rk or the other eastern cities, invari: bly , or to become attrac- y then go sout and west, and here they make a hit. They get among @ different class of persons, and those who come to be amused with. out any desire to be laypercritical. The conse- quence is that their powers are excited to their ut- most capacity. They strike out many happy con- ceptions and bright sparks of genius, mingled with much extravagaace and nousense, and rhapsody. They are bold—their boldness pleases—and they hit upon originalities, and originalities always tell. They then begin to come from the wild western backwoodsmen tothe more densely populated and artificial States. ‘The nearer they draw to the cities, the keener does criticism hecome, and minds of the actors huving become enlightened. by intercourse with multitudes, they perceive the cha- ractets of their audiences, prune their excrescencer, abandon their extravagance and nonsense, and re tain the originalty and happy conceptions which they have strack out, and thus create a sensation where previously they had failed. This was the process of schooling which Forest underwent, and Miss Cushmen and othera who could be bamed, and withont which they would have been nothing’ And tnisis the process which Miss Clarendon has been going through, and which we hope will have an equally beneficial effect, that she may attain to the eminence deserved by her genius. There is to be a meeting this evening at Fuller’s Hotel of citizens and others who are disposed to be partakers in an effort to get up a ball for the relief and benefit of Mr. Burton and the other actors who are sufferers by the late fire, many having lost their entire wardrobe, It is to "be hoped that the libe- ralty which their position calls {or will be gene- rously extended to them. Wasuineton, Friday night, March 7, 1845. Democratic Caucus—Bancroft—Prosper M. We more— Office Getting—The Cabinet and the Kit- hen Cabinet—Commodore Elliott The democratic Senators held a caucus this mor, ning, to determine on their action relative to the nomination of Mr. Bancroft, iu time for their next sitting on Monday. Their determination has not yet leaked out. In the meantime, there are al sorts of rumors afloat, and other causes of opposi- tion are being suggested. One of themis, that Mr. Bancroft went to Tennessee after the presidential election, and that hisselection is supposed to have been arranged there, with the concurrence and ad- vice of Andrew Jackson, who wished thereby to secure the good will of Mr. Bancroft to insure a full and good history of his administration of the affairs of the cana It is said, too, that the Jackson influence will prevail in this administra- tion, and great anxiety isexhibited by all the poli- ticians. Prosper M. Wetmore, whose nomination for Navy agent at New York by Captain Tyler, fell not pers, probable he will get it. Polk is said to have adopted a prin- cipal of action in relation to his adminie- tration, which, it acted upon, will entirely dispense with the aid of any kitchen ce- binet, and prevent the members of any such from pocketing pickings and stealings,” ereto- fore. It is well known that General Jackson and Mr. Tyler were very much in the habit of acting per se, Without any consultation with their cabinet; on matters too of great importance. This gave power and influence to the clique or kitchen cabi- net, which could obtain any influence over the Ex ecutive go as to affect his nominatiens. Mr. Polk’s plan,*to dispense with these “powers behind the throne,” is to submit all nominations and other Executive business to the consideration of the cabinet, and take a vote thereupon. The cabinet is composed of six officers, and with the President there will be seven, so that four will be a majority, and if this pan be carried out it will make a vast hanes} in the state of affairs and mode of obtaining office, Commodore Elliott had his pocket picked at the White House on Inauguration day. The thief de- prived him of his pocket book, which cae several relics, which the old Commodore prized very highly, One wasa letter from Gen. Jacksov, congratulating him on his restoration to his posi- tionia the service—praising Young Hickory—and predicting a most popular administration under his auspices—and also containing a lock of the old General’s hair, as a memento for the Commodore. Another wasa letter from Mrs. Madison enclosing a lock of Mr. Madison’s hair, and there were several others. Tne old Commodore says the thief may keep all the money the wallet contained, and be peteauy, welcome, if he will but return the relics, which he prizes so highly. ‘Wasuinaton, March 7, 1845. Eprtor Meraup:— The flood, though much abated, remains above high-water mark—plainly indicating the large pro; portion of visitors for a more personal purpose than a mete view of the inauguration; and these gen tlemen say they don’t know what to make of Coi Polk—he examines no papers—he makes no pro- mises—and what is worse, he has not promised that he will promise any appointments. We vicit- ed the White House in company with several mem- bers of the House. The throng of visitors war large, and respectable, and hungry—and they came away hungry, scratching their heads, instead ot smacking their lips. Buchanan and Cave Johnson were surrounded by lean men and fat men, but ali hungry, with their hats off and their best foot fore- most—but it wouldn’t do. A cabinet council was aaa eried nd the crowd sloped. They are ta up the di gy Carpeta,to replace them with som thiig clean and decent. The Pennsylvania men are 1n ecstacies, but next winter will bring them « cooler, in a vill reducing the tariff upon iron. It is bound to be done. The “ins” are alarmed, the “ outs” are indignant, and between them the President is tormented night and d The tem- perance people are absolutely outraged, for gin cock-tails, and brandy and water, and raw whiskey are the order of the day, day in and day out, and night in and night out.
