OUTHE ‘BY THE S RN MAIL. Philadelphia. (Correspondence of the Herald.) Puicapetrma, Noy, 20, 1843. Treasury Note Robbery—Dinner to J. Washington James Gorvon Bennerr, Esq.— Dear Sir— ‘Two persons, named James A. B. Watson and Henry Britton, were arrested on Friday night and Saturday morning, by officers Wm. Young and Russell of this city, and Ridgely of Baltimore, charged with being concerned in the robbery of $90,000 of cancelled Treasury notes, stolen fromthe N. Orleans Collector, Howe, ayearand a half ago. The word ‘ cancelled” was by chemical means re- moved from the face of the notes, and they were afterwards circulated and passed. The prisoners, who are fine looking men, and it is said one of them has been recently living in great style in Baltimore, were placed in custody of Depnty Marshal, Major Thomas O'Neill, who on an order issued by Judge Randall of the United States District Court, was entrusted with their escort to Washington City, from whence, if evidence warrants it, they will be sent to New Orleans. The police are entitled to praise, for the adroitness ob- served in making this arrest, haying been for a long time on the look out. It is thought a clue will ie this means be had to all the cirenm- stances connected with the robbery of the Treasury notes, and a discovery of all engaged in this nefa- rious transaction. f At*Head’s Mansion House, south Third street, on Saturday, a complimentary dinner was given to ex-Commissary General J. ° Washington Tyson, lately appointed Assistant Postmaster General, previous to his departure to take charge of the responsible post for which he has been so judi ciously selected. Hon, Judge Blythe, Collec- tor of the Port, presided, and addresses were made during the afternoon in reply to toasts by Judges Blythe and Campbell, Hon. Joel B. Sutherland, Naval Officer of this Station, Francis J. Grund, Esq}, and other gentlemen. ‘The banquet was got up in Head’s best style and merited the applause of the entire company. Mr. Tyson made anexcellent speech on his health being proposed, and concluded with a marked tribute and toast complimentary to Robert Tyler, Esq. The whole. Saree off well, and must have been gratifying to Mr. Tyson, whove devotion to President Tyler is most ardent and sincere. Yours, &e. Sales of Stocks at Philadelphia. New York. It is thus described : ] saw needles in variou stages of the processes by which they are made from the wire, prepared on the same premises ; und was surprised at the facility afforded by the curious machinery which human ingenuity has invented to lessen manual labor and multiply the results of the numerous operations. “The wire is first cut into lengths, which will make two needles each. The depressions where the eyes are to be made, and where the grooves are to be found in the finished ar- ticle, are stamped in both needles by a single stroke of a machine, with which a single hand can turn off 30,000 in a aa It is then turned over to a boy, who with another machine, punches the eye, and again another separates the two needles, and smooths away any irregularities left or made by the other processes. But the eye of the needle is still rough, and must be bored by another process, which leaves it so smooth as not to cut the thread. After this a man grinds a handful at a time on a common grindstone, holding them in his left hand, and fi ing them a perpetual rotary motion with the right, so that, when the operation is finished, they may be round as well’as sharp. ‘They are now to be case hardened, and finally b hed, all of which is done by simple processes, in h immense numbers can be subjected to the operation at the same time. 0g THE MANAGER OF THE AMERICAN MU- UM has increased his attractions very materially this veek, by engaging the beautiful mechanical figures of nor F in addition to the noted Et n dancer, orator, imitator of the locomotive engine ‘leste and the Misses Shaw and brother ; and last night'a very mate- rial increase was manifested in the number of visitors. Barnum is hard to beat in his line, as the unequalled pros- perity of his establishment clearly shows. Ge PEALE’S MUSEUM SEEMS TO BE WALKING into public favor rapidly, and crowds of the gay and fash- jonable throng its splendid saloon to witness ihe charm- ing performances of the superb company now engaged. Last night they were received with repeated bursts of ap- plause. Great Western was even more felicitous than ever, and Mr. Booth sang with unwonted taste.
