Latest From Onecox.—We have had the plea- sure of conversing with William Sutton, a resident of Oregon Territory, and who left the settlement at Wallamet Falls about the middle of May. He was three months in reaching the settlement on the Missouri, and was the bearer of a petition to the American govern t from the residents of Ore- gon Territory, asking the government to extend the laws and jurisdiction of the republic over that inter- esting territory. Mr. 3. met the caravan of emi- grants on the route, which has before been noticed by us, as also two smaller parties, bound for Ore- gon, He speaks of the settlement as prosperous— nealthy—that the soil, although not equal in fertili- ty to oun, yet Phi ing sure crops of wheat, bar- ley and oats. Emigrants with moderate expecta. tions, industrious, frugal and moral, are likely to do well. No money in circulation, but teatled is by arter—no law for the collection of debts, but debta always paid. A. town is growing up at the falls of Wallamet. Dr. McLaughlin, the British Cea Le er of fort Vancouver, claims the site by nght of discovery, or as I established a post there some years since. H laid out a town, and is now selling lots, giving deeds, &e. He’ warns American citizens not to interfere with his claims. ‘The American settlers are very much perplexed by his interference on the south side of the river. The Wallamet furnishes an immense water power suit- able for machine Two grist and saw mills are by this time built at that place—one owned by Dr. McLaughlin, who, by means of his great wealth, is determined to break down the American owners Cave 133, 134 ae, 183, of the other mills. The settlers are paeat | expect- ing the United States to protect the ri her own citizens in her own territory. ‘Wheat, which ed for sale, is worth about at fort Vancouver. Money will not parchians goods as low by 2% per cent wheat or beaver skins. is the principal erop rai eighty cents per _bushe' Mr. Sutton is so well satisfied with the country, that he designs to return and spend his days there.
