J the First Ward. Her life is despaired of.— | Her bus! is employed on board some vessel, and was | absent at the time of the occurrence. Her offs a | child about 4 months old, was suitably provided for. | Another Case—A man ramed Wm. Foley, residing in | range street, also attempted to commit suicide last night. His groans attracted ihe attention of persons in | the house, who entered his rooms in time to frustrate his | inga Wife.—A man named James K. Smith, was | this morning for attempting to take the life of | his wife by hanging her with a rope, which round her neck for that purpose. The parties reside at No.7 | Ridge street. Freudulent Transactions.—Officer Relyea, of the Inde- pendent Police, No. 48 Centre street, returned to the city this morning from Syracuse, having in custody a man named Aaron Fleishacker, charged with having defraud- ed Israel D. Walter to the amount of about $500, by false pretences. ¥ Admitted to Bail—Thomas Barker impleaded with Thomas Garrouse, in forging checks in the name of Grosbeck & Co., of Wall street, to the amount of about $7,000, was admitted to bail before the Recorder, on Sat- arday last, inthe sum of $3,000. Sunday, September 21—6 P. M. After along period of depression, the stock market has again become buoyant, and operations extensive | Quotations for nearly all the stocks used in this market for investment or for speculation, have, within the past two orthree days, advanced several per cent, and the prospect at present is that a farther advance will be re- alized. There is a large margin for an advance in nearly every stock in the list. Wor the past six or eight months | prices have ranged vory low, and lately the decline | has been so great that quotations have touched a lower point than has been experienced within the past year. | Our foreign relations have recently been ina state that | hasiproduced the mos:{unfavorable effects upon stocks ge | norally, and the!:mprovement shown in the quotations of | the past few days has been in a great measure caused by | the complexiou of late advices from the South in relation toMexican and Texian affairs. In connection with the im. provement in our foreign relations, there has been a very decided improvement in the money market. Capital is very abundant and the rate of interest from one to two per cent below the legal standard; business of all kinds is unusually active end in a highly prosperous condi, tion; the recent accounts from England in relation to our great staple, cotton, and the harvests, are of the most favorable and encouraging nature, and have given an im petus to trade in the two great stoples, corn and cotton, | that must improve prices very much. All these things | ‘operate as favorably upon the stock market as upon any | other, and any activity created in trade generally, cre- | ates a corresponding activity in stocks. In addition to | these things there is room for an advance in most of the | fancy stocks, particularly Railroad stocks. Quotations | for such stocks as Long Island, Norwich and Worcester, | | | i | Stonington, Erie and Reading Railroads have for some time past ranged many per cent below the actual value of the stocks as permanent investments, and the improve- ment lately realized is only a nearer approach to their realworth. These stocks have been depressed by the restrictions in the money market, by competition, and in | some instances by mismanagement. These causes have | been removed and there is at present no reason why these stocks should not reach prices as high as at any | previous time. | ‘We annex a comparative table giving the quotations of some of the stocks usedin this market for speculation for cach day of the past week and at the close of the week previous. It will be observed that in most of the ontge there has been an improvement of several per gating! von Tx Priwctrat, Stocks tn THE New Yorx Long Island... Bank, j. Reading, 2}; Morris Canal, 2; | Kentacky 6's }; Illinois, 6's, ‘These stocks have been accumulating in the hands of | the strong brokers of Wallstreet. Every decline com- pelled these houses to buy, to protect the supply they had on hand, until they obtained the control of the stock and consequently of the market. Being held by those having almost unlimited resources, they were not forced upon the market, but on the contrary every decrease in | prices reduced the quantity daily offered. The times have now become ripe for speculation, all the elements of trade, &e., are ina highly prosperous state, and we | should not be surprised to see a very extensive specula- tion for some months in stocks, cotton, corn and provi- sions. There is money enough to carry on a movement | of this nature in all these things, and prices for all are | low enough to give a wide margin for an advance. So | far as a speculative movement in cotton and corn is con- cerned, it could not commence at a more propitious pe- riod—at a period when the country generally would be- come benefitted by a moderate speculation in those arti- cles. Any advance in prices produced by a movement of this nature, would benefit the producers, as these pro- ductions have not yet left first hands. The farmers and planters would be materially aided by a rise in prices now, whereas should the improvement come later in the season, after the bulk of the crop had left first hands and gone into the hands of dealers and speculators, that class of operators would be the only class benefited by better prices, It is possible the demand from Great Britain for breadstuils may not be very extensive 1g) a8 the harvests of tnat country will be sufficiently ample for the consumption of a large part of the year, and the farmers of this country should bear this in mind and go- vern themselves accordingly. Speculators will, without doubt, attempt to monopolise the supply so as to control the market ini the spring, as they have immense facilities at command and will spread them through the western country, for the purchase of grain. Wheat and flour in- variably command better prices in the spring, and the probability ofan extensive demand from abroad for our bend:tuffs, is so great, that it would be good policy in | he producers to hold as long as possible, or at least until ering. Our predictions in relation to the subscriptions to the Erie Railroad will, without doubt, bo verified. The books opened on the Sth inst. at which time we stated that the three millions required would be taken before the end ofthe month. Twenty-five hundred thousand dollars of the three millions have already been taken, leaving only five hundred thousand to be subscribed during the re- maining eight days. It is a gratifying fact to know that a very large portion of the stock of this road has been taken by our actual business men—by those who have become satisfied that its completion will increase the trade and prosperity of the city. Very few capita, lists have subscribed so far, and we have no doubt the balance will be taken without any aid from the million, aires. A meeting of mechanics and traders is to betheld on the 24th inst, in relation to this great work, and we look for liberal subscriptions from these classes, The com- pletion of the Erie Railroad is no lenger a matter of doubt—it is ensured. Wo learn that a little over $200,000 of the capital stock of the Syraeuse and Oswego Railroad has been ta: ken at Syracuse, Oswego, and at other pla along or near the route. The balance—$150,000 —will probably be taken in this city. The books will be opened here for sub- scriptions inafew days. It is estimated that the whole line, thirty-six mi can be put in operation, with a heavy rail, for the capital stock, $350,000, This is a very important line and must, from its position, not only com: mania great deal of business, but must opena line of communication between tide water and lake navigation, that will give us the control of the Western trade, against any competition, “knd in spite of any rival route \ | tow, | Plumbe which may hereafter be completed. The enlargement and completion of the Welland Canal has opened a new era in Lake commerce and changed the course of trade upon those waters. Distinguished Arrivals—Mr. Gillett, Register of the Treasury, off to the New York Custom House, to bring up the Returns of Exports and Imports— Consulship—Ship Congress—Affairs at the Sand- wich Islands. ‘There will be an agitation in this pool of Siloam before long, though not by an angel. Something is going tobe done. In addition to the Hon. R. H. Morris, (your late Mayor,) Brown’s this evening, the distinguished U. 8 Com- | missioner with Texas, Hon A. J. Donelson, and Hon. Edward A. Hannegan, of Indiana, (U. 8. Senate.) t Coleman’s,we have at Mr. Gillett, Register of the Treasury, left, as we learn, this evening for a short visit to his residence in St. Lawrence county, New York. He will stop, going or returning, to assist Collector Lawrence an his deputies in making out his report of imports and exports to the Secretary of the Treasury, in readi- ness for the Secretary’s soe to Congress. It ap- pears that Collector Van Ness’s returns for his last quarter have not been made out, and that there is something of difficulty among the scribes of your Custom it 4 are to be plac d. For instance, a Jeng amount of couse, as to whose account certain goods goods were warehoused by Collector Van Ness, and the question has been raised whether the duties upon these goods are to be placed to the accounts ot Collector Van Ness, or with the next monthly returns of Collector Lawrence. It seems to us clear as mud that such receipts should be accounted for in the returns for the quarter upon which the 3 in the premises were received and warehot , ant not for any subsequent monthly or seakeseeh report ‘The delay in furnishing, or rather in finishing up the monthly and quarterly statements in your Custom House, may arise from the fact, that if the clerks had hurried themselves, a number of them | would have been thrown out of employment upon the succession to the Collectorshir of Collector Law- renee. Mr. Gillett is aman of business, and we are certain that he will have, by his visit to New York, | the returns from the great Custom House made out in season. 4 aeliles A Mr. Sherwood, of New York, it is said, has | been appointed Consul to, Messina, in the Mediter- | ranean ~The frigate Congress, which ought to have been | off sometime ago to the Sandwich Islands, has been | delayed by a further order of ten days at Nortolk. | Our commercial affairs at the Islands aforesaid are said to be in a state of suspension—the U.S. Com- | missioner Brown, and the U. Perhaps she is waiting for them. Speculations are rife as to the detention and destination of the Congress, and something further may be developed in a few day: Bavtimone, Sept. 20, 1845. | The Weather and Business—Scarctty of News—Gough and the Temperance Folks—The Row in Slicerdom— Markets, §c- ‘The weather continues delightful, end, after so warm and sultry a summer, is enjoyed to its full extent, The | cars from the west, and the boats from the south arrive | daily crowded with passengers, composed principally of merchants seeking their fall supplies, an unusual num- | ber of whom remain in Baltimore, whilst others continue | on without delay to New York and Philadelphia. | more has consequently been highly favored so far this Balti- season, and our merchants are doing all the busine that it is possible for them to attend to. They sell all day and pack all night, and are ready again in the morn ing to meet new customers, who are always at hand.— ‘The fact is, the wholesale trade of Baltimore within the past two years has more than doubled, and when our railroad reaches the Ohio, and is tapped by the Columbus and Cincinnati road, the improvement will be still more rapid and gratifying. There is nothing ofa local character werthy of note, and our papers are all dull and spiritless. ‘ ‘The temperance folks are looking with great anxiety for the promised statement from Mr. Gough relative to the recent triumph of Venus and Bacchus over his vir- tue and temperance. It is to be hoped that his fate will put an end to the practice, which of late has been so ex- tensively observed, of heaping honors snd favors on reformed debanchees and gu ter-wallowing drunkards, whilst a life of virtue and temperance is regarded as of not the slightest account. It is in effect offer- T | ing a premium to vice, by making reformation the surest CONUNDRUMS, hi road to distinction and honor. We have had frequent cases of the kindin Baltimore. I learn that the Rev. Henry Slicer is preparing for the press a pamphlet in reply to the recent attack on him as minister in charge of the North Baltimore station. The Rey. Henry is a tough colt to deal with, and we may ex- pect some interesting developments with respect to the pamphlet of Sweeny & Co., accompanied by a scorching which they will remember for the rest of their live: They have roused the lien, and will now have to tremb! athis wrath. We have a raw northeast storm with plenty of rain which renders it disagreeable, and puts one in mind of the approach of winter. A fire broke out yesterday afternoon in the row of houses opposite Moyamensing Hall, which destroyed the roofs of all of,them. It caught froma burning chimney. This row of houses is the same that was partially destroyed in the election riot of 1832, when the Irish Orangemen and whigs fired out of of the corner house upon the election ground, which was directly opposite. Mr. Robb, the owner of the row, received, after much trouble hy act of Assembly, acompensation from the public purse for his damages. ‘The fire of Saturday revived in the minds of the public the scenes of 1832.
