one decided step towards providing for the past or futurs interest on the debt of the State. Several resolutions have been introduced, and referred to committees, relating tothe sale of the State’s interest in the public works. Pro- posals have been made to make stock companies of the canals and railroads, and appropriate the proceeds to the reduction of the debt, Many other movements have been suggested, but nothing has yet been accomplished, and the present prospect is very discouraging for those hold ing the stock of the State. When the Legislature first took hold of the subject, many had great confidence in the spirit manifested, and felt assured, thet before adjourn- ment some plan would be adopted permanently providing for the prompt payment of the interest due and accruing. From the present indications, we cannot resist the com viction that the Legislature of Pennsylvania will adjourn ‘without passing the first act increasing taxation, er ap- propriating funds for the relief of their creditors.
