TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE, Arr Letter from Hon, David Wilmot. Pritaveceusa, Nov. 3, 1848, ‘The editor of the Repullicun has just received a let- ter from Hon. David Wilmot, dated Towanda, Oot. 30, im which he indignantly denies having deserted Van Buren, and gone to the support of Cass. He also eays:— 4 “I have made more than twenty- ‘ve specohes before poe meetings in the district, pending my elvetion, im all of which I avowed my opposition to Cass, an my entire support of Van Bureo; and my most eara-st and aotive efforts wanting between this ie now the centre of ‘operations of the wholn Cass party of State. Yours, ko. D. WiLMOr.” Democratic Torchlight Procession. Puitavacenia, Nov. 3, 1848, The torchlight procession of the democrats, this evening, is large, imposing, and enthu-iastic. Terrible Railroad Accident, Boston, Nov. 3, 1848, ‘The extra train from Lynn for Salem, came in oolli- sion with the extra train from Salem for Marblehead, at the junction of Marbiehvad branch, about three quarters of a mile out of Salem, soon after 12 o’clook last night, and killed six persopy and wounded ten or fifteen more. Those k)lied, aud nearly all those in- jured, were on the Marblehead train, and belonged to that place. The persons killed were John Cloon, Samuel Man- Ring, Nathaniel Roundy, Henry Frifoy, John Cros end a boy, name unknown This express was probably carrying our reporter with Mr, Webster's speech, made last night, at Lynn t the f Disaster on St. Clair River, Burvato, Nov. 3—P, M. The brig Empire, with a full load of merchandise bound to Chicago, was run into by the propellor Prinoeton, on Wednesday night, forty miles above St, Clair river, and sunk in twenty-four feet water. The ‘vessel was insured. Markets. Burrato, Nov 3—P. M. Reovipts within the past tweoty four hours :—Flour, 7.000 bbls. ; wheat, 36,000 bushels ; corn, 30,000 do. From what we have seen and heard, however, we doubt very much the ability of Mr. Fry to accomplish such a work. He has, indeed, some good materials ; but the. choruses, scenery and details are exceedingly defective, and most miserably arranged. The chorus singing at his theatre 1s a specimen of bawling and noise almost equal to a dozen troups of negro minstrels; and the scenery the veriest daubs ever stuck up in a shilling theatre. They would not be tolerated at the Bowery. The attendance on the first night was pretty fair, as first nights generally are. But the attempt to establish two distinct classes of society here— refined and vulgar, aristocracy ana low born—as we have seen attempted in making a line between ecription nights and ‘extra mghts,” wil “Hiardly be tolerated, we should thiak, in a comma- nity like that of New York. Another very curious, but questionable, poiat in the new management of the Opera, is the arrange- ment by which Mr. I'ry controls all the news- papers, and directs them to attack this artist and puff that one, according to instructions issued from his sanctum. We have seen specimens of the working of this system, in the ungentlemanly and ungallant treatment which Madame Pico and ‘Teresa Troffi received; and we perceive that the Courter and Enquirer, one of his organs, reiterates the mean insinuations and despicable remarks with which the latter was assailed and persecuted while periorming amid so many diffi- culties in Philadelphia. We have much to say on this subject before we finish, if the project don’t finish itself before we get time. ~ Joux Tar@rr anv THE Op Democracy out FoR Tayior.—John Turgee, one of the oldest, most influential, and 1espectable of the democratic politicians of this city, and well known here in political matters for the last th:rty years, has, we believe, abandoned the free soil electoral ticket, and declared his intention to vote for Genera) Taylor. So has Jonathan I. Coddington, and many other old democrats. - John Targee 1s well known to the old politicians of this city, as having been the principal spoke of the wheel that formerly ran Martin Van Buren to power. He has ever been an ardent and true friend of the Kinderhook statesmau; but, in the recent free soil movement, he does not seem to agree, to the same extent, with his followers. Mr. Targee will vote for Dix as Governor, and General Taylor as President; and we have no doubt but many of the good old barnburners will make up their minds to perform the same feat next Tues- day. Great changes are going on. The Jersey Congresstonal Election. To THe Epitox ov THE Heras You appear to be at a 1 ss to acceunt for that “fan- niest of all fanny nominations,’ the nomination of James G. King, “the financier and broker, of Wail street, to reprerent @ portion cf ibe pecple of New Jersey” in the next Congres; but you would have found little difficulty in doing so bad you known that this State is governed by three powerful moaopolies— the lottery brokers of Jersey City— he Jersey City ferry monopolists—and the railroad managers The lottery interest is represented in the present Congress by Mr. Gregory, who now retires to make way for the Ferry Association, which is to be represented by Mr. King, who will, in turn, probably retire to maxe way for a nominee of the raiiroad interest These several portions of the great ruling power of the State em- brace both whigs and democra'r; and {t matters little to them which political power ruccees at the elections, for they iw divide the spoil They are a sort o' family patty, always actiog together, and as they always control those whe are elected to office, they may safely leave to the people the enjoyment that re- aulte from going through the form of election y We doubt whether the Wall street financier, by roosting in New Jersey, can make a rotten borough of;that State. General Taylor will get its electoral vove; and that honest, sound repub- lican, and good whig, Joe Hollingsworth, ot Newark, who is up for Congress in the fifth dis- trict, in opposition to James G. King, the Wall street broker, will follow in the wake of Rough and Ready. New Jersey cannot be made a rotten borough this year. Tue Democratic Mertine Last Evgnine.— ‘We have on hand a report of the democratic meeting which took place at Tammany Hall last evening ; but our space is so much occupied with foreign news, that we cannot possibly find room for it in to-day’s paper. We may be able to pub- lish it to-morrow. Sporting Intelligence. Trottinc Matcues —Uwo trotting matches were decided yesterday afternoon, at the Union Course Tho attendance was, an the Yankees say, rather sparse; but that did not affect the trotting, for the eport war excellent notwithstanding. [tis true that neither Lady Suffolk, Moscow, nor Sutton engaged; neither did Jack Rossiter, Grey Eagle, or Black Hawk, with their two and «halftime; yet those who visited the track witnesred werll®contested beats and very good time, in both matches. James Mownox is tHe Fisup.—We understand that Col. James Monroe. so well known to the public, has been put forward by his friends as an independent date for Congress from the sixth district, aud strong hopes of his election are entertained. Colonel Monrce is an able, active, and honorable man, and in case of his clection, would. without doubt, make an ex- cellent representative. He is put forward ia opposi- tion tothe Fourlerite and the anti Irishman, and it would be a goed thing if the hunkers and barnburners would unite in supporting him, Tue Banssuaner Mextino.—The meeting of the barnburners came off last night, at Vauxhall, being the first of a series, which was marked with a perfect medley of enthusiasm and disorder. The Hon. John M. Niles, of Connecticut, spoke until the people ba- came so impatient that they endeavored to hiss and groan bim off the stand; but hestuck out like a martyr. Dur reporter informs us that it was one of the richest meetings of the campaign. An Extra Herald was issued immediately after. and the nature of the | advices soon became generally known throughout the city, Tho political intelligence is highly important. ‘The whole of Europe appears to be in a state of revo- lution; one vast political cauldron, boiling over with the intensity of its interna’, fires. Timo, instead of | allaying the excitement and quieting the public mind, appears to agitate it still more deeply, and do velope thore feclings which at first were unheard of Itis now evident that nothing short of a univerral political revolution throughout the continent of Europe, will satisfy the masses. Europe isin a state | of fermentation, and ral changes will be expo- rienced, and much time elapse before anything like order will grow out of the terrible state of coofusion now existing. Such revolations do not subside ina month or @ year; years will hardly suffice to conaoli- date and give strength to the new governments which will ultimately take the place of those tottering and falling to the ground, We can, in our security and quiet, hardly realize the utter annihilation of all po- litical power, upon such 8 movement of the masses as has taken place in the principal countries of Europe- ‘We bave grown up under a republican form of govera- ment, and have become #0 accustomed to the power of the people, that we cannot imagine what » revulsion must take place in any country, when the people of that country at once throw eff the rule of kings, and under- take to govern themselves, They run riot for a time, nd the removal of all restraint makes them almost mad with joy. Fortunately, the population of this, ntry was limited when our revolution took place nd those Were times when the establishment of a re- public wasn very doubtful question, The immeni population of Europe has been born and educated w der monarchies, and the people are ignorant of even the theory of gelf-government. It is not, therefore, at «it wonderful that eo much coufusion existe in the Ww minds of those who are delegeted to form s republic— that so much difference of opinion exiets ameng the masses. They are all honestly striving to reach the same point; even the most radical are as singers in their views as the more moderate, and it will be by a general furion of the different parties that the o: ject can be accomplished. The position of France at the latest dates, with all the difficulties wh‘oh still surround the convention, is most extraordinary; and the people have, notwith. standing the bloody scenes which have been enacted jp the streets of Paris, exbibited a degree of modera- tion much to their credit, people bave had the power in their own hands, and were well acquainted with the extent of that power, it is wonderful that they have not committed more ex” cesres, and that so muck order and good feeling ex- It isthe best guaranty in the world that a re. public, upon the most modern prinoiples, will be ulti- mately established in that country. It will, howover, be the work of years, and within that time difficulties of the mort alarming nature will no doubt arise; but they cannot be otherwise than temporary, and, like the waves upon the ocean after a storm, every suc. | oveding one will be lees and less, until the whole sur. ist. whi face sinks into repose. ‘The commercial intelligence by this arrival does not amount to much. Cotton and consols have declined, whi'y corn has ‘lightly advanced, The accounts of the markets are not so favorable as those by the pre- vious steamer.
