Emigration to the West—The Lake Steamboats— Improvemenis of Buffaio— Marshal Bertrand, §c. Dear Sir :— After e de‘ightful interval of about thirty-six hours fine weather, we have again another severe wind and rain storm. The snow which fell last Tuesday and Wednesday to the{depth of five inches, disappeared in a few hours ; and the gale abating al- lowed the Indiana and Constitution, (two of the finest boats on these lakes) to leave the port, with five other large steamboats, all literally covered with passengers going to Michigan and Wisconrin. Those two boats had at least 1000 souls on board ; and in all, over 2000 persons left Buffalo for the far weston Thursday. Besides these, there was an im- mepse numper of horses, cattle, wagons of ali kinds, ploughs, and tarming implements of every descrip- tion Yesterday (Friday) that superb boat the Tili- nois, commanded by one of the best sailors in the world, although a terrible rough old sea dog, (Capt. Blake) left for Chicago with about 60Q souls on board. Two other very fine boats, the Buffalo, Capt. Allen, and the De Witt Clinton, Capt Squiers, took out at least 800 or 1000 people _to various paris of Wisconsin and Michigan ; the Fulton and Con- stellation also left for the west, loaded down with passengers. In addition to this, we met a large ship going out of the harbor for Chicago as we came ip, and this had 320 passengers, with 35 horses, and an enormous freight of farming implements, household furniture, &c. belonging to emigrants, most of whom were from the Eastern States. The large propeller, Porter, which was injured in the late gale, has been repaired, and is now full of emigrants, ready to start tor Wisconsin. In short, the throng of people met with here and on the lakes go ing to Wisconsin and Michigan is absolutely incredable. I have expended two months in the northwestern country, and | have met at Cleveland, Detroit, Mackinaw, Sault S. Marie, Green Bay, La Pointe, Racine, Grand River, Mit waukie and Chicago, with at least 15,000 emigrants, going to settle in Wisconsin, principally. A large proportion of these were young, hearty, good-look- ing and respectable women. A majority were farm- ers; and I declare solemnly that I did not see an idle, poor, or dissipated looking person amongst them. They ali looked hardy, strong, and enter- prising ; most of them were under thirty-five years of age, and all seemed to be looking anxiously for a settlement in the Far West, as the children of Israel looked toward the promised land. From cal- culations made for me by Captain Walker, of the Great Western, and his obliging factotum, Mr Pearce, Mr. Dibble of Detroit, the Mayor of Chica go, and other kind friends at Milwaukie, it is cer- tain that from 50,000 to 60,000 emigrants, at the least, have gone to Wisconsin this year; many estimate the number much higher, but this statement is as nearly correct as it is possible to get it. In the early part of the secson the large steamboats run every day for Chicago, from Buffalo, and even now they run every other day, and are always loaded down; they have carried 30,000 passengers this sea- son, and the propellers and sailing vessels have car- ried as many more. When I went up in August on the Great Western, (which at present is decidedly the finest and most comfortable boat on the Upper Lakes, and resembling those excellent boats the Troy, Empire, and Kuickerbecker, in the perfec- tion of its arrangements) we had at least 700 souls on board, beside a quanuty of freight equal to or 400 tons; ] never saw anything equal to itin my lite; the crowds { hear of that crossed to see the Bul- faio Hunt could not begin with our melée. And “the ery is etill they come,” of rather they go; every boarding house in the place is now full of em- igrants; most of the hotels are full; {am oral. for a day or two at a very fine house, the Western Hotel, kept by Mr. Smith, which is nearly as large, and equal to Howard’s excellent hotel in style and comfort; it dines and lodges 300 persons, and is full of the first class company all the time, going and coming Gen. Reed, the newly elected mem- ber to Congress from Erie, &c. Pennsylvania, is here in high spirits. Most of the hotels are erowd- ed; aud this will be the case, Lam told, until the of door 500 is pret 1e5, € packed im the supply of the 010 2w*m In older That Aifict Pray And wi But N ie th But not ALonr, From Fi And eac! Dr. Houghton, the eminent and learned State Geologist of Michigan, assured me that at least 12,000 persons had emigrated to that State this season, many from the Eastern States, and settied down in fine Jand in various parts of the Western counties. . an Buffalo has been wonderfully improved withio the ast two years; it has quite recovered from the terrible snocks it received in 1837-8 and 9; and is now doiig @ large, healthy, and legitimate busi- ness. All the lower part of Main street, (one of the finest streets in the Union, and only excelled in beauty by Broadway, for in sityation, width, &c. it is tar superior to Chesnut street) has been filled up, and down both sides they have érected and are erecting very substantial and handsome blocks of four story stores, and all will be occupied by sound and enterprising men as soon as finished. The canal has been cleaned out, widened, deepened, and extended through several important sections of the city, the sidewalks repaired, the splendid sea wall strengthened and lengthened, a new pier is being constructed, and if the corporation or citizens will set to work and widen the creek, Buffalo will be fairly entitled to the proud title of the Queen of the West.. In point of locality, marine and commer- cial advantages, she is far superior to Cincinnati, or any other city west of New York, save St. Louis The sidewalks around the wharves and docks, though, I must say, want repairing most wofully. _ The hull for the iron cutter building for the Uni- ted States Topographical corps here, isnearly com- pleted; I was in the yard yesterday, and saw that there was only the centre rew of iron plates to put on the sides. She is a most beautiful model. Two new steamboats, each as long or longer than the United States line of battle ship Pennsylvania, will be put on these lakes next spring; one 230 feet, the other 240 feet long; tobe called the Nile and Wis- consin. There are now 42 large and splendid Reuss sana on these lakes, and eight large steam ropellers. 7 I aliniaed a most pléasing scene yesterday. The venerable Marshal Bertrand left here at 2 P. M., in the care for the East. J told you in my last that he came in to Buffalo on Wednesday night in « storm, on the Robert Fulton. It was indeed a storm probably as terrific as that which shook St Helena at the time the soul of Napoleon left thisearth ; the ood and great old soldier went to the Fails on horsday, where he remained but two or three hours; and returned to this eity Yesterday morning he was invited by the officers of the garrison to review that portion of the 2d regiment U. 8. 1., stationed here. He reviewed them, and the military sperit of the hero of Austerlitz, Friedland, Lutzen, and Leip- sic, seemed to mantle anew in the old man’s cheeks; the troops were in a high state of discipline, and the Marshal appropriately complimented them; but when the band paesed before him playing the Mar- seilles hymn, the tears stood in the veteran’s ey and coursed each other down his war-worn chee! He turned his head and left the ground unable to control his feelings. On his way to the depot, he was escorted nominally by the fine German Volun- teer Company of this place ; but a great number of carriages accompanied the Marshal’s; and at the Depot, there must have been over 1500 persons as- sembled, of whom a majority consisted of the most beautiful women of the place, all crowding around the cars, anxious to get a sightof the veteran that stood by Napoleon in his dying hour. The old Marshal was much affected, and when the cars started, the waving of handkerchiefs, vivas and huzzas, were le- gion; and many there were did cry, “ God bless him!” It wasin sober earnestness an imposing—an affecting scene ; and rushing through the country in the hurry that I am compelled to use, | will not in- sult good sense by attempting to describe it. What has come over the spirit of the Post Office? The Heralds of Thursday reached here this mora- ing by Express ; so have the Boston papers with tae arrival of the Hibernia. The New York afternoon editions of Thursday’s papers are here ; but the latest Courier & Enquirer and Journal of Commerce that we have received through the Post Office are those of Monday last. T., Sept.s17, 1848 Ivrerro! (loway,)§F Rin Iwas sadly vexed to perceive by his letter that your correspondent from Burlington, |. T , con- siders himself west ; he west—faugh, he don’t begin to be! I flatter myself that out here Iam a heap nearer sun-down. He writes of ladies with alabas- trian skin, carnation searcely suffusing the cheek * I shall tell you of damsels where the pure unadul- terated red paints not the cheek only, but the ankles aswell. He describes silk and lace toggery: Ishall depict aboriginal loveliness that demands no orn ment beyond a blanket and ear bobs; and whilst he on the banks of the Mississippi delights his eyes with witching smiles, I shall content myself with gazing on dimples filled with vermillon, Your cor- respondents mostly portray the rules and arts and hypocrisy of maidens taught and drilled by the adepts of artificial society: my muse shall chaunt in prose of unsophisticated daughters of the wilder- ness, who, scorning the fetters ot civilization, sit and view a gentleman pare his toe nails without a blush. Tnterro! [ doubt whether you, or most of your readers, ever read or heard a genuine unvar- nished deseription of our Indians Your novel ma- ker’s Indians are no more like them than was the world when, without form and void, with darkness dwelling upon the face of the waters, to the same world when glorious Eve moved amid the wood- bines of paradise. According to the most orthodox writers, the he Indians (whom we westerners term “ bucks”) are devoted to war or melancholy, eter- nally blowirg out their own or somebody else’s brains—never cracking the fraction of a smile— ceaselessly pondering over the graves of their fore- fathers—being more like ghosts of departed stoics than human beings: whereas the truth of the matter is they are all just as fond of fun as most of us Inchero, as the loways name white men. As for the young men, our romance authors deccribe them as so many lunatics, under the influence of Mars or Venus, either replete with military ambr- tion or suused head over ears in love, conversing harsh music on crude flutes beside the brink of some moonlit stream. As for the squaws, an author can- not get hold ot afemale red skin, but she must doff the blanket and assume wings instead, and at once her ‘‘corruption puts on incorruptability.” The poor squaws, unbeknown to themselves, are either rushing to preserve the endangered life of seme ill- fated white skin, or else are dying heroically on the graves of their departed husbands, or if unmarried, make themselves fish bait for true love. This is well—all very well for book fabricators, as most people are predetermined to believe that the savage is as he has almost uniformly beea described, but [ do assure you it is alla humbug. An author whose n serves for a harvest of daily bread, must cater for the popular taste ; but 1, independent as the Herald itsel!, shall depict ihe red man as he is— deeply regretting that my delineations may not cor- respond with the preconceived notions of some of your readers, who no doubt will be disposed to rebut my assertion that the “bucks” are not a race of taciturn heroes and patriots, nor the red fair sex the most perfect pinks of female virtue or heroism. Fif- teen years ago I thought of the Indians as most of my fellow citizens of New York, I presume, do now. But most of that period having been compelled to reside among them, it will be judged from my future epistles how much my awe and admiration have di- minished. Ido not deny, as with our race, there are individual instances of daring, gratitude, or other virtues, which have been remarked—but the very fact of their having been noticed, evinces such acts are not peculiar to them as a people. 1 shall terminate this paper by observing that a fifteen years intimate acquaintance with red men have convinced me that they possess but three national characteristics, to wit: profuse generosity among themselves—an insatiable disposition to beg from the pale faces—and an pes ig aad thirst for the alcoholic (which is, in the loway, pay-nee). Ar-greck-kay (adieu), Zine. Last or THE Jersey Link Gonk.—The last of the cocked hats is gove! Inthe death of Gen, Ebe- nezer Elmer, we mourn the loss of the last officer of the old Jersey line. There remains to us nota solitary member of that heroic band. General Elmer was the President, and the last original member of the New Jersey Cincinnati Society. He died at hisresidence in Bridgeton, Cumberland county, on Wednesday last, the 18th inst., at the advanced age of 91 years We derive the follow- ing brief memoir of his life and services from the Bridgeton Chronicle: General Elmer was born at edarville, Cumberland county, N J. He studied medicine, and was about establishing himself in practice, when hostilities commenced between America and Great Britatn. InjJanuary, 1776, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the company of continental trooys, commanded by the late Bloomfield, and served in that capacity, and asa Lieutenant in the northern army, unul the spring of 1777, when the army being re-organized, he was appointed a Surgeon’s mate In June, 1778, he was appointed Surgeon [of the 2d “seve Regi- ment, and served in that capacity until the close of the war, never being absent from duty. Durin; the last war with England, in 1813, he commande the troops stationed at Billingsport, in this State. General Elmer was the father of Mr. L. Q. C. El- mer, member of Congress elect for the first Con- gressional Distric’ Important Decisto: he decision of Judge Ca- nonge on Friday last, in the case of the free peop!e ot color, whom he discharged from custody on the ground of illegal imprisonment under the law of 1842, is highly important, and will attract general attention That law prohibits free persons of color i ; Subsequently, in 1843, 2 law was ng the municipal authorities and lice juries, to grant permission (if they should think fit) tw such free persons of color as might ap- ply to them to remain in the State. The Judge de- cided in this case, that the parties having obtained such permission, have a right to go and come when and where they please, and that they do not come under the cognizance of the law of 142 This isa novel decision, and whilst we do not doubt, in the least, that the judge acted conscientiously, we may be allowed to say, that in our opinion, he did not decide according to the intention of the legislature, which evidently passed this bill for the express par- pose of preventing all intercommunication between our servile population and the colored population of other States. This decision renders the Jaw in that respect adead letter; and itnow remains forthe Le- gislature, at their next session, so to amend and ex- plain the law, that their intent and meaning cannot be doubted.—N.
