sadn abel J \ Sreaner P; —There living in Har- rison county, says the Free Press, a married laay, preaches a sermon at her resi deace every other Sabbath day. When the preach- ing paroxysm comes on her, she praye, reads a text ot Seripture without the book, exploing it in rather a sensible and eloquent manner, the dis- course frequent occupying from two to two anu a halfhours. While the paroxysm is on, she is wholly imseasible to all surrounding ets, bat readily re- fers to subjects discussed by her 1n previous dis- courses. She has preached, as we urderstand, nearly one hundred sermons, periodically—that is, one every two weeks, commencing each about the same hour of the day. So soon as her sermon is finished, the natural exercise of her faculties seems to Le restored, she resumes her ordinary domestic duties, and is entirely unconscious of any thing she may have said or done during the delivery of the discourse. In fact she does aot know that she preaches at all, except while she is engaged in her discourse. Loox ovr ror Counrerrerts.—On Thursday night two men stopped at the Hotel of D. Allen, of Stephenton, in this county. On leaving in the morning they presented a $10 nof on the Hudson River Bank at Hudson, receiving $9 in change. ‘The note was afterwards discovered to be a coun- terfeit, and chase was given to the persons who pees it. They were on foot, and came yery near ‘ing captured, but made their escape in the woods and so got clear. While running, one of them a package of counterfeit threes on the Bank of Orange co , Vermont, and the Brunswick Bank, Maine, to the amount of $165 ; also seyeral notes of the Hudson River Bank ; amounting in all to about $200. One of the rogues was an Irishman, about 30 years of age, middling size, light com- plexion, sandy hair and whiskers; dressed in a drab roundabout and trowsers, straw hat, laced brogans The other was a 70ung man about twenty years of age, tolerably well dressed in a dark coat, light pantaloons, cap and brogans.— Troy Whig. Lost in THE Woops —The Kingston Chronicle of the 23d gives a long and quite interesting account of a child-hunt, which took place early in the month in Canfiden township, Canada West. The child, a lite gurl six years old, was left at the house ef her uncle while her mother, a widow, went to work at another concession about eight miles distant. Pining for her mother, the little creature set off alone through the woods to join her, and soon lost her way. When missed, her cousins, two lads, set off in search, uatil finally more than a hundred were beating the woods day and night in the hope of find- ing her. To make a long story short, the child was not found until the filth day, deep in the woods, where she had wandered, barefooted and thinly clad, but not unseen or uaprotected by the Father of the fatherless, She was feeble, but still able to walk, and much less exhausted than might have been supposed, having sustained herselt by eating wild plums and goozeberries. Wages or Skamstresses.—It is said that one cause of the low prices paid to females for sewing is, that there are a great many who live at home with their parents, and having neither board nor rent to pay, are willing to work for sufficient to clothe themselves. The United Benevolent Asso- ciation of Ladies will hold another meeting in Washingtonian Halli, Court street, to-morrow atter noon. We understand that some of our dealers in clothing have sent as far as Montreal for journey men tailors to supp!y'the places of thore who hold out on the strike. Uniren Stares Bric Apprentice —For a few days during the past week, a small vessel of about seventy tons, rigged, armed and equipped in every respect like aman of war, has been laying in the river opposite our village. She is brig rigged, and is called the Apprentice; and asthe name indicates, was built as a sort of nursery for the juvenile seamen who are destined to mar the navy of the United States in future years. She was commanded by Lieutenant Moore and had on board about thirty boys. The brig was built at the Charlestown Navy Yard a few years since, and as we understand she has been very serviceable in training boys of war into men of wer.— Gardiner, Me. Ledger, Sept. 29. Horrinus.—We learn that while the caravan was on exhibition at Norridgewock, a little boy ap proached too near the lion’s cage and wasinstantly seized by the lion, who tore off one of his arms and & part of his abdomen, causing immediate death.— Bangor Whig, Sept. 30.
