” HALF PAST SIX, A. M. ARRIVAL OF THE GREAT WESTERN. ONE DAY LATER. Farther Riots in Wales---Movements in Spain---State of the Markets. The steamship Great Western, Capt. Hosken, arrived this morning after a boisterous passage of fifteen and ahalf days) The whole voyage yards down ard topmasts struck. The last week experi- enced very thick weather. The G. W. brings 121 cabin passengers and a full freight. James Gordon Bennett, Esq. of the New York Herald, with his lady and child, passed through Liv- erpool on the 5th instant, on their way to Ireland. The packet ship Montezuma, which leit New York on the 19th ult., reached the Mersey on the Ath at 8 o’clock. The weather had improved, and the great corn market at Wakefield was not acted upon by the late heavy rains to the extent thatwe anticipated. No serious injury has yet been done to the crops, and if the remainder of the month shouid exhibit a fair portion of warmth and sunshine, all may yet be well. But the time is critical—sufficiently 80 to ex- cite apprehension. Nothing in the way of news had transpired since the departure of the Hibernia. Seville, Spain, con- tinued to be bombarded on the 25th ult., showing great resolution, but suffering great disasters. Sar- ragossa had sent in its adhesion to the Government at Madrid. The Junta of Burgos had arrested General Seoane, on his passage through that place. Madrid continued trarquil. Nothing otf importance from Ireland. The Lords of the Treasury had issued a minute, which had been received at Dublin, and a copy forwarded to every person holding office under Government, threatening with immediate dismissal every indi- vidual who connects himself in any way, however remote, with the agitation for the repeal of the Union. The repealers will, of course, regard this asa mere brutum fulmen, and laugh at it accord- ingly. Rerga, —O’Connell has invited Sharman Craw- ford and the beat of Ireland’s landlords to become members of the Repeal Aesociation. He says, in his letter, “that the relations between landlord and tennant cannot possibly be suffered to remain as they are. There must bean end put to the whole- sale massacres of the clearance system. There must be an end put to the retaliatory associations of agents, landlords, and in-coming tenants The stain of blood must be effaced by obliterating its causes, and that can be done only by an arrange- ment consented to, and concurred in, by the best class of landlords, and rendered sufficiently protec- tive of the occupying tenants. Nothing can be more absurd than to accuse the repealers of a desire for separation or for revolutionary violence. What we want is to preserve and improve the social state— not to injure it What we desire is to consilidate the connection with Eagland upon a popular basis —not to sever it.” The Augsburg Gazette mentions a report that the King of the French is not opposed to the idea of marrying the young Queen of Spain to an Italian Bourbon, and that negociations on the subject have been opened with the Court of Lucca. The earl said he would take this op- portunity of giving notice of his intention to present a petition from a very large class of the Protestant inhabitants of the ceunty of Down, respecting the act of Parliament relating to proce.sions in Ireland, He had intedded to present the petition in question on Monday next, but ashe understood there wou'd be some bbsiness before the house on that day, he would submit it to their lordship; on Tuesday. The market to-day maintains a steady eppearauce, and there is no alteration whatever in any description of American Cot- ton ; afairdemand continues to be experienced. Mr. Epiror— Thave sojourned here some days enjoying the hospitalities of kind friends, and the cour- tesies of those of its citizens, with whom I am in intercourse. I have taken some notes, and now feel just in the humor to frame them into shape for the H@fald. The population ,of this city numbers about 7000, and are generally imtelligent and pros perous. If, among the poorer classes, any should become the victims of poverty and disease, the rich generously contribute to peur every comfort around the bed of sickness and want, and foremost in the active exercise of the high and s:cred offices of this noble benevolence, are found the ladies of New Brunswick. I heard of one case, that of a poor Irishman, who was visited by some dispensation of Providence in the midst of entire destitution. His case was made known, and the dreary abode of ickness and want soon became an object of the enderest sympathies. The ladies visited him daily, and by their kind ministrations of every kind of comfort, brought health and gladness to his bedside. One of the noblest features of these benefactors is, that the creed or the country of their recipient has no weight with the bestowers—his poverty or sick- ness being the cally subject of inquiry ; and in either case he becomes the object of this pure and enlight- ened benevolence. i There are here 10 churches—3 Presbyterians, 2 Methodist, 2 Episcopal, 1 Catholic and 1 Afnean.— The Catholics are about 250. The Episcopalians aboutthe same number In the pulpit there is cou- siderable talent. Dr. Howe of the Middle Dutch Church, isa man of much knowledge—preaches well, and is free from bigotry. Dr. rownlee, of your city, pays him a periodical visit with a view to prevent Popery from taking any permanent root here. He has, I understand, made a discovery in the tactics of the pulpit. Voltaire’s ridicule shook the Christian temple to its centre. He laughed the sanctuary into contempt. The Doc- tor finding the battlements of the Romish fortress strong enough to resist the incessant fire of his evan- gelical artillery, has changed his plan of attack, and, like Voltaire, now laughs the woman in searlet into contempt. He kept the audience in Dr. Howe’s church, when last here, in “roars” of laughter, by. the recital of sundry stories and anecdotes of “ Mother Church.” This is a new principle in po- lemical warfare. The author deserves a patent Doctor Sperrow, who seems Dr. B ’s greatest rival in attachment to Rome, visited this city some time since, and preached with violence on popery, in Dr. Biren’s church. Dr Birch had at that time an Irish servant gitl, who resolved to tease the Doctor for the hard cuts he gave herchurch. After the Doctor had retired to bed at Dr. Birch’s, she got his boots to polish. She procured a long nail and drove ft through the toe of one of them, managing it so that the Doctor’s eye could not discover the trick until it was too late. In the morning his reverence pulled on his boots, when the nail performed its natural function of running through his foot, and his loud screams attested the accuteness of the pain he felt. The girl, Bridget, was asked by the good old Dr. B., now deceased, why she nailed the priest’s boot. She replied, ‘‘she was only sorry she could’nt nail his tongue, instead of his boot.” The Doctor left and preached no more. Bridget’s triumph was com- plete. She gained her object, without even sacri- fieing her place. Dr. Stubbs, of the Episcopal church, 1, I understand, a thorough Puseyite. His preaching powers are not of the most brilliant order. His style is pure, but wants vigor. Dr. McGuire, of the Catholic church, has been educated in France, the language of which he speaks with much fluency nd ease. He has materially improved the charac- ter of the Irish here, by the establishment of a tem- Perance society among them. The title of the chureh property is vested in himself, nor is it likely that the iocesan Statute ot Bishop Hughes will disturbe it. On his efforts to establish temperance, he had to en- counter all the low virulence of a banded clique of groggeries, appropriately called the “‘Hornets Nest.” Their severence from the worthy Doctor’ has operated as a_puritying process on the fold, as its moral tone and attention to religious observances have since become edifying examples to their neighbors. The Methodists here are respectable, in character and numsers, and deserve credit for not making the religion of their neighbors the sub- ject of invective Indeed, intolerance does not seem to have a foot hold here. i There are three hotels here, the Raritan, kept by an active and intelligent Yankee, Sirus Hall; the City, kept by Benjamin Stelle; and the Mansion House, by Delyraw. The two former are well Loa their proprietors are popularand worthy men, The latter does very little business, though it is one of the finest hous+s in town, being formerly a bank, and now owned by Dr. Fitch, of Philadelphia. But the woes that caused its explosion some sixteen years ago, as a bank, seem closely wedded to it nowasahotel Mr. Hall, of the Karitan, had the beautilul hotel, waich he built near the Railroad Depot, burned down about a year ago, and Madame Rumor has attached much blame to the fire eom- panies for not saving it, as they probably could, but the sin of being insured in New York was upon it, and go it must. This wasa loss of $10,000 to poor Hall; but Yankee like, his losses only stimulated his exertions. “ Bee The prison here is a two story stone building, one of the most gloomy looking sepulchres I ever saw, though Mr. Coanover, the worthy keeper, does everything to make the unhappy inmates comfort- alle. Here I saw six prisoners entombed, and among them the noterious Dr. Appleton, who sought protection of the law from the violence of the populace, who certainly would have tarred and feathered him, but for the timely interposition of Squire Fisk and Mr. Connover. This tor married a wile in Delaware, one in Indiana, one in Charleston, and his last victim is an interesting oung lady of this place. He is a Baptist preacher, and hes been lecturing through the country upon temperance and meemerism! This intamous polyg- amist should have been lynched, as the law dues notappear to reach his case. Two of his wives having been divorced from him, and afthird dead,the fourth intends to apply to the Legislature this win ter for adivorce. He worea black eye upon his arrival here, which he said he got from a cabman in New York.
