b SS minutes he was sretobedl on the grass with a violent gash across the lower part of his abdomen, from’ which the life blood ap- peared to be flowing, and while thus. lyir several heavy cuts from a cowhide were dealt on his head and face by one of the party.— He is now recovering, and it has since been as- certained that he is wholly guiltless of the charge brought against him. He says he forgives the one that stabbed him, acting as he did under the belief that he was guilty of so heinous offence, = btn he can never forgive the base act of str ke him with a cowhide, when he was supposed dying. The parties have all been bound ome for tral i in the sum of $4,000 each I learn that Mr. Wheeler, the well known con- gressional stenographic reporter, is now confined in the Baltimore jail, anda an arrest for@ebt. It seems that he is in debt to a citizen of New York, who laid in wait for him he returned from Wash ngton, so as to avail himselfofour infamous laws for imprisonment for debt. He has now been confined nearly two weeks, and will proba- bly remain here five months, which is the time required for the amount of debt that he has been arrested on, betore he can swear out, or take the benefit. J. Simons Davis, the manager of the Harmo- neons, is also an occupant of the same extensive building, on the charge of being unable to pay his debts. He will also stay his time out and take the benefit, Puicapecrna, Aug. 25, 1846. The Weather—Political Conventions and Nomina- tions—Dedication of the Odd Fellows Hall, §c. So ‘much father, it is apprehented, will greatly inj cotton throughout the prmen eeeet te State. It was already much damaged by the carly rains in this vi- cinity: ‘The weather, which a short time since threatened so much injury to'the cotton, by a too rapid growth of the weed, has assumed another form, and we anticipate @ full average yield. Occasional showers that may yet be needed for late corn will not, we think, be in the least detrimental to cotton.—Leurensville Herald The Savannah Georgian states, in relation to the cotton erop—"' As regards the growing crop, it is too early to form any opinion; we may remark, however, that the advices from all quarters continue to be unfavorable, ant that the caterpillar has made its appearance in several sections.
