At ‘the first board, Farmers’ Loan declined 34 per cent., Norwich and Worcester %, Erie Railroad, new full, 1. Harlem advanced }{. The sales were small at the ‘board, and there was no disposition exhibited to do anything until after the arrival of the steamer. At the second board, Erie Railroad fell off 1 per cent. ‘There were large sales of Reading on time, buyers’ op- tion, at an advance of 3 per cent. from the opening. In consequence of the absence of tho steamer, the ‘emand for exchange for remittance by the packet Jeaving Boston to-morrow, has not been very active. ‘Quotations for sterling bills have slightly given way, and the rates for the best in the market rule at 84 a9 percent premium. On Paris we quote 5f 2234 a 5f 20 Amsterdam 40 a 40 ; Hamburgh 854, a 354 ; Bremen ‘78% a 79. The returns of eight city banks, made on the 30th of September, exhibit specie on hand amounting to $1,104,566, against $1,374 640 on the 24th of June last, @howing a decrease of $270,074, in alittle more than ‘three months. The annexed statement exhibits the amount of tolls ‘xeesived at Lafayette and Fort Wayne, on the Wabash ‘and Erie Canal, Indiana, in the month of September, Gn each of the past three years: Wanast anv Erte Canat—Touis Couuecren. a 187 1848 ‘Dafayette ... 6,321 95 7.765 98 13,506 99 Fore Wayne 2022180 OF 6397 07 8202 15 Totals.......... $9,923 95 $14,163 05 $21,749 15 This result is more extraordinary than appears upon ‘Ste face. Last year, the movements in produce in the ‘western States were unusually active, and an im ‘mense quantity of breadstuffs found its way to mar ket. The active foreign demand, and high prices, gav® ‘@ great impetus to agricultural products, and all oar ‘works of internal improvement were actively employed ‘up to the close of navigation. This year, the demand abroad has not been so great, prices at home have not xuled so high, and the amount pressing forward has een small compared with the previous year. Not- withstanding this the revenue from tolls on the pub- Bic works of the Western States, has been large. The “Wabash and Erie Canal, particularly, has been unu- fually productive. The receipts thus far have nearly doubled those for the same period last year. It isim- ‘possible to tell what will be the ultimate productive- mess of this and all other works of internal improve ment in the Western country. Growing up as they | do with the country with which they are surrounded | they must, before the lapse of many years, pay enor- mous revenues on their cost; and although they have ‘thus far, been like a mill stone about the necks of the people of the States in which they are located, and Shave been the cause of the delinquency in their fnan- eial affairs, the time is not far distant when they will ‘become sufficiently productive to relieve the States | rom all indebtedness, and the people from all taxa- “tion for State purposes. The condition of the leading departments of the ‘Marine and Fire Insurance Bank of Georgia, on the Bd of April and 2d of October, 1848, was as annexed: Marine ano Fine Insurance Bawx, Gronata. These changes are at all times desirable, and tend, very materially, to strengten the institution submitting to them. There ds very little danger of a banking institution reducing ts circulation to a point below what the community may at any time conform to, provided itis produced gradually. A system of credits, independent of that ‘based upon the promises to pay of banking institu- tions, exists inour large commercial cities, and a @imilar system would soon take the place of that now 4n operation, in the interior. The paper issues of all | country banks sare much more numerous, in propor- tion to their capitals and amount of specieon hand, than those of the principal cities, and if about fifty ‘per cent of the circulation of allthe country banks Gn the Union, could be extinguished. without reducing the amount of specie in their vaults, it would be much more for the interests of all classes and much better for the country at lerge. ‘The value of real and personal estate, in each ward of the cityand county of New York, in each of the ‘past two years, according to the annual reports of the comptroller, was as annexed :— ‘Crrv arp County or New Yorx.—Varve or Reat anv 80N AL Estat e—1347 ann 1848, —1548.-— —— 14... eg Decrease. | Sabir 180, ee | 7... 10.789,900 38222 1nbsre30. 14 ‘Total 187,315,396, .. .$193,027,076, .. .. + $6,115,740, ..,. This result, in the face of the existing depreciation in the value of real estate, is highly satisfactory, and is the best evi- @ence in the wo rid of our prosperity and rapid growth "The extension of our limits towards the northern ‘poundary of the island will soon make great changes Jn the location of business and of dwelling houses Business is crowding dwelling houses into the upper warde, and in a few years the first five or six wards 4n'the city will be almost entirely ocoupied with stores nd warehouses. The peculiar geographical shape of , this island makes it necessary for the two extremes to Be cooupied by warehouses and dwelling houses, and At will be compulsory, soon, to make our great thorough- fares more numerous, and better adapted to the im- | menee population which will flow to and fro through them, This city is'nt preseat.a mere village, compared | ‘with what it is destined to be; it will double every | twonty years, and, ere long, reach the borders of Har- | Jem river, We should now, in all public improve- ments made, prepare for the position this city will Ultimately reach, and aid its progress in every way. A portion of our population fs drawn off by the neigh- | Pouring cities and villages; but, even with there out- | ets, the increase ia most rapid. The inorease in the | ‘value of personal property is more distributed than that of real estate, The 15th ward shows the most rapid accumulation, while the Ist ward will, doubtless, | for many years, show an excess, in the aggregate, on any other in the olty. The 15th ward is covered prin. cipally with dwelling houses, comprising the most mag- mificent in the city; and the personal estate of the ‘ward consists princi pally of household furniture, &e., | the appurtenances of fashionable society, The perso, | | Asmalllot of 600 a 700 bushels were sold at | this State, 950 00 | mH | | on han | be nal estate of the Ist ward consists of merchandise, produce, &c.,im which @ large part of the trade and commerce of the city is carried on. The Conflicting Election Reports—Arrest of'a No- tortous Rogue—Fire—New Steamshiz. The election reports are so conflicting and con_ | tradictory with regard to Ohio and Pennsylvania, that the results may be considered as still in a fog: The democrats were thrown into extacies thig morning by a despatch from Harrisburg, giving Longstreth a majority of 115 for Governor. The impression still 1s, that his whig opponent is the | next as well as the present Governor ; but Lon; streth’s friends have actually sent him a despste! announcing his election, so confident are they of having at last found out rhe truth. The latest despatches from Ohio elect Ford ; but it 1s probable that they will be contradicted before night, so as to elect Weller, his democratic oppo- nent. Robert 'P. Stiles, a Chevalier d’Industrie, who has been levying contributions upon all classes of our citizens, for more than a year past, burning them in the most ingenious manner, has been, at last, nabbed ; and there is now a prospect of his being brought to justice, if the influential frends of his family do not contrive to hoodwink justice, while he eseapes. His father was one of our most respectable citizens, and his mother, (a lady not less than 70 years of age.) is enduring the most poignant distress, at the disgrace attending the developements. | The curled hair manufactory'of Henry Girker, at Fifth and Camac streets, was destroyed bv fire, this morning, causing a loss of about $4,000, one half of which was insured. Two Days of Indian Summer at Niagara. Niagara! world of rejoicing waters, all glorious art thou. Unsullied in thy purity, thine ocean waves roll on, bright as the streams which mir- rored Eden’s bowers. Beautiful thy billowsin their flashing green; and thy wild breakers in their snowy plumes; grand thy majestic form in wreathing clouds arrayed; sweet the green island looking over the abyss; solemn and awful in thy fearful bound, yet strong as death, whence comest thou? Rivers from civilization’s marts, and tribu- taries from the northern wilderness, where still he dusky children of the woods bask in the autumn sun, the mingled waters of a cham of seas, with all the fountains springing up from their unfathomable wells, unite to swell the volume of thy waves, and blend their shouts in thine. Thy voice sonorous in the distance sounds like the wild roar of a fierce tempest in a mountain gorge; and near thy misty crater, it doth shake thine ada- | mantine throne; and, from its deep rebound, it thrills the arch of heaven. Theclondy columa | from thy sounding urn rises by night and day; the covenant rainbow o’er thy radiant brow shines ever in the sun; and when the moon’s un- clouded radiance softens all the ecene, still gleams | the bow of promise there, lifting our thoughts from | earth to heaven, and waking memories full of sweet harmonies, as vesper hymns from some white convent in the distant hills! It was some years ago, that we left some such impressions as these in the common-place book of ‘able-rock Cottage, and, like the pilgrim’s spiritual visitations at some miraculous shrine, they come at chr return. * In a matter-of-fact point of view, Niagara isa river ef the largest claes, and the falls are quite a curiosity ; indeed, the whole region about them, especially below them,is unique, and full of points of | interest, history, and wild romanee. The rapids above the falls, on the American side, have been | tumed to goodaccount. Around the nucleus of the | Cataract House, alittle village of hotels, curiosity- shops, tailor-shops, shoe-shops, groceries, butch- er-shops, saw-mills, and factories, has sprung up. | There are three saw-mills, one.paper-mill, (on an island,) one pail factory, one machine shop, one | flouring-mill, one shoe-peg and last factory, all | worked by the water-power of the rapids; | and they do say, that. they never fall | short of water. 2 The fact is, if you could only find places to build them uader the cliffs, from the falis to Lewiston, some eight or ten_miles, there is water power enough to drive ten thousand fac- tories, each of ten thousand horse power, leaving | then astream of 800 fees wide, and 200 feet deep, | surging through the long chaam (which the river | has cat through a solid wall of limestone, 250 feet, down to the surface) at the maximum of twenty miles an hour. The tremendous volume of water | 18 the greatest feature of the spectacle; and yet be- low Montreal the stream of the St. Lawrence has twviee the volume of Niagara; and atthe mouth of | the Saguenay the voiume of fresh water which the reat river of Canada rolls towards the sea, is per- aps, in October, equal to the aggregate of all the | mvers of the Atlaatie coast from the Hudson to the Gulf, including the father of rivers himself. The whele Topiony dhaltied by the St. Lawrence, is | one of great Jakes, numberless fountains, and deep and repid rivers, never exhausted by the sun. We doubt whether the stream ot the St. Law- re ce is snrpassed by the Amazon of South Ame- nie , or the Lena of Northern Asia. Ocrorgr 18.—One of the workmen in the pail tactory, (to whona we extend our thanks,).accom- p)nied us, last naght, dowa the Americau rapids to show us %he beat from which, a few days ago, a man was drifted over the precipice, a descent of a hundred and sixty-four feet, into the pile of rocks below. The unfortunate fisherman certainly knew nothing of the river. Above the tsland the river looks to be three miles wide, end at the head of | the island he had a space of several hundred yards so shallow that he might have waded it. Yet, in- s ead of making for the island he pulled for the American shore, where the whole pressure of that channel is diverted. After getting into the chan- | wel he had still a huadred chances of escape in a | single pull of the oar, which would habedatown him out arnong the shallows or little islands to the left hand. But he persisted in steering tor the maim levd, and thus maintained the boat in the enly current which could carry his vessel. it his object had been to float his bark over the pres ipice, there was no other way in which ve could have done it on the American side than the course which he pursued. Had he, on entering the American gide of the island, sat qnietly in his boat, there were ten chances to one thetit would have been thrown out among the shallows, or against some one of the small islands | tothe left. His presence of mind is deseribed as most remarkable; but never was the self-posses- sion of a man so fatally misdirected. The boat (one of three or four tons) lies within a stone’s | cast of the American shore, and about one hun- | dred yards above the chasm. It 18 turned bottom upwards over a rock. The man floated out trom imming with the oar { mn his hand; and it was, perhaps, in a fied effort | to stand upon his feet, that he was seen to go | over, a8 in a sitting posture, feet foremost. Search has been made, but nothing more. has been seen ot him. Perhaps, his body, erushed inte jelly, | hes wedged among the rocks, which, fulling from Cataract House, Niagara Farts, |
