Lregret to announce the loss of another of our beautiful packet steamboats. The Luda, a light, elegant and costly boat, commanded, and chiefly owned by Captain Clark, and plying between New Orleans and Bayou Sarah was run into by the De Soto, near Bayou Goula, and in filteen minutes after the collision, sunk to the bottons, a total logs. Three hands of the Luda are missing. Tne De Soto was very badly battered, and lost one hundred and fifty balesof cotton thrown off the guard by the shock. The Luda had just taken the place of the ill-fated Clipper. Tn neither of these cases wag there any in- surance, and the loss falls very heavily upon the Captains, whose hard earnings had been invested in their boats, ‘The Captain of the Clipper was the oldest Captain on the river, aad had accumulated a pretty fortune, which was entirely wrecked in the destruction of his valuable bout. The insurance companies have suflered so much by steamboat disasters, that they have determined to insure no more. Most of these accidentsare atiributsble to carelessness, in- temperance of the officers, an impetuous rivalry, reckless racing, &c. Some of them grow out of natural and unavoidable causes, such as snags, bad navigation, and conflicts in misis. But no mau can travel in these boats without be- ing struck with the cool indifference, and incautious negligence of their commanders and officers. They seem to regard nothing but the inerease of their freight and paesengers, the celerity of their passage, and successful competition with rival boats. Soy on, rushes the boat over huge logs, lesping sod banks, bumping forcibly against the 8, whilst the captain 1s enjoying his wine in the state room, the mate is asleep, the engineer nodding at his post, and the pilot cracking his jokes with two or three companions inthe wheel house, A boat wears and becomes old in so short a time in navigating the Mississippi, that the only object of the owner seems to be to make es much as possible out of her in the short time before she becomes un- sound. In five or #x years a boat is pronounced old, and is either refitted, sold and cut down tor @ tow boat, or otherwise disposed of, The steamboats of the Miesi ppi are, you ere aware, sui generis entirely diflerent from the boats which ply upon the Northera streams. They are built like huge barges, the vessel beipg entirely sunk in the water—o that you step aboard,as on ascow, without ascending a ladder. The cabio, running nearly trom stem to stern, is elevated fur above the level ef the water, and between it and the low deck are the boilera and mechinery. This arrange- ment is highly favorable to comfort, elegance and pleasure. There is abundant room—no annoy- ance from the noise or smell ot the en. gine, and an entire seperation from the bustle aud confusion of working the boat. lostead of being divided into two separate apartments, with impassable barriers, for the gentlemen and ladies, parcelled off like sheep andgouts in Scripture, there 1g an elegant ladies’ parlor, and state roome,in which husbands and wives so far from being even tempora- rily divorced, may live as sweetly and cosily to- gether as at their own comtortable homes. The bachelors too, are not all thrown together pell mell, but caa select their room and their bed and theit companion to suit themselves, and have some little privacy. And then too the fare’? What can equal that in variety, richness, and plenty? Tregret to say that there has been a fall im the price of cotton since Monday, when the English news gave it a vey’ favorable impetus. I do not know the cause. Thisis one of the long list of ba ke in this city once deemed very staunch and sound, and whose weakness was first developed by the ef- fort made a year ago to resume Specie payments.— [t signally failed, and has ever since sustained an indifferent character. Tc is now well known that one of its officers, who 18 connected with a large aad influential Creole fan ily, has disappeared, and a large deficit has been discovered in his accounts. The exact amountis not yet determined, but you may set it down at no very smali sum. He will take a trip to Paris, spend tae wiutes in that gay city, visit London, and return to New Orleans, and retain Pierre Soule by a fee of $500 to quash any indictment which may be foundeg.inst him. And thus he will, after a short eclipse, emerge from the eloud which eurrouncs him, and regain his position in society. Such is the procees the fellow who robbed the Ci- tizens’ Bank of $60,000 is now undergoing. Either of these gentlemen would call you or any other ho- nest man out to the “fie. Id of honor” if you were to tread on his toes or say ** boo” to him. The cre- oles are generally a very henest and honorable class of men, but they have one great fault ; they will protect their own thieving relations. Old Ca: oonge, the judge ot the crimioal court, whose grea’ est luxury isto sead poor starving dogs tothe pen tentiary tor stealing a pair of shoes or loaf of bread, woud 8 soon cut off his right armas condemn a Creole to an infamous punishment. Our law courts open to day, Lam rejoiced to hear with very light dockets; for as justice is administer. ed here, the less we have ot it the better. This is the opinion of ahe whole people. The jadigiary of this State is very inferior, owing to the smailness ot he salaries, compared with the average profita ot he lawyers.
