Peytona at the Canton Cowrse—-Will not run again—Uncle Sam preparing for a Storm—Baltimore Nativeism Dead —Steamboat Explosion and Loss of Life—The Repeal ers at loggerheads—The Seduction Case—A warning to those interested—Theatricals—Defunct Tylerites—Eus- tern Female High School. Peytona, ‘with eleven of her southern companions, | have arrived in this city, and taken up their quarters at the Canton Course, where our citizens are daily flocking to see he She is greatly changed inher carriage and appearance since she passed through this city about six weeks since, and it is doubted by some whether she will ever regain her former condition. Fashion is all gristle, whilst Peytona is all bone—the former soon regains all her strength, but the latter irretrievably loses some in every race. Fashion is still at Camden, and it is said that neither of them are ina condition to meet again be- fore next fall, when, I learn, there is an arrangement on foot for them to make the third and last trial on the ‘Washington course, in presence of the political jockeys of the nation. Unele Sam is evidently making preparations in and about these regions, fora brush with John Bull. Fort McHenry, in pursuance of orders received from govern- ment, is commencing to bristle with cannon, whilst the recruiting sergeant is daily marching those that he has already “caught” through the city, in an endeavor to catch more. A new spirit is also beginning to be perce, tible in our volunteer companies, where it was certainly much wi mm Nativeism, I mean political nativeism, has been born in this city, only to be followed by aspeedy dissolution and death. it was brought into existence through the united labors of those two redoubtable citizens, Somerset Baraés, Esq, and Andrew Jackson Jefferson Bandle.— Which of them acted the paternal or maternal part, | cannot say; but certain it is, that death must follow spee- dily to bar cause that they touch, let its principles be ever so good. The secretary, A. J. J. B. Esq, has called a meeting of the party to-night, to transact ‘business of importance,” but they wont come. ‘The Repealers in this city are at loggerheads. The majority of the association, at the last meeting. agreed to.dissolve, whilst the minority, under the lead of an ad- mirer of Chinese poetry, and a would-be Baltimore agi- tator, entered their protest against its dissolution. 4 meeting of the dissenters is to be held at Hall” to-morrow evening, when a rich scene may be an- ipated. Dr. Ollapod will be there in all his glory. The last “ indiscretion,” as they are now calied in fashionable parlanc still the town talk, though no in reference to the matter. I could name to you adozen ladies, in this city, of respectable families, who still persist in the same career, and who cannot much longer resist their fate. Let them take heed lest they fall likewise. : ‘Theatre theatricals, in this city, continue to progress riect bankrupt rate, whilst Museum theatricals The latter is cheaper, and gene- rally better, whilst our church-geing population can overcome their scruples to the Theatre by going to the Museum. The defunct Tyler men from the Custom House, still groan most piteously, and one of them, Charles Soran, £8q., has gone into quite an extensive newspaper contro- versy to prove that he was removed because “ somebody else wanted the office.” A writer, under the signature of “A Worky,” attacks Mr. S., aad he replies, and so they keep up a regular fire, though some persons are cruel enough to think they both come from one source, whilst the great public don’t care a straw about the mat- ter. The fact is, Tyler men are universally odious in a political point of view, though they may be clevar fel- lows otherwise, and I would recommend them all to give up the ghost at once, and like my good natured friend ‘Thomas Lloyd, Esq., of sorrel horse memory, who had the honor to receive the first cut of the guillotine, go to work again at their old business—if they have any. I hear of a case in the Eastern Female High School, which should be visited with a severe reprimand at least, from the School Commissioners. LX, rs. public, knowing Boston. [Correspondence of the Herald.} Boston, June 4, 1845, Great Trial in the United States District Court—Robert Rantoul Jr., Esq.—.ind General Matters. A very important trial is progressing in the U. S. District Court now in session in this city, Judge Sprague presiding. The charge is brought against Captain Peter Flowery for fitting out the “Spitfire” for the purpose of trafficking in slaves, The Court has been engaged upon itsince Monday last, and the case excites a very great degree of interest. The counsel for the defence are Messrs. Rogers and Saunders—the senior especially be- ing a most able and accomplished lawyer, and a difficult person to trouble. The defence in the hands of these gentlemen will be ably conducted, and all that can be done for the accused, will be effected by Messrs. R. & S. The government are fortunate in commanding the sérvic- es of Hon, Robert Rantoul, Jr.,(U.8.District Attorney) in this important and intricate case. Many of the witnesses are Spaniards, and the vessel’s papers and other docu ments incident tothe case are found to be in Spanish manuscript. Mr. Rantoul is entirely at home in the m: ter, and his superior and intimate knowledge of the lan- ‘uage enables him to take hold ofthe subject most readi- iy. During the three days already occupied in this case, a most admirable tact has been evinced by Mr. Rantoul in thee gen management of the cause—and he has exhibited a thorough ond ready know- ledge of maritime law. An immense amount of labor has evidently been expended in collectin the facts and documents relating to the subject, as nal asthe evidence of the numerous witn and the go- u the most weighty and intricate ca presented betore this court. Up government evidenc ing, and the case will occupy the attention of the court fora week probably.— As faras it bas transpired, the’ facts elicited mak it a good case for the plaintiff, and pretty clear that Un- cle Sam will systain the charg ‘There is but little matter in the way of news transpir- ing among now. Since the avalanche of remo- mals in the Custom House, which took effect on Monda; we have had nothing to stir the citizens; and, save the usual murmurs ol the “outs,” there is very little music passing. The removed disappointed, and being mostly democrats, think it harsh ton to have displaced them, when they ha he presen diligently for ty. pointees, how excellent arrang ment, and advise the unsuccesstul, or ousted, to keep cool, and go to work at some honest employment. “Itis along lane that has no turnin it,” say the first, and whether or not any thunder is to be bottied up for future use, doth not appear as yet. A new democratic paper is to be started at once in Lowell, and another at Spring- field, it is said, and it willnot be very strange if sowe- body should “hear from Annanias” aon. Morgor THE Fire 1n Querec.—We have received the Quebee papers, from which we select the fol- lowing. One assertion we may safely make, that the amount of property lost is not so far magnified, and the sacrifice of human life is underrated. ‘Ihe total loss has been computed with the utmost nicety possible, and found to be between one million and one million and a half of pounds! or, in dollars, from $4,000,000 to $6,000,- 000. The loss of life cannot be estimated. We hear of many private interments ofthe remains found by sup- posed relatives, and itis asserted that about forty vic- tims of the conflagration have so far been inhumed, and that many, very many, will never be discovered. ‘This ment we fully credit, from ourown observations, as the first sufferere fled toward town, and, from the irregu- lar and distant outbreaks of the fire from its origin, they could not have retraced their way, and must have perish- ed, encompassed by the flames which, from moment to moment, narrowed the limits of apparent safe them. We have abundant evidence, from of women, children, and aged persons having perished, it the moment prior to death, fancied them- } so quickly and insiduously did the fire vastating progress. The scene of desolation pai beyond human power to describe.— Baftled by the sudden and unlooked for directions the fire took, the unfortunate refugees at last yielded the: selves up to apathetic despair. From street to street wended their melancholy oY laden witn their cl dren and the most precious of their household goods, but still the insatiate cause of their misfortune traced their path with unrelenting fury. In the greater number of instances the inmates of dwellings barely escaped with their lives, and many of these were severely burnt, so sudden was the on-coming of the flames. Toward the afternoon, a panic seemed to have seized the inhabitants ofthe burnt and burning districts, and from extreme ac- tivity a perfect apathy succeeded—they knew not wither to fly, nor what todo. The blocked streets were in a blaze'as they sped through them ; furniture took fire in carts, or caleches, as it was hurried off, and the heat and dense volumes of smoke which ever and anon swept athwart the suburbs, enervated the active and paralysed the exertions of those even disinterested. None were safe. Women, children, nay, even men, sat weeping by the road side, bereft of their little property, and beggar- ed by the destruction of the fruits of their economy the i_vestment of their savings. Many knelt im prayer to the Great Disposer of events, seeking his protection and succor, and as the clergy ofthe parish passed, rows of humbled and desolate beings fell at their feet, craving their blessing.
