above, have formed a huge mass, on to which the ‘American river is thrown. The immensely su- perior volume of water in the horse shoe, on the Canadian side, has ground out a channel s0 deep, that as the clifl 18 undermined, and falls in, it Baas bottom of some 200 or 300 feet down | for its reception; and thus a good swimmer might possibly descend the horse shoe, and come out alive. Not even the loss of a huadred lives | by the burning or explosion of a steamboat, could have created a more paintul sensation in this vil- lage than the toss of that solitary fisherman, under | the thniling circumstances witnessed by some | Sid poems onthe shore. And the horror of that tearful descent must, indeed, have been appalling to every beholder. Just at the point where the boat upset, the main current diverges from the shore to the middle of the stream. Here was the last chance. He was, perhaps, thrown out of the boat too suddenly to seize it; put had he known the tact, there was a bare hope left in swimming to the main land, scarce twenty yards off In- deed, we can hardly agree to give the victim up to the edge of the clifl, where it looks as if a strong man might wade all the way across, so even and shallow does the water appear to be spread over it. If any one of the readers of this letter should ever be‘drawn into the despe- rate situation of the poor fisherman whose fate we have described, we hope that he will profit from our suggestions, taken from a careful observation of the river, and he may rely upon living to tell the story of his escape. 5 We crossed over the suspension bridge to-day, 800 feet over, at the rapids, a mile below the falls, and hanging 250 feet above the surface of the white waves, from which to the bottom, it 1s 250 feet more. The bridge is a light, airy, and beautiful piece of workmanship. As seen trom the ferry at the falls, it looks like a huge spider web, stretched from cliff to cliff, and the passengers, male and female, like prodigious black spiders, Jeading gay butterflies through its meshes. It is so firmly braced with wires that there is scarcely any vibration in walking over it, a dozen passen- gereatatime. We believe the quarrel is nearly adjusted as to the right among the litigants to the passage money, for passengers are permitted to creep under the barricade, and cross over. At least, the absurd practice of the dog in the manger has been abandoned for the more sensible one of taking tolls on each side where the passengers come in. The hills, the woods, the sky, the falls, the deep and rushing river, are enhanced in their attractions by the soft and warm sunshine, and the mellow glowing atmosphere of indian summer. °Tis Indian summer now! ‘A warm luxurious haze, Softens the prospect, far away ‘The swift white rapids seem to play pithe delicious haze Niagara’s surging waters seem, ‘The flashing picture of a dream. And so we might go on ringing the changes, through an epic poem. ‘ Burra.o, Oct. 13.—In the afternoon train we came up to town, and with our thanks to the polite clerk of the American hotel for his charge of our travelling baggage inthe interval, we set out forth- with to report in person, at head-quarters, the re- sults of our agreeable and flattering mission through Pennsylvania, a corner of Maryland, and through the State of Ohio. Tue Doctor. Affairs in Texas. Itis said that the yellow fever prevails extensively at Galveston, as well as at Houston. The disease 1s, however, of a very mild type. The Chihuahua Surveying Expedition, says the Austin Democrat, left San Antonio, under Colonel Hays, on the bth inst. A German was drowned in attempting to ford the Colorado during alate freshet in that river Col. P. H. Bell, of the Texas frontier regiment, has returned to Austin from Torrey’s trading house. He informs the editor of the Democrat that Major Neigh- bors. Indian agent, and himself, had a “talk” with José Marie, the Caddo chief, relative to the killing of one of his tribe some months ago, which resulted in the complete pacification of the Indians The rumors published of their having stolen horses from the Tanger’, turns out to be incorrect. Judge Stamps, of Harris county, Texas, has taken contract to furnish the Penitentiary at Huntsville with 250,000 brick. The Governor of Texas has refused to call an extra session ofthe Legislature. Colonel Kinney and Mr. Blood, says the Corpus Christi Star, visited this place, and they represent the inhabitants there as prospe and happy. They are mostly from the Emerald Isle, or the descendants of those who had left that country for a more liberal one. Before the Texan war there was quite a settle- ment of them in and about San Patricio, but they were forced to leave it, and as far back as 1842there Was not a human being living there, settle down with the assured conviction of ample pro- tection, and in that assurance may they prosper. If we may jdge from the numerous indications we perceive in the Stor, Corpus Christi is undoubtedly jeetined to be an important place. The Star itself is avery valuable and interesting sheet, and, as usual with any paper with which our friend Peoples is con- ie contains a large amount of interesting intel- igence. The residue of Cans. Sutton’s company left for Cal vier’s rancho, on the San Antonio, on the 7th ul! where they will be mustered out of service by Blake, 24 Dragoons. The dredging machine which has been purchased by Col, Kmney, is expected at Corpus Christi in a few days. ‘The deepening efthe channel will then be com- menced, and when concluded, vessels of a good draught will be able to reach the landing. The Ster is informed by a gentleman but a short time from Matamoras, that many Mexican families are crossing to this side of the Rio Grande, and building tempocary jacaels on theriver. At San Antonio, too familes are arriving from the Upper Rio Gran. vith the view of settling. We alluded, says the Star, i. our Jat, to the fact that some very wealt Mexicans from ‘Tamaulipas had visited Corpus C! i, and were s0 . well pleased with it and its vicinity, that they hurried | Andrew Foster, Howes, back with the view of bringing over their families. Un- Jess, then, the affairs of Mexico soon settle down into a quiet state, giving some promise of permanency,we may expect in Western Texas generally, and in Corpus Christi i particularly, many of those who, having lived under ican Liana ape as their own lend, will not hesitate to remove, bag and baggage, 60 as toenjoy it again. vather than undergo the turmoils and vexe- tion which characterized ir land before the war. The insecurity of property, and the continued contri- butions that have been levied by the supreme govern- ment will induce many to seek a home this side of the Rio Grande, where they know there is not only stabil- ity of government, but the amplest protection to life and property. Let them come on. We will insure them protection in life and property, and a hearty welcome. The Victoria wf ate is of opinion that the Texas cotton crop exceeds an average crop 20 Peed cent, though the worm has done comsiderable damage in many parts of the State. ‘We learn from the Victoria (Texas) Advocate, that the city council of that place has made a contract with the Mesers. Ward for clearing out and navigating ‘the Guadalupe river. They are to remove all obstrac- tions in the river and bay, and make twenty-five trips | with a steamboat from Matagorda Bay to Victoria, be- fore June, 1850—for which services they are to be paid out of the tolls of the river. the sum of forty thousand dollars, with interest. In addition to the forty thourand dollars which are te be paid out of the tolls the citizens are to make yp the sum of five thourand dollars as a bonus for the contractors, to be paid so Foon aa the contract is completed. In our summary of the Texas news yesterday, we copied a yh from the Houston Star, stating thar the health of that place was greatly improved — ‘We regret to find a contradiction of this in the Pres- byterian of the 30th ult. a week later. That paper says: ‘We sorry we cannot this week announce eny im- provement in the health of this place We do not ex- pect the diseare will be eradicated until frost comes Wo our relief, Many of our most valuable citizens are falling victims to this direfal scourge, fellow fever.— ‘We advire our friends in the country to keep iv ‘until a good frost — New Orleans paper.
