The shipments of breadstuffs from Philadel- phia, for the week ending the 27th of October, were large, principally to England The aggregate was 12,251 barrels of flour, 1,040 barrels of corn meal, 19,812 bushels of wheat, and 26.862 bushels Indian corn, The total quantity of breadstuffs exported from this coun try, from the Ist of September up to the Jatest dates was 197,960 barrels of flour, 12.055 barrels of Indiao meal, 856,844 bushels of wheat, 1,000 bushels of oats and 2,418,566 beshels Indian corn. The two steamers now nearly due from Liverpool, Will give us six or seven days later intelligence from Great Britain relative to the grain markets. We do not Jeok for any important changeeither way: it is too early fot any great improvement in prices, and almost impossible, under the circumstances, for any decline, ‘We cannot expect anything new by tature arrivals Felative to the harvests, At the last accounts they had Deen mostly houred, and the crops were beyond fur. ther danger from unfavorable weather, The only question at issue is the quality and quantity of the yield, and the proportion of domystic supply to the probable demand. On the Ist of October. 1847. the average price of wheat in London was 53s, 6d , and on the 20th of September, 1848, 644 dd, This alight dif- ferance can be very easily overcome, and # reduction in the recerpts from continental ports, even for one day, would do it, At the departure of the last steamer from Liverpool, the supplies of breadetuffs from the United States were lntge. and the amount afloatilwas known to be large, snd these things doubtless had an effect on the market, avd kept prices down As the feason advances. and the domestic supply becomes re- duced, the market will be leas sensitive, and will better bear large imports., Any advance in prices on the other ide fwould give aigreat impetus to shipmeots from every port In this country. The movements in our grea’ exporting staple, this feason, compared with the corresponding period last, have been as annexed :—, Movemxnrs or Corron in Tae Uniten Suaras ade rosin. 642; apples, Receipts up to latest dates in 1848, from $ MO. do, iss7, do. bones 8 mich on shipboard, whet fea 4 ‘ The total inorease in the shipments to foreign ports % | when, where, how, aod of #)om they were obtained, and that tho this reas: amounts to 26,541 bales If the reoeipts continue for the remainder of the year at the rate thus far realized, the aggregate supply will exceed thet of last year several hundred tho id balws. We were disap- pointed in seeing so few of the “ west-enders those who, in the enjcyment of aplentitude of pub- lie patronage, imagine themseives superior to theix plebetan neighbors—a “ superiority” that may be stripped from its happy porsessors by the choice of a President of the United States, to be made on the 7th of November, like unto the unfeathering of the crow that sported in the peacock’s feathers. Government clerks were there—decent, high- nunded, honorable men; and, among the crowd, three ministers of the ‘Gospel. Feathers waved frem bonnets, and silk frocks rattled, and little | children came with their mamas, to “see the pret- ty things.” The furniture was plain, uf we except two large mirrors. One-tenth of our residents have as geod. The walls were adorned with a few pictures, prints, and the mantel pieces deco- rated with triflip omaments, such asa toy, cat and dog, which en ex-editor’s son said had their tails curled up. A certain ornament, of plaster, in the front parlor, might have been admired in any other place. It represented a litle boy in days when trowsers were not in fashion, or a model artist without drapery. Several timid misses shrunk from its approach. But this is a matter of taste. In the old countries, among ladies, there is less of that kind of refinement which is possessed by our own, and hence this distaste for the fine arts. The auctioneer commenced by selling the kitchen ware, which had been provided in profusion {gr the cook- ery. The pleasure of buying a pot ora saucepan, in which the Baron’s tood was gpoked, was enjoy- ed. There was in the display of effects one thing prominent, v thatthe Baron lived for comfort. in the plain furniture he showed more good sense than the heads of the Executive Departmeats, and more republican simplicity. He is about to leave the United States for his home, and he will take with him sincere wishes for health and h Appiness, having been much respected by all who knew him during his residence at the national capital. There has been much grumbling among the thirty workmen engaged in painting the Capitol. The Commissioner of Public Buildings, Dr. Doug- Juss, with a view to economy, proposed to pay them according to the number of hoes they were employed, which, these short days, deducting for | rainy weather, would have reduced their pay to | five or six dollars a week. They threatened to go | to the President, to lay their complaint before him, and to demand the wages given at the public | works, (a dollar and sixty-two and a half cents a | day, rain orshine.) The Commissioner avandoned his scheme. The painters continued their busi- | ness until Monday, when, in a body, they went to | the White House and stated their grievances to the President, who listened patiently, and then | promised that justice should be done, and said | that he wished them to be well paid. With light | hearts the mechanics returned to the Capitol.. The | President immediately sent for the Commissioner, and itis to be presumed they had a talc about the | painters. ‘This was payday ‘The painters fully | relied upon the President’s premise that justice | should be done; they vainly cherished the hope | that a dollar and sixty-two and a halt cents a day, | ram or shine, would be accorded ; but, lo! they | were pa but a dollar and a half a day, and the | time fost in rainy weather deducted | Congress appropriated twenty thousand dollars for painting the Capitol, but economy will not permit the go- verniment to amply compensate the men who | expose their lives to danger on a high swinging | scaffold. Itisashame, a disgrace to be so nig- gardly. But Mr. Polk, it is believed, 13 not a Cass man, and, being extremely selfish, he doesnot now care for the democracy, which, he must know, would be seriously hurt by his conduct in this mat- ter, in the coming elections, were it not known that he is secretly opposed to the nominee of the Baltimore Convention. He seems to have a spite against painters, having refused to appoint Mr. Seignstack as Commissioner of Public Buildings, because he wore a green jacket while he was em- ployed with his brush. He, however, made him Warden of the Penitentiary, and an excellent one he is, being kind and humane towards the unfor- unate convicts. Bau-rimons, Nov. 2, 1848. Politics of Oho, Pennsylvania and New York— Betters and Betting--The Mechanics’ Fuir—The- atricals, &c. A gentleman whd has just returned from a bust- ness tour through Ohio and Pennsylvania, and whe, by the way, is a strong democrat, says that Tay- lor’s chances for Ohio are deeidedly the best, un- lees the free soil humbug should die away before the election—that Van Burenisin thrives most in the democratic counties, and seems to carry all be- fore it. Pennsylvania, he considers safe for Casa, and offers to back his opinion te any reasonable amount. He says that Cass is very weak, how- ever, in Western Peunsylvania, and Taylor very strong, but thinks that the middle counties will go for him with overwhelming majorities. Asto New York, his opinion was, when he passed through the principal counties of the State several weeks since, that Van Buren would get the electoral vote; but if free seil should be on the wane, as reported, it i# certain for Taylor. With regard to betting, he expressed much sur- prise to find that the whigs were bet.ing al@ost two to one, here and in Washington, on the elec- tion of Taylor, and assures me that, in the West, bets of two to one on the election of Cass are offered and refused | The Mechanics’ Fair was opened last night to a | brillant audience, and no less than five engines | with a large amount’of machinery, set in motion, inthe machine room.
