eyes to the cypher-like valution which they main tain at the head of line. We regard it as cer- tain that John Jon politico-ludicro-administra- tive editorial domination even over the faithful Corporal’s Guard, is extinct. He is a dead politi- cian, at last, the Superlatively grotesque, and ineflu- bly ridiculous John Jones. He is sewed up, es Col Beaton would say, effectually sewed up. But what are the chances? What are the prospects? What are the signs of the times? There will be @ Sradual, deliberate, and pretty general removal of primary and subordinate officers. ‘The movement ot yesterday plainly indicate this determination All the foreign missions are to be transterred to new hands—the principal consulships, a!so—the custom house collectors—the chief postmasters— surveyors—Indian agents, Wc. will, we are almost assured, be transferred to new men, and to men 4s fresh from the people as circumstances will allow The cast-off garments ot Mr Van Buren’s admin- istration will come in as old clothes, for what they will fetch at a vendue ; and many will be secrifioe’ at less than prime cost. But they are busy, busy as bees, drumming up certificates, and presenting their letters oF expulsion by “ Tippecanoe and Tyler too.” ** What’s the news?” “* What’s the news?” is the incessant demand every where. ‘*Amos Kendall goes to the City Post Office, don’t he?” ‘To be sure he does—that’s settled ; and old Amos deserves at; for he worked d—d hard for the party, and is d—d poor into the bargain.” ‘* What's to be done with Graham?” “ What with Captain Rynders ?” “What with Jewell? “ What with Slamm?” s What with Mayor Moms ‘ What with Flagg ?” “ What with Col. Butler of New York, and Col. Butler ot Kentucky?” “ Do. they talk of sending the be latter to Mexico?” ‘They do, by G—d.” « bes soul, but that’s too bad! Who would mee thous t that Marcy would have been breterred to the Kentucky war horse for the War Department! There is something putrescent in Denmark. Polk is swinging round to the Northern 1 Buren-Benton taction. He is going to betray MS . South, and his party, like another G—d d traitor, by G—d. And if he don’t come out a clear whig, for a bank, before his four years are out, there is no truth in straws.” These, and a thou- sand similar expressions and opimions, may be heard at any hour of the day, in any group of a dozen men, at any point between the Capitol and the President’s, at th juncture. All is ‘bubble, bubble, toil and trouble.” But the Bonifaces are gushering.in the dollars from the office.seekers ; id they say, ‘* Welcome, gentlemen, to the ex- tent of ouraccommodations, and of your finances.” Probably within the last ten days, not less than $500,000 have been left in Washington by the camp tollowers of the new administration. But Washington, like a sponge absorbs nothing is seen of it more. Te requires millions to keep up in the Federal City the simplest vegetable existence, a sort of half-suspended animation. On Monday we shall have new and more interesting developments. The President is launched into the current of the horse-leech clamor: ‘give ! give! give!” and superhuman strength alone would be competent to resist the overwhelming tide of appli- | o, cations. He must float with the stream, and swim like an old salt, or he will go down. His only chance is to keep a sharp look-out for breakers, sharks, and their pilot-fish ; and to pull ahead with a steady helm between the beacon: plight of the constitution and the light-house of lemocrac Our associates, to whom we have confided deti s, will advise you accordingly. But mark it, we are in the very surt of a ground-swell. Fino. Philadeiphi (Correspondence of the N. Y. Herald.) Puttapetpuia, March 9, 1845. Mysterious Movements in the Custom House— Lawyers Migrating—The Herald—The Politi- ciams— The Weather and the Ladies. James Gorpon Bennett, Esq:— Dear Smr—Everything is very quiet and mild here. A great confusion took place in the Custom House to-day. The bell leading from the private room once occupied by Nicholas Biddle, Exgq.,inio the main building, was rung with great violence. The Clerks were all trembling in their shoes for a few moments, expecting it was a summors from head quarters to leave their situations. paired in great numbers to the room to learn the cause. No one could be found or seen, and they came to the conclusion that “Old Nick” was warn- ing them of their sinful ways. It is rumored here that the late Attorney General, Ovid F.Johneon and Ashbel Green, Jr, Esqs.. are going to your city to enter upon the practice of the law. They arecon- sidered very able men in commercial suits, and stand number one at the bar here. I was very much amused this afternoon at the United States Hote) with two western merchants, one reading the “Herald” the other the “Commercial Advertiser.” One asked the other if he read nothing i the Herald? His reply was “No.” “Hi found every thing in the Herald that sia ted himin his business.” ‘* Through an advertise- ment that he saw in the Herald the last seasor, he was induced to purchase his goods from a house in New York, which he purchased ten per cent cheaper than any other merchant in the town where he resided.” The only reason he assigned for it was, that the Herald had so extensive a cir- culation, that induced so many more merchants to cometo the house he purchased of,that theycould af- ford tosell cheap. Every thing is very quiet in this city, and in excellent order. The politicians have all returned from Washington cursing Jimmy Polk ata great rate, because he will not provide all of them with offices Great dissatisfaction pre- vails. No one had a desire to vicit the Gallery o! Fine Arts this day, as they conld see the “ graces” themselves passing up and down Chestnut street, with all the bloom and beauty that ever graced any city.
