The increase for that pe- riod has been eo trifling that it is hardly worth noting. A very decided improvement has been realised in some of the departments, particularly ix those affecting the public interests, viz., the circulation and amount of specie on hand for the protection of the circulation. With on increase in the amount of bullion in reserve, there has been a reduction in the circulation, so that the proportion of specie on hand to paper promises in the hands of the public, had become reduced from one to two and aquarter to about one and one and three-quarters. These institutions shew, by the recent report, that the contraction in the circulation of the Western banks kas been almost universal, Western banks, generally, have a wide margin for an expansion ; and as goon as the improvement in come mercial affairs wi.l justify it, we have not the slightest | doubt they will fill it up. These concerns are not | very apt to let any favorable opportunity pass to In- | crease their profits, without that regard for the interests of the commercial classes which their intimate con- nection would incline one to think the best policy.
