M. ‘The stock market opened this morning at a little ad- varoe on Saturday’s prices. There were sales to some extent at both boards, and the market closed with an upward tendency. At the first board Ohio 6’s went up % per cent; Farmers’ Loan, %; Norwich and Worcester, 4%; Long Ieland, ¢; Harlem, 3. United States 6’s, 1867, Reading Bonds, and Reading Railroad, closed at prices current on Saturday. At the second board, Harlem advanced 1 per cent; Long Jeland, 4; Norwich and Worcester, }; Farmers’ Loan 34. on prices ruling in the morning. There wore large eales of Harlem at the improvement. The steamship Hibernia, at Boston, from Liverpool, brought five days later intelligence from England. There has been a complete revolution in the principal markets. Breadstuffs were down and cotton up. The scales are reversed, and our entictpations have been realized. A few days bad weather, or a few days good weather, have 8 wonderful influence upen prices of breadstuffs in Great Britain, and it would not surprise us to see things re- vorsed by the next arrival. It is getting so late in the Beason now, that the crops are pretty well advanced, and in a short time will be out of all danger. Prices then will become settled and established for the season. It is our impression that they will rule low. The slight ad- vance in cotton was the result of the slight decline in breadstaffs, and the lower the latter go down, the higher tho former will go up. They regulate each other, and havo rarely been known to rise together. A semiannual dividend of two dollars and fifty cents per share will be paid to the stockholders of the Syra- euse and Utica Railroad Company, on the 16th day of August inst. Stock registered at New York will be paid at the American Exchange Bank. Stockholders residing 4a Albany and the vicinity of that city, will be paid at the State Bank in Albany, those in Oneida county, at the Oneids Bank—and all others at the Onondaga Coun- ty Bunk. The increase in wheat and corn has been nearly one hundred per cent. ‘When the Wabash and Erle Canal is completed from Evansville, on the Ohio river, to Toledo on Lake Erie, it will pase through ® sountry which will furnish an amount of produce for transportation to market, equal to the full capacity of that work, and the revenue from it will be large enough to pay in full the interest on that eninge of the public debt depending upon the income the publle works for Hquidation, The productive | entirely unsettled, by foreign news, The reosipte during | ness of this canal is almost beyond calculation; we have no doubt it will exceed the estimates of those inter- ested as much as those relative to the Erie Canal of this 8:ate have done. With an outlet to the north and to the south, running through the interior of the whole line of the State, it gives facilities to nearly every county to get their products to market, and opens to all a cheap com- munication with thereaboard, to the south in the win- tar, and to the north in the summer. It will find busi- ness enough along the line to give full employment to all the facilities, and opens a communication with the waters of the Ohio river and those of Lake Erie, that will command a large carrying trade. Outlets from the inte- rior of the Western States are rapidly increasing, and the inlets at the eastern end of our great lakes must also in- crease, or we shall not be able to transport to the sea- board the produce of these States as fast as the commerce of these lakes bring it along. Buffalo is already crowded. Oswego is rapidly increasing. Dunkirk, the western termination of the Erie Railroad, will soon be ac- tively engaged in the lake trade, Ogdensburgh, the western termination of the Boston, Lake Champlain and Ogdensburgh Railroad, will soon bea competitor for that trade. Buffalo and Dunkirk have a very great advan- tage over the ports of Lake Ontario, as the navigation of that lake is avoided. and the distance is greatly rodu- ced. All will soon bave business enough, and in time, more than they can dispose of. The West is yet in its infancy. When its immense breadth of territory is culti- vated to the extent it will ultimately be, we shall want two or three Erie Canals and half a dozen Erie Railroads to carry off the produce as fast as it comes along. No despatches have been received from the Head Quarters of the Army in Mexico by the late arrival. A letter has been received from a person well versed tn Mexican politics, and intimately acquainted with the most prominent members of the existing administration, He states positively that, Santa Anna is prepared to negotiate. The only circumstance tending to weaken the credit of this statement, is, that his letter is dated on the 13th ult., whereas advices as late as the 17th ult. have been received, treating the probable negotiation as mere rumor. The writer, however, possesses better means of ascertaining the views and purposes of Santa Anna than the public generally. ‘There is little probability that General Scott and Mr. ‘Trist are acting in concert, as the wording of the recent intelligence would lead one to suppose. Indeed, there exists scarcely possibility of such a desirable consum- mation, after what has passed. It is greatly to be re- gretted that, at such an important crisis,an unbappy misunderstanding should preclude that unison between the commanding General and the diplomatic agent of the government, so important to the success of Mr. ‘Trist’s mission. Congress, at its next session, will call for the correspondence, and then the cause of the dispute will be made public. The Union, in ite customarily feliciteus manner, has so bungled this subject, in reply to some strictures of the opposi- tion press, as to present the administration as having made the discreditable attempt to convict Gen. Scott of having delayed the chances of peace by the unworthy trick of ante-dating their own letters. Of course it was not of malice aforethought, but one of the editor’s happy blunders, The adminisiration is nevertheless the scape- sont, and very deservedly, as however creditable it may be to the feelings of the President and his Cabinet to re. tain the Union a» the quasi-exponent of thei: poliey after the many glaring preofs it bas lately given of total incapacity, the wisdom of such course, at least, is ex- tremely questionable It is evidence of no less ques tionable taste to endeavor toget rid of the unpleasant fact of such incapacity, by calling nvmes like an angry boy. The editor of the Union should be ashamed of such a mode of defence at his time of life. While on this subjvct, it may be proper to remark, that the tone of the Union on our relations with Brazil, does not reflect the views of the administration on that question, That journal “trusta’’ that no serious diffeul- ty may arise out of the misunderstanding between the two governments. The United States are in a position to say that no difficulty shall arise, and that fit bas al- ready been recorded in the action of thé State Depart- ment in the matter. Our government scorns to take ad- vantage of the weakness of Brazil, and therefore looks with cold disdain on the pragmatic petulance she ex- hibits, She has neither the will nor the power todo aught but bluster. Querulous peevishness is the privi- lege of the weak, and thus she is privileged. But the balance of peace and war is not in her hands; therefore there {sno danger that she will be suffered to break the peace. ‘The Emperor is a young man of twenty-one years of ‘age, and cannot be expected to exhibit any extraordi- nary discretion in his intercourse with foreign nations. For what has happened, his late ministers are most to blame, and their successors may abandon the silly policy pursued by them. The administration of affairs is al- most entirely in the hands of the ministers for the time being. The house of Braganza never exhibited much administrative talent since the first king of the name, John IV., ascended the throne of Portugal in 1640, down to the present year, when the people «f that coun- try felt themselves compelled to take arms against the intolerable oppressions of their fat queen. It is not very apparent that the race has been improved by trans- planting. The Brasilians are worthy of the house that rules them. The whites comprise nearly one-fourth of the population, the Indians one-tenth, the remainder consisting of negrees and mulattoes. A triumph over such a people could ne be the ambition of the United States, and under the ciroumstances, our government will not suffer itself to be provoked into a quarrel. GALVIENSIS. Bautimone, Aug 2, 1847. Rumors from the Seat of War—Speculators at Work— The Cowhiding Case— More Rich Scenes at Hand— Miss Wemyss—The Marke’s, §c. No confidence is placed in the peace rumors from the seat of war. Indeed, the only news we get arerumorsand from their great variety and complexion, it is evident that they have their origin in speculation, manufactured for use mainly in the New York market. ‘The recent cowhiding of Mr. Weishampel, the editor of the Bee, found its way before the City Court on Sat- urday, and Mr. Fogg was fined $5, and compelled to give ; | Hos aca to keep the peace. The offensive pes was brought in evidence, which stated that an case of seduction had come i: their knowledge, but it being at present in @ “fogg,”’ the particulars could not ‘until next week. I pears that Mr. Thurston, Mr. Fogg’s partner, before the cowhiding, called on Wels- hample and offered him moneyto suppress the facte, which he refused to accept. The next nuaber of the Bee is to be issued on Saturday next, and as the editors have had the girl and her mother before them, 8 stacy of more of more than ordinary interest ma; ney, be antici robably by more cowhiding. Thus Mr. F. iene ‘cow- Riaed tne alfair into public notice, and will doubtless attempt to cowhide it out with like effect. Miss C. Wemyss makes her first aj map peatan ce this ev ing at the Front Street Theatre, a Julia, in the “ Hun back,” sustained by Mr. Jamieson, and a vi stock company. There is considerable anxiety here to see her, especially by the old friends of her uncle, and a fine reception awaits ber. Professor Grant is exhibiting the effects of his exhil- lerating gas to very good houses.
