E ‘e shall bring up a batch of interesting odds and ends to-morrow. Naval Court of Enquiry. Navy DeraxrMenr, 2 Wasnixeron, October 9, 1845. 5 ‘The Court met pursuant to adjournment. Present, all the members, the Judge Advocate, and Lieutenant Mc- Laughlip W. H. Watt was called and sworn. By the Juoer Apvocats.—I am a merchant, and reside at Key West, Florida; I am at present a member of the Senate of Flo: ida. i By Lieut McLavontix.—Lieutenaat McLaughlin did not conciliate with me for the purpose of charging extra- vagant prices. 1 offered to purchase the houses on In- dian Key a second time, but did not offer an advance upon my first offer. 1 do not consider the houses them- selves worth the amount I offered for them and the land; my offer was to purchase two of the buildings, including lands, in fee simple, for the sum of $5,000; the two build. ings, I should suppose, would cost about $5,000 to erect them. [A tabie was then shown the witness, of the prices paid for lumber, by Lieut MeLaugh in, and, upon asked concerning the rates charged for that article, | answered, | consider the lumber low at the price named in the table; | deal a great deal in lumber, and could not afford to deliver them at that price.) As a general rule, the wages paid for house-carpenters was $3a day. The rices named in the table are lower than they can be ob- fained at Key West. ‘The amount of goods sold by me to L out. MoLaughim did not, | think, exceed $4,000; my pills, however, are on file, and will show the precise amount; I cannot say positively as to the amount; my general sales for the ‘year amounted to about $50,000; the prices charged to Lieut. McLaughlin were the same I charged to other persons; | have had dealings with other departments of the government, and | refer you, for comparison, to those on file in the Treasury De- rtment. ‘The goods bought of me, and sold to the dif- jerent vessels, were furnished upon a requisition signed by a commander ofa vessel, and receipted for by the of- ficer of the deck, and the bills were paid by Lieut. Mc- Laughlin upon his receipt; a very small portion of the goods were sold to Commander McLaughlin, who w: | command of the schooner Flirt, and most of them sold to the other vessels. Lieut. McL. was very rigid in the settlement of his accounts, more so than any other rson with whom [ had had dealings. If Lt. McLaugh- jin’s dealings with me are to be regarded as an index to | his dealings with others, I should say, most positiv=ly, that there was no collusion whatever between him and any other person. the coast of Florida was $17. | By the Covar.—Upon New York prices, the profit | would be, on goods purchased there, from 25 to 100 per | eent. This large pros ig occasioned by the expense of living, and the risk of life, and the natural deterioration of goods, caused by the climate; I did not examine all the buildinge erected by Lieutenant McLaughlin on In- | dian Key; I did not examine the two buildings | offered | to buy; I'was in one of them; as! did not examine the | buildings, 1am unable to state what ought to be their | cost; previous to making en offer to purchase the two buildings, | hada description of them from Lieutenant McLaughlid; at the time I spoke to him about purchas ing them, he described them; | did not notice any waste by the officers of the vessels; in Florida Reef the officers ‘tentive to their duty, and were very vigilant; I no waste of the government property. y the Jupce Apvocare.—As near as I can recollect now, the building occupied for the hospital was a rough building, one story high, with a loft; the size of the building was about 40 or 50 feet wide, by 70 or 80 feet in length; the other building was about 28 feet square, | } ith a portico all round, about § feet wide, and finished inside; that building was a finished building, with panel doors; | think that building was painted; the hospital, | think, was whitewashed; 1 expected to get about an acre of land with the two buildings [ cflered to pur- chase; | intended to use the building occupied for a hos- pital as fore; the other building was to be used or oc- cupied as a dwelling by the person who kept the store; the land I should consider worth about $3,000 for my purpose: her than not get them at that time, if the ti- tle could have been perfected, I would have given per- haps $10,000 for them. EO. Dsvron, fourth snliiat, recalled.—[Several i ger in writing having been submitted to him to get @ required information in his office} The first is not | susceptible of answer. There was no separate appropri- ion for the year ending on the 30th June, 1342; the ap: propriations were made for the fiscal year, and the fiscal x, at that time, ; the appropriation ending on tne 3ist December, 1942, for medicines and surgical instruments, hospital stores, and other expenses on account of the sick, in ad- dition to the expended balance, if any, of former appro- priations, was $30,000; as I have already stated that there was no separate appropriation for the year ending 30th June, 1942, and as this question related to such sup- ion, it is not susceptible of an answer. Two bills were handed the 4th Audi- tor, and he was asked to say which was the one paid to Mr. © replied, I think the one word “potatoes” is “barrels.” I think the question can bi answered with more certainty by Mr. Etheridge; my i pression upon the subject is, that 1 derived my informa- tion from him;! cannot say with certainty that { did; | cannot speak withany degree of positiveness; Mr. Day- ton was asked ifene was a duplicate of the other, and he ‘answered that he thought he was. He replied, that he had to land Mr Shocco Jones, of Shocco, sel at that time. He told me, at that time, that he had mething very vitally important to communicate to me, nud asked me to go on board, and I went alongside. Oxi my going on board, he got tho vessel under way. Ilo then seated himself with me along the trunse of his sel, whore he disclosed to me the following facts. He id he regretted very deeply his course of the year pre- vious, which had severed our friendship; he felt that there would be a byeside, which was prompted by the best feelings. He parted with me. [Lowell Purdy, with whom he was living for four or five months at N. York, said that he considered him a scoundrel, and that hehad treated him badly. He (Mr. McL.) stated to me that he had recovered $20,000 from the estate of the late Lu! Tiernan, Esq., of Baltimore, the most of which he was about to settle upon ter. He added that he could w be able to reli in my pecuniary difficulties, whioh enquired into.
