Navieatton or ree Omo.—The Pittsburgh Chrenicle attempts, with zeal worthy of a better cause, to convince the world that the Ohio Hest 3 Mf the biggest at the lite end, and that the navi; is better between Wheeling and Pit rg than between Wheeling -~, Cincinnati assertion is absurd, and 8 falsehood on its face. There are five shoals, laid down = i the chart, above Wheeling, to one below, and the points are equally shallow. The difficulty of navigation above Wheelin dt «Tae conelusively, by the tol- lowing facts. boats arrived at this place trom ie and’ were compelled to return down because of the low stage of water, although laden principally, for Pittsburgh, and principally Pittsburgh boats. In 1889 there were 71 under the same circumstances, 1840, 72; and in 1841, 7: 1842, 84. It was tor the interest of these boa we never heard a single individual except a Pitts burgh editor, state that there was as good navigation above as below Wheeling. Even the American Encyclopedia, a work certainly not written in pre- judice, states that “ Wheeling is the rfrcigh pointon the Ohio, from which passengers or freight can be shipped with any degree of certainty.” The Pittsburgh papers, in the same breath that they boast of Toate of water in the rivers, sing pw ans to their little wet-tailed dinkey boats, that a eart-load of rock would sink in their ia days, and Sawete: which and a John ps ake oven, with Captain M‘Gruder’s short allowance, the tra- veller al have much difficulty in_ choosing. Why is this ? what is their fancy for little stern- wheel whirligigs that cannot run two miles an hour in daylight, it they have plenty of water ? Canyou tellus that, master? But, pshaw! this story of the Chronicle 1s only, asa transcendentalist would say, one of the “ category of the infimite” lies that the ew papers love to tell for show.— Wheeling Loss OF THE eee Vauiry.—The steamboat Tennessee Valley, which left St Louis on the 7th inst. for New Orieans, sunk in deep water after pro- ceeding about 100 miles. Boat and cargo a total loss. One man is supposed tohave been drowned. All the books, bills of lading, and every piece of business paper connected with the boat, were lost, she having sunk in about five minutes from the time she struck. Her cargo consisted of 5000 or 7000 sacks corn; 150 10 200 bhds. tobacco; 400 bbls flour; 600 sacks oats; 1800 sacks wheat; 400 or 500 pigs of lead, and a large quantity of merchandize, furniture, baggage, &c.
