‘BY THE SOUTHERN MAIL. From Washington. — Our private accounts from Washington last ening are very curious. It is said that Captain Tyler intends to make a powerful demonstration in New York, principally through the Custony House and Post Office. The noble Captain begins to per- ceive that the whole corps of office-holders in this city have been deceiving him altogether—and that his power here has been used for the benefit of Mr. ‘Webster, Mr. Van Buren, or Mr. Any-body, but mot Mr Tyler. As.soon as Mr. Calhoun shall reach Washington, it is expected that a new and powerful impulse will be given not only to foreign affairs, but to internal affairs affecting the adminis- tration and the chances of Captain Tyler for the succession. The fruit is agaia ripening for the tenth time. ! The following articles are taken trom the Madi- sonian of Monday night, and may be considered indicative of the feelings and purposes now enter- tained in the White House :— «Tux Ponti Voror.”—The National Intelligencer is i ious, but not ingenuous. Jt is partial and one-sided om the Texas question, representi Prople, and that portion residing Mazon’s and Dixon's line. It is not a National intelligen. cor on this subject, but @ sectional and partis! intelligex- cor. The Southern perton ofthe nation should not fail to observe this. This morning's Intelligencer devotes nearly six columns to extracts from sundry Northern pers, and presumes to head them ‘the public ice.” Out of twenty extracts from different newspa- pers, only three are de from south of Mason’s ‘and Dixon’s line, and those three entitled toveryllittle gene- ral consideration. It seized everyextract that leaned against annexation, but excluded all notice of the numerous pa- pers at the North, and the atill greater number at the South, that are in favor of annexation. Yet this partial jection {from a few factions, not to say treasen- able demonstrations, the ‘Intelligencer presumes to mis- name “the public voice!” We say treasonable, because those whe declare, if the constituted and lawful autho- tities of this Government shall think proper to annex ‘Texas to the United States, that “ the Union is ipso fac dissolved,” are traitors, aud deserve to be branded a: auch, gnd held up to the execration of the patriot citizen: of the Republic. The seditious language of which O’Con- nell has been convicted, is nothing in comparison with the language employed by some of the fastious editors quoted by the Intelligencer. If that journal aspires to @ Notional character, let it give its readers the benefit of seeing and hearing both sides—and not merely both sides of the same party, but both sides of the Potomac. And we say, in the patriotic language of Washington, “ frown indignantly upon the first dawnings of any attempt to alienate one portion of this union from another.” Goov! Goov!! Goov!!!—We humbly beg Mr. Web. ater’s pardon. We beg pardon of the Intelligencer, of the Commercial Advertiser, of the New York American, ke. &c. We have been duil of comprehension in supposing for a moment that the “intellectual giant” sued to be ad: mitted into the whig party for the purpose of promoting Mr. Clay’s election We achnowledge our mistake, i supposing for a moment that the “Great Secretary,” whose letter writers and presses, aud kindred.and friends, are all quartered on the Government, would ultimately detray the President, his kind benefactor, and “ go over” to Mr. Cla personal and political enemy. The events of the lust few ye ave undeceived us. Mr. Webster is till true to the Administration. He has, by a sudden and unexpected blow, severed the Whig arty at Mason's and Dixon's line Never was there a Raiser oF = more ancoetaful: stroke of policy. It was worthy of a “gigantic mind!” Atfew days—only afew days—before the arrival of Mr Clay in Washington, Mr. Webster! departs, carrying with him the entire Whig { Without consultation with the acknowledged feed ofthe Whig party—without Mr Clay's “advice and Consent,"—Mr. Webster, the glorious and great Secreta. ry,” bas managed to commit the.“ great Whig party” against any Southern man! And this is done by the “giant” who devoutly prayed, a few months ago, simply for admission into the party, that he might be an humble worker for Mr. Clay ! E Mr. Clay’s nomination was defeated in 1839 by Mr. ‘Webster, and we are pecercngy a joiced to believe that the same means will be employed to produce a similar result in 1544, The Intelligencer will stand by Mr. Webster, though not by the administration—notwith- atunding Mr. Webster is represented by it at all the fo- reign courts, ut the expense of the government. jine cheers for Mr. Webster, the Intelligencer, the New York Commercial Advertiser, and the New York American ! We are authorised to say, that Mr. Calhoun accepts the ‘Btate Department, and will be at his post the last of this week. An interval of nine days occurred between the mailing, at this place, of the letfer announcing to him his ‘appointment officially, and its receipt. We take pleasure in saying, that his acceptance was equally prompt with the tender. ington. [Correepondence of the Herald.} Wasiinaton, 25th March, 1844. Every thing is very quiet now at Washington. ‘The Texas excitement is at present on the decline, although we know not in what new form it may again appear. In one respect, both parties are op- posed to the present agitation of the subject—so far as President Tyier is concerned—tor the reason that he intends to make political capital by having the matter settled under his administration. 1 now understand from good authority, that Mr. Calhoun isexpected to arrive here on Wednesday next. Reports about his movements are go ex- tremely contradictory, that it is very difficult to tell what to believe. Since writing the above, I have seen a letter from Mr. Calhoun himself to Mr. — of the South Carolina delegation, in which he states that he shall leave home on the 21th or 26th at farthest, and come through to Washington with as little de- Jay as possible. 1 suppose it willtake him about five days to come through, in which case he will arrive here on Friday or Saturday next. On this you may rely. Slamm, of the firm of Slamm, Bang & Co., is here blowing up James Gordon Bennett sky high, for the course which he alleges the Herald takes against the democratic party. He has come on to Bs de the affairs of the universal locofoco party. here is quite a flock of Wall street sprigs here awaiting Calhoun’s arrival. Among the most prominent are Ii. B. Hart, J. Frances Hutton, Wall street brokers, or agents for the larger houses. You may remember that these gentlemen have been strong Calhoun men, and have no doubt come here to advise the great statesman what course he ought to take for the good of himself and friends. it he will not take their advice, they will ask his, as to how deeply they may go in Texas bonds and all other operations connected with stocks that de- pend upon the annexation of Texas. ‘These young gentlemen,no doubt, believe that as they once suc- ceeded in convincing his friends here to aid in the establishment of a paper in New York that was to secure his nomination by the Baltimore Convention, they hope to be equally successful in convincing him into a belief that they are men of consequence at home Wasutneton, March 25, 1844 While writing my letter to-day, Mr. Benton un- expectedly closed his speech for to-day, on account of his feeble state of health. He will resume aad Siaish to-morrow. 1 understand to-night that some anodyne has been administered to some of the western mem- bers, which has greatly mitigated their asperity to wards those three “recreant” southerners who voted against their Oregon notice. The report is, that McDuffic has told them that he is opposed to the annexation of Texas, or that he was opposed fo it, and thatif he votes in favor of itnow, it will be in consequence of being so instructed by his legislature. Of these reports I have not the means to-night of ascertaining the truth. At any rate, the annexation stock is rising again. Thus we go up, ‘up, up, and thus we go down, down, downy No one can tell what a day may bring forth. It is whispered about that Texas will positivel present two alternatives to this present Congreve either annexation to the United States or alliance with England = The arrival of Gen Henderson is looked for with deep interest i ae B TWENTY-KIGHTA CONGRESS FIRST SESSION, Senate. | Wasuisotox, March 25 THE NEW TARIVF BILL.
