Great importenee. As the season advances, and the erops progress to maturity, accounts frem the growing sections are looked for with a great deal of anxiety. Advices from the west speak very discouragingly ofthe prospect of the ‘Tobacco crop now in the ground, and in many sections it is estimated that no more than half an average crop will be secured. The crop of 1848 was very light, being only about two-thirds of an average one. The crop of Ken- tucky last year was nearly equal to an average. In East and West Tennessee and in Missouri, the weather was un favorable throughout the season, and the yiela much re- duced. The same unfavorable symptoms have been observed in the growing crop; but at this time in the season it is difficult to tell what may be the result, or what favorable or anfavorable weather may exist between this and harvest time. The exports from this country up to 1843, for a series of years, and the great fluctuation in value and quantity, show how ttle dependence can be placed from year to year on the extent of our total exports, and how impos- sible it is to make any estimates for the future. Vauur ov THe Exronts or Tonacco rrom tHe Unite rats ron Ten Yea +85.755,968 1831 We see by this table a variation in one sae of nearly five millions dollars in value. This variation has been produced principally by great fluctuations in quotations. ‘The annexed table will show the quantity and value ex- ported, Exports or Topacco FROM THE ME Srarge, “al ue. + 100 599 +. 78,995 a 9.803 937 In 1839, the exports were only about half the quantity exported in 1842, but still the value was three hundred thousand dollars more. Compare the years 1841 and 1842, and nearly the same resujt will be seen. The ex- ports in 1841, were valued at $3,000,000 more than those of 1842, notwithstanding the number of hhds. exported was nine thousand less. To arrive at the cause of these great fluctuations in value, it is necessary to make a com. parisen of quotations in the principal exporting market for a series of years. 3 Fosscee in New Onumane, if Since 1839 prices have fallen all of two hundred per cent, The decline has been gradual through every year from that time to this. At the current quotations forto- bacco in the principal exporting markets, the shipmentsfor 1844, must be very large, to nett an average value, The exports from New Orleans this year have been larger than for the same period during the previous ten, Anpivars, Fxrornta ano Stocxs or Towacco at New Onveans, ror Tew Years, From Sept. ist, eaeH Year, to June 19, Exps. There is not that increase in the consumption ef this article that there is in other agri- oulwural products of the country.
