The alteration in the British tariff of last year, opened a wide door for the admission of American pro” duce, and greatly enhances the welfare of |the farmers of the United States. Under it, the market for American provisions is rapidly extending in importance. The article of clocks is a very interesting item. They are the wooden clocks of Connecticut, and several invoices have already found ready sole in Liverpeol and that neighborhood: Their introduction at first created no small surprise, Their neatness, utility, and cheapness, brought them into high favor. The export of all articles of wood, cedar ware, &c., is likely to become very extensive to England. They pay aduty of 10 per cent only! The manufacture of cotton 1s rapidly extending this year, notwithstanding thecry of distress, which has been so long and loud This is opparent in the quantity taken for consumption, The following is an aecount of the cotton in Great Bri tain on the Ist June, and the Ist July :— To Bie} 1 Jess i Stock June 1. The average consumption loseuidedy it appears, 4 per cent ia the month of Jane, and the average for the first #°x months of the present year was 7 per cent higher than during the same period of the past year. This is incon- trovertible evidence that the trade is rapidly improvin, The whole policy of Eagland of late years has been to encourage the introduetion of American produce into England, and promote commercial reciprocity; on the other hand the United States have gone back to that ex- ploded system, the perseverance in which has ruined the once prosperous empire of Spain. Let us compare the duties imposed by England on American productions, ‘ond those imposed by the United States on English pro- ductions, as follows:— Eneli ih dutic U. The single article of tobacco is alone charged with an exorbitant duty in Englan “while under the United States tariff almost overy article of British industry 1s charged with prohibitive duties, This does not manifest a spirit worthy of the Republic.
