MONEY MARKET. Tuesday, March 26-6 P. 3. rid ‘Heck hate eae eae oll Saeed tions. Harlem Railroad went up 2) per cent ; Farmers’ Trust 2.do; Mohawk 1} ; Canton Co. }; North American Trust Co. 1; Long Island declined } ; Norwich end Wor- ceatet }; Ohio 6's 4; Pennsylvania 6's 1} ; Mlinois 3; Ken- ‘tucky 6's closed firm at yesterday’s prices. The sales at both boards were very large and a better feeling prevailed in the street. As packet day for the steamship from Boston for Liver- pool approaches, foreign exchange shows some little im- provement. The ruling rates for prime bills ou London are 108.8 108; ; on Parie Of. 313 @ 5f.32}. The demand as yet ts quite limited, amd it is supposed bills of a large amount from the south will be offered in the market be- fore packet day arrives. Our quotations for domestic exchange remain without much alteration, ‘The business doing is very regular and -earried on prineipally by brekers in the street. Domastic Excnanar, Mancy 26:h. i. Sieh BE 2 Foreign exchange at the south is gradually greets in consequence of the recent heavy s:ipments of cotton. In Mobile the falling/off has reached from 1} to 1} per cent. ‘The receipts of specie at Mobile, from the commencement ef the'season tothe 18th inst., amount to nearly two mil- ions of dollars. The Farmers’ Bank of Maryland has declared a halt yearly dividend of three per vent. The Supreme Court of Massachusetts haye decided against the claim of the Hamilton Bank of Boston, onthe Phanix Bank, of Charlestown, under its attachment, and | , removed a temporary injunction upon the receivers. This Femoves oné obstruction to a settlement of the Phonix ink affairs. The New Orleans papers say, that Texas notes are brisk and improving. They further say, “ There appears to be an impression on the public mind that a treaty is on foot with Mexico for the cession of her claims on Texas, to which impression the prolonged stay of eur minister ‘and the return of the corvette which was to have brought him home; gives some color. The despatches too that have been recently forwarded to him from Pensacola, in- dicate that something of importance is on the tapis. Texas notes were negociated at 10 to 10}¢., and large holders refused to sell more at these prices. Some few bonds were sold at 13 ¢. They are scarcer than qa, and could not be bought in quantity under 14 a 14} ¢.” ‘The great abundance of capital laying idle in all parts of the world, will eentinue to unsettle trade until it can find permanent’ investment. . Eveny staple article will be subjected, to speculation, and to a certain extent they will be used by spechiators to get up prices. We see in all parts of Europe a disposition to speculate in coffee and sugars. These accounts have produced a similar feeling here, and it would ‘not require much urging to get up an excitement regarding either of these staple articles, while money remains so cheap, and is so easily obtained. Up- wards of 90,000 bags of coffee changed hands in Hamburg in about two weeks, at an advance of 2s. to 3s. per cwt. Six cargoes of St, Domingo and Brazil, and large amounts of other descriptions, sold in London, within a short pe- riod, at en advance of 4s. to 6s. per cwt. ‘The Netherlands Trading Company at Rotterdam, gave notice that public sales of their coffee wonld come off on the 7th and 11th of March. The first day they would offer 185,000 bags, and the second 433,000 bags. In consequence of the recent movement in prices, it was supposed the whole stock of- fered would be taken off at an advance on previous prices. Movements somewhat similar to these will probably spring up very often, but like those made in cetton, they must gradually subside into the regular channel. Specu- lative p ices may for utime be sus:ained, but the excite: meat hecoming reduced, it will naturally follow that Prices will become ‘reduced also. The prime movers in getting up ‘any speculative feeling, invariably get out in time to save themselves, at the expense of those induced to take hold of the movement in the last stages of its exist- ence. Meetings lrave lately been held in different parts of the country, to adopt measures'to prevent, if possible, any al terations in thé present tariff laws. The largest was holden im Philadelphia on Monday the 25th inst., which was called by the manufacturers of that district. It was de- cided, on the spot, that the present act regulating dutiés ‘was porfect in all its features—that is, in the mindsof a Majority of those present. It was, in fact, a political mecting in every particular, By a statement just published of the affairs of the Banque da Peuple-(Montreal) to the first of March, 1844, we find that its notes in circulation amaunt to £64,786 ; bullion and coin on hand to £24,086 ; notes discounted, securities and obligations, to £229,520 1s. 1d. ; total lia- bilities, to £116,227 7s. 8d. ; total assets, to £265,450-38, ad. The Tariff of Tolla on the Canals of this State have been fixed by'the Commissioners for 1644. They do not vary materially from those current last year. The im. mense quantity of produce that has, since the closing of navigation, been stored at the different depots clong the line of the Cunal; will be immediately forwarded and fill up the revenue from tolls very rapidly. The stidden de- cline ix prices at the close of the last Fail compelled the producers to hold on to their produce instead of forward- img it to market. Most of thia will reach market soon. after the opening of the Canal, and present prices’ will yield the farmer a better return for his labor. If the tulls op our Canals for 1844 exceed those of 1943 as much as those of 1843 did those of 1842, the State will be able to meet the payments on the heavy debt without abatement and without resorting to any other tax. The tolls from the several Canals lest year were as follows :— Erie Canal, $1,990,409 67 ; Champlain, $102,308 50; Os- wezo, $36,203 93 ; Cayuga and Seneca, $19,417 38; Che- 56; Crooked Lake, $1,328 18 ; Chenango, $16,:94 75 ; Genesee Villey, $15,291 78; Oneida Lake, $607 74; Seneca River Towing Path, $296 90, Total, $2,081,586 29. showing an increase of $332,381 22 over the receipts of 1942, and exceeding by $46,702 47 those of 18%. ‘The expenditures on the several canals, in 1843, were $989,079 58 ; in 1842, $452,561 96 ; less in 1843, $69,- 428 33. Buenos Avnes, Jan, 27,—The expectation entertained by some that in the latter months of the past year this market would be opened to foreign flour and wheat hes been disappointed. There exists at present a stock of abor out 33,000 bbls. American flour in our deposits, and the holders will probably be obliged to export it to other mar- kets to dispose of it. The whose crop ot this province is reported ts turn out satisfactory, and the new wheat com- ing now to market is welling» ‘at about fio per faneg ivalent to about Sp. $15 per bbl. of flour. ‘The sup- ies of American domestic cottons have been moderate uring the past year, and there ix at present no stock in ands of importers. Of late they have declined again to $50 per peseda of 60 Ibs, The demand for the new clip of wools:has been equal to the supplies, which were bought up as soon as they appeared in the market. Good washed wool of this pro- vince, with very few burs in it, fetched readily 19 to $23 rarroba. The more burry classes sold repprilssably lower, at 15 a $18, and were less sought Common ed woolafound purchasers at 7 to $11; scgonding to quality. Of unwashed Cordova wools there is none for sale in this market, and even the next aupplies are con- tracted for at 13}%a 14 rials silver per arroba. ‘The prices of horse hair have been steady. Washed sheep skins have lately declined from 35 to $30 per dozen, being in but li. mited demand. Nutria skins experienced in the couree of last year a rise of 100 per cent, owing to mare favorable advices from the United States, which, however, (ete means warranted a rive in price to auch an extent. exportation of jerked beef from the river to Havana, amounted last year to 164,723 qnintals in this month; thus far seven vessels, with 24,000 quintals, have gone, and there are, at Present Cas xaneais loading for said port, which will carry about Freights remain continually Ne! and vessels abundant.
