Mr. Bennert— Dear Sir s— The individual alluded to by Peleg Jones, some time since, as having “sloped to the uninhabitable world” to evade a duel, is no less than J. L. T., a young man who has figured here most extensively in all transactions of Jife (low life in particular) but not so as to become suspected, until the well known affair of honor sprang up, and numerous little re- sponsibilities, such as board bills, herse hire, bor- rowed money, &c. were actually refused payment, and the threats, kicks and dunsof creditors becom- ing aggravated and alarming to the gentleman, he (as might be supposed) actually took leg bail, and after arriving in Charleston, to carry out the farce of financial operations, he sponged about there a while and negociated adraft of C Ff’. Taylor & Son, representing himself as a partner of his father, (which is not the case) and thereby received $250 tn a decided swindling operation, But enough of this. The whigs and democrats here are moving hea- venand earth and a part of Texas to elect their candidates—which party will succeed is hard to tell. Meetings are held nightly, and the most animated, spirited and patriotic speeches delivered, advoca+ ting the great principles and humbuggery of both parties. It is quite generally believed that George W. Crawford will be elected Governor, and again strenuously supposed that little Bill Cooper will be the hero of the day. Candidates of all parties out to be elected—they are so deserving. The fire department prepare and march n praces- sion to receive a splendid new engine from the north this evening—a beautiful and costly machine, for the Clinch Company No 2, the most spirited as- sociation of firemen in these parts; in fact they de- fy the raging elements. To close my letter briefly, T inform you of the mysterious disappearance of Mr. B , who has resided aud kept a store here; a man of family, a voluptuous wife and pretty children, ‘The cause of this sudden absence is this—net long sinee, a Mr. D—, a very intimate friend of beth parties, who visted the family often, passed out ot the store one ning in haste, a_scream of murder alarmed the neighbors, and Mr. B. pursuing him in hot haste as the offender, supposed with the intention to kill him, for what purpose may be conjectured, if not proved, and with sorrow, as both the husband and wife belong to and are active members of the Ne. thodist Church | More in my next. Yours, in haste—A {act, Peuea Jongs. A Youxa Woman ano Stx Cuinpren Lost ror TwoDays axp Two Nicwrs iv THE Woops In Ciear- rretD County, Pa,—Oa Wednesday the 18th ult., a Miss Rebecca Ginter, a young woman living at or near the forks of the Phillipsburgh and Birming- ham road, in Clearfield county, Pas accompanied by six children, of from 12 to 4 years of age, went out into the woods to gather berries. The day being cloudy, they soon got bewildered and lost, and at once commenced a fruitless attempt to find their way out. All shat day (Wednesday) they rambled abont, but night closed on them, and still they were in the woodsand unprotected On Thursday morn- ing they again commenced their wanderings. It was an exceedingly cold , wet, gloomy day, a8 ma- ny of our readers willrecollee 3 Taining from morn- ing to night. ‘To this inclement weather they were exposed the whole of that day, and throughout the night following, with but their summer clothing for protection. On this day their suffering must have been great ; for they were wearied by Wednesday’s exertions, shivering with wet and cold. and almost exhausted with hunger, yet they kept on in their fruitless attempts to find a way out. But night agaia closed on them—and a_most chilling, tryin night it must have been. Exposed to the cold, pelting storm, the gnawings of hunger becoming more and more intense, unprotected from the prowling beasts of that woody country, and despair ot finding their way out increasing every hour, how paintui must have been their situation ! The Hollidaysburgh Register, whence we have gathered the foregoing, says thaton Wednesday evening search for hein commenced, and was con- tinued throughout Thursday and Thureda night. On Friday morning some two or three huadred per- sons met and formed a line to ‘sweep the moun- tain,” as a last effort for their discovery. But it happened that the unfortunate young woman and children were too far to the right to come. within the range of the line, and so seemed destined to perish. Bat kind providence had ordered other- wise. A young manon the extreme right of the line, wandered ae little from his true course and heard a faint cry inthe distance. He immediately gave notice to the line, and after some expostula- tion, a detachment started in the direction indieat- ed, and at about a quarter of a mile’s march, they found the little party huddled together under a sort of shelter which the young woman had made with broken branches of bushes, &c. lor their protec. tion. In their extremity she had stripped her own person to afford relief to one of her little compan- tons, (a child of 4 years old,) which was near per- ishing. They wereallin the Jast stage of exhaus- tion, and must inevitably have perished if relief had not been afforded that day Axotngr Mueper, &c.—An affidavit was made before the Mayor on Saturday, by a man named Clark, charging a man (we did not learn the name, as we were unable to obtain a sight of the affida- vit yesterday,) with the murder of another, both wood choppers, in Ashgrove, parish of St. CO Rum was the prime agent in this bloody affair. It appears that the twain were intoxicated, anda quarrel arose between them, when one raised a heavy iron pot, and struck the other two violent blows on the head, causing his death. It appears that the murderer, ' unconscious of bis work, then lay down and slept until morning, when the’ man, Clark, arose, and made some coffee, awoke the latter, and told him to wake his companion. He went to the spot to do so, and found him liteless. He was arrested on urday, and was yesterday carried up to St. Charles Parish by Captain Your enes. He acknowledges the crime, and pleads drunkenness in extenuation.
