ASSASSINATION —Last evening, about 6 o'clock, Mr. Wm. Some slight quarrel having taken. ppoes Old- ham stabbed Mr. Benham twice with a powie knife, oace in the arm near the shoulder, severing @ jarge artery, and opce in the back. Mr. B. died about midnight. We do not wish at present to de- tail all the circumstances of the occurrence, but ‘if they have been truly detailed to us by eye witaess- es, the act was as atrocious a murder as ever was perpetrated. Mr. B. was entirely unarmed. The assassin, who even before this act had an infamous notoriety here, immediately mounted a horse and fled from the city. The sheriff subsequently went im pursuit, but we have not learned whether he sue- ceeded in catching him.—Loutswille Journal of Tuesday. Tue Deatu oF Brit Jonson —The lowa Report- er gives this account of the cireumstances connee- ted with the death of thisindividual:—The Queen, his daughter, in violation of the rules of royel eti quette, contracted a matrimonial alliance with the gon of a peasant, und taking advantage of the he- ro’e absence, the knot was tied and the marriage consummated. At this very interesting period W1l- Jian made his appearance, armed and equipped for bloody strife, and with his usual violence and promp- titude, made the Queen arise and accompany him to the’ paternal cabin, at the same time holding the bridegroom in painful! distress, by means of a cock- ed pistol, which had gained a ‘frightiul proximity to hisperson.
