The musical part of the Philadelphians have for some weeks past been kept in a state of expectation and hope for the production of an original American Opera, the libretto and music of which are both by “‘natives to the manner born.” The Messrs. Fry, were the gentlemen who jointly undertook the task, and the result of their joint labors has been the opera of Leonora, which was produced last Wednesday. night, at the Chesnut. street theatre, to one of the most fashionable, brilliant, and crowded audiences that have assembled within its walls for some time past. Among the numerous influential and weighty persons that were present, we noticed Vice Presi. dent Geo. M. Dallas and family, Commodore Elliott, and in fact the dress circle and second tier of boxes were filled with the first families of Philadelphia, and so great had been the rush for seats for some days past, that the managers found it necessary to reserve part of sixteen of the boxes, on the first we are ments were got ites Beth ’s, I donot think ; however there was a ood many of Ido not think it it deal of applause given, and a 3 pa ienae being i bop} yeahs hehe ‘@ piece of composi » either music or Tricine’ to those of Morris in the “Maid of Saxony.” attend again to-night and on its second representa- tion the curtailments may have improved it some- Philadelphia. Before seven o’clock there was a numerous assem. blage in front of the theatre waiting patiently for the opening of the doors, and in a few minutes after that8took place, every ticket was sold and the house crammed. There were at least eighteen hundred present. The Opera itself is founded on the same story as Bulwer’s Lady of Lyons, and is composed of the same incidents, the.only alteration being that the characters of Col. Dantas, Madame Deschapelles, and Glavis, are omitted, and instead of a mother Claude has a sister. The scene also i islaid in Spain, inthe sixteenth century, instead of in Lyons. The following is the cast of characters :— Leonora (corresponding to Pi ine.) Mrs. Seguin. Julio Cc Mr. Frazer. Montalvo ef ,) Mr, Seguin, Valdor e apelle,) Mr. Tiichings. Mariana, Julio's sister ‘ w. Melnotte,) “Miss Ince. It is divided into three acts,in all comprising seven scenes. The orchestra consisted of fifty performers, under the direction of Messrs. Meignen and Chubb, and the chorus numbered seventy of both sexes, and among them were several amateurs of Philadelphia. ‘The scenery, properties, and costumes, were all new, and got up expressly for this occaasion; the-stage management was under the direction of Mr. Richings; and in fact no pains or expense has been spared in getting it up with the utmost attention to detail and scenic effect, The music of the piece was received very favorably, indeed. It is rather noisy occasion- ally, and many of the chorusses, and some of the concerted pieces, will bear, pruning very advan- tageously, as it was near one o’clock before the per- formance was concluded. All the business of the opera rests on the three characters supported by the Seguins and Frazer ; and in their hands, as eve one will suppose, the utmost was made of their parts. ‘There are one or two beautiful airs and duetts in the course of the piece, which, Whatever may be the opinion that the public may "finally form of the whole opera, will be certain to become favorites. The re oupings and tableaux were some of the most beuti- a pertect that we have ever seen on the stage, and added much to the eclat with which the whole affair went off. In fact, the complete mise en ped was perfect. The want of librettos amon audience was much felt, but we understan at they will be issued in a day or two, when the opera _ Shall have been condensed to a proper length. Atthe falling of the curtain, Mr. Fry was loudly called for, and, after some little delay, appeared and said, “that he must apologize for the incoherent re- marks that he was about to make, by pleading the absolute prostration he at that moment labored under, consequent on the intense and unremitting labor that had been demanded of him in the getting up of this opera. He igividually thanked them for the inte- rest they had displ. the applause they had bestowed on his work} but, for the music itself, he left it entirely in their hands, to approve of it or not, as they judged it worthy. He would state one thing, that it was entirely American. As long back as the year 1831 he had been struck with the fact that this country had neglected to keep up with the rest of the world, as regards music, and he had then la- mented that such was the case. He at that time commenced the regular study of music under the di- rection of hus friend Mr.Meignen, who was agraduate of the Conservatory ot Paris, the first musical schol in the world; and, with his assistance, he had con+ tinued his researches into the science of music. (Applause,) He would now distinctly say that he wished this producton to stand or fall ll by its own merits. (Great applause.) But not to ig kuin belonged ull the credit of the labor in this undertaking: the author of the libretto was entitled to much. ft had been a mooted pt as to whether the English ie guage was at al companying musical sounds ; and, in orde: that, the author, in this instance, had cae throng a course of study, to endeavor to mould the Pooh tay nage into the proper shape for music, flow far he had succeeded, they must be the judges of. (Great applause.) It had been stated in some of the papers that this was the firet American opera ever written. Such was not the case. Since the yous 1881, he had written not only one, but several grand operas ; but from various causes, none of them kad ever been pro- duced ; but still this, instead of being the first, was the last. It had been written since the month of February last, in his spare moments, and had been vi upon the stage in three weeks. He would here tende: his sincere thanks to Mrs. Seguin, the Prima Denns of the evening, the music of her part had been written with especial reference to her voice, and how she had executed it, the audience had heard; how they were satisfied, he could not know, (im- mense applause) but he knew that as far as he was concerne| ry he was satisfied. He also thanked Mr. Meignen for his efficient direction of the whole piece, and Mr. Chubb for his leading in the orchestra ; he also thanked the remai nor of the performers in a body, also the choristers, not only tor their performance that evening, but also for their attention to the rehearsals, He concluded br saying that if the audience were pleased with a music it was now theirs and they might take it; ifon the contrary, they ol hot like it, to reject it? % There was immense applause on his Tetirin, hind the e rtain, and the piece is announce: ony evening on week. ie music is heavy, very heavy; the being perfectly tedious and full of olay sccompan me if ae te plese generally does not rise al svedioerr ere are two or it, at 1 think will become Topas dal ad fire 3 a! for however, is moderate. demand is to a fair extent, and receipts are made of common quel je at 40 a 45c; prime, for city consumption, is held 50c.
