affinity between Sken Smith and Lewis C. Levin, both leaders of the natives of Philadelphia; and the opposition of the fi other Mattrasses, Bedding, & Rosewood ! comt SEDO, O THE LADIES.—J. W. Fitman to the distriet penitentiary, is said to have been the work of Gov. ohnston, of Pennsylvania. Fitman, (a good Irish: man,) did some service among his countrymen i EL county, in behalf of the whig cause, ~ and the Governor stood up to him; and iea Mr. | Ewing presented his man, Old Zack presented Fitman, and, as usual, Old Zack won the day. It is now pretty [opatats conceded, that Gen. oe de was friendly to the Walker amendment. Why not? It not only avoided the diffieulty om the negro question, but it definitively settled the Texus boundary dispute, by giving all of New Mexico to Texas, east of the Rio Grande, includ- ing Santa Fe, and nine tenths of the territory. But it this concession is implied in the resolutions of annexation, why not fulfil it? It is just as clearly admitted that Gen. Taylor would have been | eatiefied with Webster’s amendment, which trans- | ferred the slavery and the boundary disputes to the | next session of Congress; so that, after all, the Pre- sident stands entirely uncommitted on both ques- tions. He has managed this subject with singular adroitness. i ; . Mr. Clayton, independently of other considera- tions, it is said, is getting tired of the labors of hie | office, and if he desires to go to England for « | change, Mr. Meredith will take his place, and Mr. Evans will be promoted to the treasury, the only | man, perhaps, in the Union, capable of competing at all with the admirable system of R. J, Walker, as he practically carried it out. There is certainly no better financier in the whig ranks than George | Evans. Meantime he accepts his appointment om | the Mexican board, and will make clean work | that business. mn | . Among the members of the last Congress still | in town, are Mesers. Benton, Foote, Westcott, and Mangum, of the Senate; and Messrs. Trumia Smith, Eowden, of Alabama, Haskell, of ‘Tennee- ; see, Brown, of Mississippi, and Bowlin, of Mo., of the House. gs The cabinet officers, it is reported, haye been doing something to-day for cabinet confirmation omorrow.
