Description of Lancaster City, Pennsylvania: A resident of Western Pennsylvania, near the ill- | starred “Iron City,” which was and is the pride of ‘all that region, I have recently, for the first time, | journeyed leisurely through the extended interior of | the ancient and populous commonwealth of my ne, tivity, until [have reached itsmetropolitan city. My mind throngs with delightful recollections of the trip, and I now clam the privilege of an “* occasion- al correspondent,” that I may communicate some cf my raptures to the dear public. Iwill give you my | impressions on the garden spot of all the State—the city and county of Lancaster. Itis a standing marvel with all foreigners who have seen our country, that we Americans should be in such hot haste to make the tour of Europe before we have seen und made ourselves familiar with the beautiful and magnificent, the sublime and stupen- dous configurations of our native land. ‘he marvel is both natural and just. Surely, surely, there is not in all the foreign world a region of greater fertility and beauty than the county Pulatine, of which I would now discourse. Lancaster county was one of the earliest established in the State, and although portions of it have, from timego time, been taken off and erected into six eter ets, its ares is still one thousand square miles—it %8 still as large as the State of Delaware. In. natural advantages, 11 is the richest in the State. The Susequehanna rive: washes its border for nearly fifty miles, beside: which, it ts bountifully irrigated by the Conestoga, Pequea, Conewango, Octorara, Chiquesalunga and other creeks, tributaries to the river. The bowels of the earth are richly stored with minerals. .With e Bophlaton in 1840 of nearly ninety thousand persons, it had more than thirty-four buskels of edible grains. exclusive of potatoes, to every individual in it. It: total capital in manufactures 1s moreover a million and aquarter. The valuation of real and persona! ibject to taxation by the county, in 1842. (000,000. _ The city of Lancaster contains » population bordering on ten thousand. It was for many years tne seat of government of the State, which was removed to Harrisburg in 1812. The building is still standing in which the Congress of the Revolution held their deliberations, when they retired from Philadelphia, and before they went to York. The city 1s regularly laid out, with broad streets, crossing each other at rizht angles, and are chiefly paved and curbed, and neatly kept. The houses more recently builtare lofiy and commodious, and equal in elegance and beauty to any in the State The principal landholders of the county are equal in point of possession to the olden patriarchs or mo- dern nobility of Europe; and in the city there are also many of princely fortune, who have covered the sur- rounding country with palace-like residences. Lang- don Cheeves once owned and lived in one of these, and W. M. Meredith, Esq., of Philadelphia, has re- cently purchased another, ‘‘ Wheatland,” of T. F. Potter, E'sq., the brother-in-law of the gallant Com- modore Stockton. Colonel Cameron, the brother ct the new Senator, Gen. Simon Cameron, ig the possessor of another of these splendid country re- sidences, and his hospitality 1s as princely as his home. In this county were born Robert Fulton, Dr Rameay, the historian, Dr. Eberle, Hugh Lawson White, and many other persons of national fame J.C. Calhoun’s parents once resided here, and he narrowly escaped being born here. Here sidence of James Buchanan, The great wealth of the county, and the large amount of law business uransacted, has assembled in its courts some_ of the ablest lawyers in the country. Thaddeus Steven here practices law to the tune of $20,000 per annum, ind ©. B. Penrose, late solicitor of the Treasury 0! the United States, has just moved thither. The udge of the Court of Common Pleas, Hon. Ellis Lewis, is universally considered as profound a ju- rist and as able a man, as the democratic party can boast of, Before a jury he is unrivalled. I never heard his equal incharging one, except Chiet Jus. tice Taney. He is now in the prime ofdife, and ere he is’ ten years older, will be as well and fa- vorably known throughout the nation ashe is now throughout the State. Gov. Porter, I heme, otter- ed him a place, then vacant,on the Supreiiie bench of the State, which he declined. He is now spoken of tn connection with the bench of the Supreme Court ot the United States, andin connection with other high official trusts. Whilst here, the town was crowded with stran- gers, mainly attracted, ke myself, to hear deter- mined the celebrated case of the Northampton Bank vs. Winder, the record of which was remitted from Lehigh county for trial here, under the provisions of aspecial act of the Assembly. Dallas, Meredith and Stevens were retained as counsel, and the amount involved was about $100,000. At the same term was aleo determined a novel suit, brought by the trustees of Mra. Yatea, widow of John Yates, deceased, to recover damages for the non-perform- ance of a marriage contract entered into Between the parties, which stipulated that in case the former survived the latter she was to receive $20,000 from his estate in lieu of dower. Verdict for the plain- tiffs. ARISTIDES. Boston. (Correspondence of the Herald:] Boston, May 18, 1845. Improvements in Buwilding—Progress of Boston. This chief provincial town of Yankeedoodledom seems to be rapidly on the increase, and may now becalled the Liverpool of: America. In its efforts, however, to go ahead of your city, it may stumble and break its neck. It has elements and re- sources, however, to make a very large commercial city, but the iden of competing with New York is idle and absurd enough. In viewing Boston we must take no city out of New England into consideration. As the centre of this section of the Union she looms up into something worth thinking about. Let one who walked throurh her streets in 1835 pass over the city in 1845—over the newly made land—and through the freshly laid out streets—and he will see the vast improvements that have been made. in It is useless to enumerate the new buildings that have been erected, for they have already been men- tioned in newspaperparagraphs. It is only worth our while to notice one or two of those in contemplation. Amongothersa stupendous hotel and a magnificent Atheneum may be mentioned. The hotel is to vie with all those now occupied in any part of the world, tha Will probably ‘equal, fe-wike ened ephendor.' the Astor of New York. It 1s to face on Tremont street, and will be two hundred and thirteen feet front. Its depth will be one hundred and sixty feet on Bloom- field street, and one hundred and forty on Hamilton Place. It will have two hundred and fifty large and lofty rooms, including halls, parlors, chambers, &c. &e._ There are to be three entrances: one on Hamil- ton Place for the ladies; 8e on Bloomfield street; and the principal one on Tremont street. The build- ing will be four stories in height, with the street stor for stores, to be, I believe, fifteen in number, and eac! to rent at $1000 per annum. This hotelis to be owned by a company which is composed of some of the “first men” of the city. — Abbot Lawrence, Caleb Eddy, S. 8. Lewis, Robert G. Shaw, &c., are the leading spirits in the enterprize; and they have'a charter, giving them a capital stock of $500,000. All the land necessary for the building hae been purchased or recured, and we may, there- fore, look upon the erection of the hotel as pretty cer- tain. It is understood here that the hotel is leased to Capt. Joseph Comstock, the popular commander of the fine steamer Massachusetts, now running on the Sound, and Major Barton, favorably known as the conductor of several of the best hotels in the country. They, as the master spirite of the establishment, an‘! will make it one of the most popular houses in the country. It is to be finished in two years, and called the “Colun- bian H ouse.” Itis, perhaps, unnecessary to say that a hotel hike this isneeded here. All the houses now in operation, the Tremont, American, &c., are constantly crowded; and, on the arrival of a steamship, they overflow; the surplus lodgers sleep, none but themselves know where. ‘The Atheneum building isto be asplendid one.— It ig to be constructed of Quincy granite, and will be very extensive in its arrangements. Your Sovie- ty Library editice will not be. surpassed, but it will be equalled. The Atheneum here is aided in its operations by the munificence of individuals; the Society Library in New Yark receives no aid apart from its yearly. stipulated subscriptions. Jt is a great pity that New York does not possess a few of the public spirited men of Boston. There is tod mich ‘Gndividuality” in your city to improve it as us town has been and continues to be. | . | _Iptocy 1s Kewtrucxy.—According to the Frankfort | Yeoman, there arg 413 idiots im Kentucky, supported atthe public charge. Ander~ son—Harlem Railroad—The Orawanpam House— Sc., §e., &e. Tam making a brief visit at the Plains, and as I feel “i? the vein” this afternoon, I will throw open my window, and as the pure, fresh air pours in my sano- tum, I will endeavor to give you an illumination as to things in general in this charming village. The weather has been remarkably pleasant of late, and the crops flourish finely. All the farmers, for thirty miles around, say there will be a “terrible harvest.” The flowers never, I believe, looked half so delicious as they do now, and never were they blooming so profusely. ‘To ‘a New Yosker flowers are one of the greatest treats in the world, especial- ly at this season of the year. I always loved them, and I trust I always shall, for, in my opinion, there are but few Lepr a in nature that can compare with them in point of beauty. As I write a pretty girl is coming out of a love of « cottage “ over the way.” She bas been making short call, and, trom all appearances, “the lady in a cap” is urging er to come again. See with what grace she kisses her hand as she shuts the garden gate! And really, what a pretty hand it is, to be sure! How white and delicate! And see with what -ase and grace she trips aloug on the green sward! fhe ground almost invites her to press it. She has increased her pace, and is now fairly ona run. Aht what is the matter ? She stops! Her gaiter is unloos- -d, and she must make it easy. What a fascinating foot she has! The remains of “that tree,” I opine, aever bore such a sweet burden before. It ixed aow, and how archly she turns that pretty face sround to see if anybody is looking! She fairly oats along like a flake of down, but ho! she suddenly before the ‘‘ white gate” opposite. It is Miss J— , and she is a boarding-school miss, by all that is beautiful ! ; Tam afraid, however, I am getting tiresome, and will say what I have to, in as few words as possible. There has been no horrible murders in the place for alinost an‘age. ‘The editor of the village paper says, something of the kind, just now, would be a god- send, for every thing in the way of news is “stale, flatand unprofitable” = 4 The wees are going it with a particular loose ness in the building line. New houses are going up every day, and the most of them reflect great credit on their builders. Lyisited the farm of Hon. Joseph H. Anderson, the present popular democratic member of Congress irom this district, the ether day. It is one of the largest and most extensively cultivated in Weatches- ter county, The reason of its being in such fine order, is because the proprietor works on it himself, and sees that every thing ig done as it should be. [ found the honorable gentleman hard at work im the field, and old Sol was giving his good-natured countenunce a most woful scorching. He always enjoys good health, and was ever an ardent lover of agricultural pursuits, Some of his brother mem- bers should follow his excellent example. The Legislature before its close, granted a chartet for the continuation of the Harlem Railroad to Al- bany, and the workmen ae already drivimg b ness astonishingly. Sinc®its completion to ite Plains, the village has been quite a different place. Strangers pour in in quantities innumerable, aye / thing bears a cheerful and lively aspect. The ‘ Orawanpam House,” at the termination of the railroad, is a fine place for visitors to stop at when they come this way. Messrs. Oakley and Smith, the gentlemanly proprietors, spare neither pains nor expense to make their patrons comfortable and “athome.” Their house 1s beautifully built, and is a most magnificent specimen of modern architecture. It is named after an old Indian Chief, who many years ago lived ina “log cabin” on the same ground. He was in several skirmishes with the British, and at the battle of White Plains, he wus distinguished for his pugnacicus propensities. Che “ Orawanpam” will become mmensely popular during the summer. i fi I pray you and the gods will forgive me for this scrawl It has, however, one merit, it is—brief. She willallow the mildew of suspicion to settle upon the character of an individual, till its corrosion seems to have worked upon it eternal damage. It foster there. Stung by remorse, perhaps, the perjuror leit that county, and became a wayfarer in the west. After many years, Justice laid her heavy iron-grasp upon him, and sent him retribution in the shape of poverty, sickness and miséry. He became aninmate of our township hospital, the poor house.— Death was very nigh to him. Moved by the prickings of that conscience which “doth make cowards of us all,” he began to fear the monster, and to call for very present help in time of trouble. A neighboring clergyman has- tened to the dying perjuror’s bedside. The man uttered a confession of the crime, and as a feeble token of repent- ance, requested the whole to be noted down, and sent back to the defrauded and despoiled individual. The confession was sent, but so incredible did the story ap- 1 so fixed were the impressions of the citizens of of their neighbor, and of the innocence of the real perjuror, that naught but the highest written evie dence could remove them.
