The net earnings, or the profits after deducting expenses, are $146,072 48, which would afford a dividend of 93 per cet per annum on the capital stock, and leave « surplus of $18,175 98, During the year 1847, the number of through pe sepgers, from Cincinnati to Springfield was 26.0! the number of passengers to and from intermediate places was 51,468—whole number, 87.655. The comple- tion of the road from Xenia to Columbus is promised within the present year. A dey or two since we gave a statement, emanati: from those interested in the New York and New Haven Railroad Company, relative to the difficulties growing out of the refusal of the Hartford and New Hai Railroad Company to make the connection in trains, so that through passengers would experience no de. tention ordeley. The remarks made at the time al luded to were calculated to throw all the blame upon the Hartford Company; and as there is always two sides to every story, it s no more than justice that both parties should have a hearing, before the public mind Decomes made up. It appears that om the 18th of De- cember last, one week before the through trains of the New York and New Haven road commenced running, the Hartford Company formally invited proposals from the New Haven Company for the perfection of the through line, and the accommodation of through pas. sengers. In this notice it was rtated that the Hartford company having a line of steamboats ranaing between New York and New Haven, it- must be borne in mind that in the terms proposed the purchase ef there boats at a fair valuation must bedaly considered. Without psying proper attention to this proposition, the New York and New Haven Company, proceeded in the completion of ite road, and to the arrangement of running time, &o., independent of the hours which bad been so long established by the Hart- ford Company. About ten days after the line was opened through from New York to New Haven, that company first made known its wish to perfect an ar, rangement with the Hartford line. Negotiations then commenced, and have been continued up to this time without having resulted in anything satisfactory to either company. The sssertion that the Hartford Company have refused fair and equitable terms is offi- cially denied. It is true that it has made the pur” ‘The | bebeld'st Syracure, Johu A. According | €0 tie ghere will be dividend next July of some kind, within cach or new stock, Tho sixth annual report of the Little Miam! Rail- yond Company gives gratifying evidence of the suooess chase ef the boats forming the line between this city and New Haven, an item of some importance in the arrangement; but the authority from which we deri the information denies aljthe statements rslative to ox, orbitant charges made fcr the boats or other property, necessary for the Hertford Company to dispore of in the event of forming the through connection. Their oata would be vaelss on thst line, and they would bave to asek some other place of employme: andthe Haven Company expect. teo muoh, if they expect the Hartford Company to form connection which will ruin its mboat line. It must be borne in mind that the Hartford Company gain nothing by connecting with the New Haven Road, and it isaq tion if the travelling public would gain anything by a withdrawal of the boateto and from New Haven, as opposition reduces the ccst “f transportation and expe Gition of travel, In the event of these companies nog agreeing upon terms, and run theirtraing, independent of each other, the boats would reduce the price of pas- sage between New York and New Haven to the lowest peints. If the boats ean carry passengers for fifty cents per head, and the ralroad charges one dollar and fifty cents, it follows that the boats would carry a majority of the passengers. It therefore is all importent that the New Haven Railroad Com- pany should have the control of the steam- boat line, to obtain which it is necessary some contract should be made with the Hartford Com- pany, 80 that any etber steamboat company may not be able to put boats on the line and con- nect with the road. In any contract the Hartford Company may make, it must of course be stipulated that no steamboat line will be placed upon equal footing, and this monopoly guaranteed to the Ne’ Haven Railroad, will be invaluable to that company. ‘We have thus given the other side of the story, and drawn our inferences from it. 1¢ would be well for the Hartford Company to publish an official report of the proceedings as they have progressed, and the present position of the negotiations, so that the New Haven Company may make a counter statement, if possible, and the public be put in possession of all the facts con- nected with thissffair. This matter has created agreat excitement, and it is necessary that the two companies should acknowledge or refute the acousations made We wish to give both an opportunity to do 60, and trust some satiefactory arrangement of existing difficulties will epeedily be made. There has been much mystery of late on tins subject, as well as on the composition of the new eabinet. The newspapers have been flooded with surmises on these points. Cabinet after cabinet has been constructed and re- constructed, until no one placed any confidence 1m the lists—all of which, of course, professed to come from the most reliable sources. Views of all kinds have been attributed to the General, under the im- preesion that, if erroneous, they would soon be for- gotten ; but, if correct, they could afterwards be referred to as evidence of the accurate mformation of the journals which publiehed them. It has beem generally supposed that few of the leading pola ucians, either here or at the North, know muck on such a subject. ‘ This surmise is perfectly cor- rect. There has been a mystery about the cabinet, arising from the fact that the General has net finished his deliberations or made up his mind de- finitely with regard to its composition. With res pect to the cabinet, however, there are ope or twe points which you may regard as settled and fixed. As soon as the General was elected, he detes- mined, before he tormed his cabinet at all, to con- sult Mr. Crittenden, of Kentucky. General Tay- lor, 1 beheve, has already offered Mr. Crittendem any pogition in the cabinet that he may consider best suited to his habits or inclination. He reposes entire confidence in Mr. Critteaden, and has there- fore selected him as his principal adviser, or pnme minister, with the option of taking the first post- tion in the new cabinet. Yet, although Mr. Crit- tenden, by this offer of the President elect, may be considered as having the Secretaryship of State at his disposal, it is supposed that he will be moag likely to prefer the office of Attorney General of the United States—the same post, he occupied | during the month’s administration of Gen>ray | Harrison. Mr. Crittenden, it is thought, wishes to avoid the iabors and cares connected with the woeful | Secretaryship of State, and will, therefore, acoept the Attorney-Generalship, which is less laborious and more congenial to his habits; while he wily in that position, to be near the General, at Washington, and still to retain the confidential post of first and principal ad- ser to the President himself. Yet, notwith- standing this view of Mr. Criitenden’s probable position. I would not be surprised if he should | change his mind before the fourth ef March, and actually take the State Department; probably being induced to take such a position trom its giving him a higher rank in the cabinet and the country, and investing him with more commanding 1n- fluence tor his future purposes. Mr Crittendenis now Governor of Kentucky, and there have beea frequent letters and communications betweea the General and him on these matters. Oa the journey of the President elect for Washington, next month, he will undoubtedly visit Mr. Crittenden in Keat- ucky, and will consult him more particularly om this and other matters. ‘With reepect to the other members of the cabi net, I am very certain that nothing defiaite has yet been determined on, with the excep- tion’ of the Postmaster General. For this of- fice there is the strongest probability that Toman Smith, ef Connecticut, has beem offered the appointment. But even on this very point there is nothing ea and definitely hxed, and probabl mall not be till the ye od of the General with Mr. Crittenden, on his wa’ Washington. The other members of the haters will be selected from different sections of the coun- try, according to the position aad reputation of the eligible candidates; but excluding trom the selee- ion, as now understood, both theStates of Louw ana and New York. No cabine icer will be selected from either of these States. This detem~ mination has aiisen from the circumstance of the one furnishing the President, and the other the Vice President, atthe recentelection; and the Gene- ral would, consequently, feel a delicacy and impro- priety in giving either the one or the other aa addt- Fonal high cabinet officer. Mr.Berrien, ot Georgia, Mr. Clayton, of Delaware, and Mr. Reverdy John- 60n, of aryland, are all very much esteemed by General Taylor; but itis very doubttul whether Mr, Berrien, of Georgie, can be appointed to such a post, because, as learn, Mr Crittenden entertains no small antipathy to the Georgian Synator—tor what reason, J do not understand ; but this p-oba- bly will prove adverse to the chances of Mr. Ber- tien. Mr. T. B. King, whom [ see put forward by the Northern journals, has not been much spokea cf; nor have I heard much said of Mr. Schenck, of ‘Ohio; although it is probable that these and other distinguished men of the whig party, are more talked cf at Washington for particular posts than they have been at Baten Rouge. I under- stand that Joseph Grinoell, of Mass , has been ve earnestly recommerded to the General by sere correspondents in New York and New England, tor the office of Secretary of the Treasury. Proba- bly Mr Moses H. Grinnell,ot New York, may know | more of thease movements; but it 18, as yet, very doubtful whether Joseph Grinnell, Mr. Abbot Lawrence. or Mr. Evans, of Maine, may bz the | succeseful candidate for ayost in the new cabi- net. If Truman Smith, of New Englaod, should | be appointed Postmaster General, which is the only uppointment after Mr. Crittenden, that seems | as yet prebable, it is likely that this will be all chat New England’ will get in the way of cabinet officers. Having disposed ef the cabinet, as far as my in- | formetion can come now to the measures | and general Ende of the new admiatetra- | uon With regard to this point, one thiag is nearly certain, that Gen Taylor’ wadministration will be much stronger in favor of whig policy in regard te men, and probably ulumately ia regard to mea sures, than any one has been led to sup ove by the letters published from. him before his election 1 am more and more convinced, from what t hi heard from several gentlemen who have been re cently up the river, of the accuracy ‘of this state- ment There are very few of the leading men among the democratic party for whom the General entertains any very high opinion. Mr. Polk, Mr. Walker, and Mr. Marcy are all utterly repugaant te his views and derby on Secretary Marcy stripped him of his ai my before the battle of Buroa Vieta, for the purpose ot giving a chance to Gen, Scott ‘to make the campaign he did. It was by at intrigue of General Marcy with the friends. of General Scott in New York, that the great body of the regulars were taken trom Gen, Taylor subsequent to the capture of Moaterey—leaviug him at the mercy of Santa Anna, had it not been for the happy and providential aid which he after- wards received from General Wool. Ihave ander- stood that the General hus been fully apprised ail the movements connected with that intrigue, | Which was Rg on og friends of Gener | Scott in New York and New Jersey, with Secre- 1y Marcy, and which had for ita object the utter prostrauion of General Taylor, who was entirely aba doned to the immense army brought dowa ainst him from the mountans to Bu-a Vista At that period, the Courier and fa- quver, of New York, was full of 118 eulogiums o1 General Scott, and took very active steps, obtruding him tere the pablie RC ed | of bringin, im out as \ the forure J idency. Itis believed here that the intrigue te destroy General Taylor would have succeeded, and that his army woald have been destroyed, ond himeelf disgraced, by the immease hordes of Santa Anna, but for the efficient reum- force ment which he received from General Wool, Thave a few disclosures to make in these matters, that will rstomah some of those in New Yor who are now bold in their applications to Gene: Toylor tor office, and professing spl the great est fiendship, while at that er did alt they could to ruin General Taylor ‘= aren neral Scott, with the view of ultimatel the latter Preeident, in place of General Tayion x Seeretary Marcy, therefore, and the Wal intriguers, are in utter detestation here. Mr. Buchanan is the only man of the old admunistra- tion for whom General Taylor entertams any te spect, ond sl respect for him is generous in the ss eet de pentectly satisfied, from what I have heard,
