[Correspond-uce of the Herald.) New Orxeans, Nov. 5, 1843. Hubbub among the Catholics—A full history of the Quarrel between the Wurdens of St. Lowis Cathe- drat and Bishop Blunch—Great Meetings of the Laity. The difficulties‘in the Catholic Church, to which Talluded in a previous letter, have taken a more serious turn in the last day ortwo. The resistance made by the wardens of the Church of St. Louis to the power claimed and exercised by the Bishop, of absolute appointment of Curate, has’been condemned and opposed by the whole Irish and German Catholic population. The Irish held an immense meeting last night, at which resolutions asserting the most conservative ecclesiastical principles, and strongly conaemaing the course of the Wardens, were passed amid much uproar and excitement. The meeting wes in every reapect but in its object, a very respectable one. ‘The important principles involved in this dispute will justity my entering more fully into it. It seems that the Church of St. Louis, whose time stained Cathedral stands in the very centre of the city, and is endeared by the f sndest associations to more than a half of our native eciuzens, rests on a differ- ent foundation from any Catholic Church in the country. The property owned by the Corporation of St. Louis, which is immense, was devised to the church by private individuals, and has always been administered by the Wardens of the Church. Ata very early period in its history, when under the pas- toral charge of Pere Antoine, the beloved Cure of the Chureh at its first establishment, the wardens and parishioners, supported by their curate, protest- ed successtully against the claim of the Bishop to rule them ad (rbitum. This spirit ot restlessness, under ecclesiastical power, has ever ‘since characterized this congrega- tion. The late Abbe Morée, by his excellent charac- ter and great discretion, for a Jong ume restrained and smothered this feel'ng But at his death it broke out with increased violence, in opposition fo the Bishop’s nomination of Abbe Moé-’s suc cessor. The Beshop’s obstinacy is in the in verse ratio of his discretion He is a Freach- man by birth, and has no conception «¢ the spirit of our people and institutions, and thought to suppress the 0, position by a show of ec- clrsiastcal power. Sohe denouuced the wardens, excommunicated them, and deciured that if they did not take a priest of his nomination, they might shut up their church and go without one. Now this Le have succeeded with Spaniards, Tralians or Irish, but with the descendants of the French tevolutionists and native Americana, it had quite a different eff-ct. They took the priest at bis own word, shut up the church, and thereby shut off the supplies from the priest and his clerical col- leagues. Inan appeal to the people, the wardens were supported by three to one of the parishioners. The priest soon began to open bis eyes, and slack~ ened the reins of authority. A compromise wus effecied by the withdrawal of the Bishoy’s nominee and the appointment of a curate, wiih whom the Wardens were satisfied, and thus the strife seemed pena settled and adjusted. But alas! Abbe Bacn feli a victim to the yellow fever. In filling his vacancy the old quirrel broke out afresh. The Wardens now set forth their grounds of opposition more distinctly and definitely. They claim a right of veto, or of confirmation or rejection of the Bishop’s nomination, They insist that such a power is necessary to protect them {from priests and curates, whe may be disagreeable to them, as unfit, as strangersand foreigners, enemies to our in- stitutions, or as men of immoral character; and they only claim the power iu such cases. In this stand the wardens have been supported by the whole Creoie population. At avery large meeting atthe St. Louis Exchange, the opinions and views of the wardens were embodied in a series of bold and determined resolutions, sustaining the course of the wardens, and condemning the Bishop in the strongest terms. Aod lust night the Bish- op’s_ party, composed chiefly of Irish and Germans, anathemanzed the Wardens, and asserted the Bishop’s unqualified and absolure power of appointing all the gpiriwwal officers of the Church. ‘Lhe Paddies were very violent, and danined the French and Creoles in the most Ca- tholic style. Inthe mean time tne disputauts have not kept out of the Courts or the newspapers. The wardens had the point carried betore the Supreme Court, which decided in their favor, that they were the appointing power of the Church The Bishop hurls back an old bull of Pope Leo Xi, which you will see in the Courier of Nov 3, and in which, alter much abuse of the wardens for theie resistance on a similar occasion, and begging them to return to their duty, he makes’ the following brieht sugges tion:—** And should they not, which God forbid, submit to our decision, we feel perevaded that the wise legislators of the Republic, whose duty and in- tention it is to support the Catholic worship, will nor ield to the demand of the wardens ot New Or leans.” So the matter now stands. What will be the sequel of it Lcannottell. I think, towever, the waren, backed by the civil power, ‘and by the s- news of war, whether ecclesiastical, political. civil or physical, will triumph, and coavince the Right Rev. Antonio Bianch that he has chosen the wrong field for the display of .ishierarchical powers Iam myseli personally indifferent and neutral in the con- test, as much go as the woman was in the fight be- ween her husband and the bear. B. Whipp: Esq. The Tabernacle was tolerably well filled at the appointed hour. The Rev. Mr. Choules, the Presi- dent of the Lyceum, introduced the exercises with some remarks upon the number of members of the Lyceum, books ‘in the Library, the cause of Lec- tures, &c. He vaid that Mr. Biddle, of Andalusia, would, undoubtedly, deliver a Lecture during the course, as his liealth was improving—although it might not be uatil towards the close of the course. The late Mr. Legare, when inthis city, hed promi- sed to deliver two Lectures upon Italian Literature, but he had been taken away by death. There would be two or three debates during the course.— For himself, Mr. Choules said he appeared here this evening for the iret and last time as President of this Institution, He tendered bis resignation both as Director and President of the Lyeeum—being called to labor in another part of the country Next Wednesday evening, Dr. Becon, of New Haven, would deliver a Lecture upon the Life and Times of Wentworth, Earl of © trefford. The Lecture last evening was by the Hon. A. Bryn Hasbrouck, L. L. D., President of Rutgers’ Coliwge, N. J., upon the sanction and extent of pub- lie opinion as arule of conduct. The lecture was one of those deeply abstract, and purely literary productions, which make but little impression upon the popular mind, and ef which iti imposeible to give a report, unless you whole lecture ia the identical words of the author. It lecturers wish to be brie fly reported, they should occasionally come down from lotty abstract to hum- ble concrete, and say something which the audience can carry away with them without pen an‘ iok. Alter the lecture, E. P. Whipple, Eeq , delivered a poem upon the subject of Deception. Ar. Why ple isan entire stranger among us, it being his firet visit to our city. He isa very young man, aud per- haps has acquired a wider reputation than any other author has cone at hisage. He was slightly embarrassed at the com- mencement of his poem, but quickly recovered. He spoke without any reference to notes, 80 per- fectly had he committed his task to memory. It was a highly commendable effort, considering the youth of the author. He thivks clearly, and writes forcibly, although in river yeurs his poetry will be- come more chastened, and his delivery more mel- low and grecciul. Professor Bronson’s Lecture last Evening at the Apollo. Professor Bronson deiiveced the first regular l-o- ture of his course last evening at the Apollo,to a large and highly intelligent audience of ladies and gent.e- men. The exercises of the evening were commenced by Mr. F. H. Nash, accompanied upon the piano by Mr. Samuel Bassford, in ringing Mr. Russell’seong, “Rockaway.” Professor Bronson’s'lecture was upon man—an abstract of crealion—a knowledge of him; a key toall other eciences; scsle ot being; extent and importance of the subject; the three degrees of existence; we exist in two worlds; natural and mental ; every thiog exists by a three fold principle, essence, form, and use; in man, will, understand- ing, act—or attecuon, reason, sveech—or feelings, thoughis, words. It is an axicm that all things ex- ist iu accordance with fixed principles, or lawe of order. It said laws are kept, good tollows—if not, evil. Wecan neither think nor act without obey- ing or disobeying those laws. Here is the founda- ton of mental acd ioral philosophy, of health and disease, of lite and death. The right and the seg way of breathing, reading, speaking, singing aa acting Illustrauons with the Maunikio, and by HU nerous recitations, together with suucry sougs by Mr. Nash ‘The whole lecture was highly interesting, profit- able and practical, and weil calculated to do ser- vice to the public.
