Pumapetrwa, May =4, 1845. The New Grand Opera—An American Rossini. The opera—the new opera, or dé’tis most frequently styled, “Fry’s Opera”—engages our attention and is the eat “talked of” of the day. Mr. Somebody has told you that the music is composed by William H. Fry, and the libretto by his brother J. Reese Fry, both of this city, and further informg you, it is proposed to produce the opera in a style equal to Norma. Permit me further tastate, it will exceed in magnificence of costume, stage scenery, number of choristers and force of orchestra, anything ever produced in this country. Wm. Hl. Fry, the composer—now the American Ros sini—has been rehearsing for six nights, and will con’ tinue to do so until Saturday next, 31st. From fifty to seveuty gentlemen and ladies, amongst whom may be found Some of our best amateur singers, who have come forward, or rather have been drawn into the choruses by the irresistible beauty of the music. Now add to this, say some twenty to thirty voices now daily rehearsing at the theatre under a competent master, and you have an idea of the strength and excellence wisich will be found in the choruses. ‘The orchestra will be composed most- ly of professors—members of our Musictl Fund Society, Whose excellence was fairly proved in lately performing L. Meignen’s beautiful compos n, e Soldier's Dream”—if indeed their superiority was not previously established. ‘The drilling of both orchestra and choruses s going on, and my word for it, the opera will be ‘‘ slip” through the first night, as well'as is generally found after a dozen public performances. ‘The Seguins and Frazer are delighted with their parts, and [ was told last evening by a friend, (but this is between youand | and the lamp-post,) that Mrs, Seguin (estimable fady) thinks to win fresh laurels; indeed it cannot well be otherwise, as the music and the "plot are both calculated to enlist our tenderest feelings. ‘The libretto, very un- like the insipid trash you generally find them, is on the contrary a beautiful’ composition’ of itself, and when I say there are passages qn it quite as beautiful as the Prince’s deseription of his palace on the lake of Como, in the Lady of Lyons, from which p) play the plot of the opera is taken, 1 neither stretch truth or give unreasonable praise. With this then I close, and sink back again into “no- thingness,” until Monday night, June 2d, when the first performance will take place, a full account of which I shall take the earliest opportunity of giving you, until which time believe me, Yours, ke.
