Awidst these stand still days, when the ‘dog star reigns,” and the planters of our county are giving-the finishing touches to nature’s own portrai!—or as we commonly call it, laying by the crop—I drop you a few lines from the quiet scenes of village life. During the fall, winter and spring mouths, ourlittle town presents a busy scene —our streets are full of wagons, dispatching pro duce to and from the railroad, which is on the great southern thoroughfare from New York to New Or- leans. Our county is not very eld in the map of the world, having only been setiled about thirty-six years. Severalof the first settlers are still in our midst, pursuing the even tenor of their way, and are too old and too wise to conform to all the im- r8veinents which etiquette and fashion have thrown broad east over our once happy land, and which [ fear will yet overthrow all the domestic comforts of social life, as itought to be enjoyed. It has rained every day for the last three weeks.— At present there is every prospect of a heavy crop of corn, cotton and potatoes, especially if we have some sunshine mixed in. We are generally ‘u the midst of extremes in this delightful climate. So wet, so dry,so hot, so cold, that people say they can’t make any thing, ordo any thing. Yet strange to say, thousands have made fortunes, both by mar- rying and by work, and so will thousands more in the sunny south. HappaKkuk. Avon Sp f (Correspondence of the Herald.) Avon Springs, Aug. 6, 1843. Crowd of Visiters at Avon—Medicinal Qualities of the Water—* Sugarbury Retreat.” Frienp Bennett :— Dean Sin—Delightful Avon is thronged with vi- siters; some making a brief sojourn for the purpose linger around our healing waters, in the hope of early restoration. The sanative qualities of the New Bath Spring are fast winning their way to en- viable celebrity. The intelligent and enterprisin; proprietor, Keuben K. Hickox, Esq , discovered this salubrious fount in 1834; the waters possess in- gredients common to other springs in the neighbor- hood, but in different combination, and are enli- vened with treble the amount ef wriform fluid— withal, the water is very cold, and made grateful to the palate by some rare’ and dulcitying property. 1 have visited the celebrated German spring, also Sharon, Saratoga, and the Warm, White, and Ked Sulphur Springs of Virginia, Harrow, and other watering places in England, but Fave never drank at afountain that so highly impressed me with its value asan active and powerful agent in the cure of disease, as the New Bath Spring of Avon. From a gravelly bed it oozes up, And sparkles like chrystal in the cup; Young Beauty comes with visage wan, Her voice is faint, her brightness gone; She drinks a glass of the “New Bath Spring,” Aud hope returns with radiant wing; While the beffled fiend of disease retires, And life rekindles her wasted fires. Hurrah for the fountain clear and cold, Dispensing health to the young and old; A song of joy is in its flow, ‘The wide world will soon its virtues know. Haste then, haste, ye stricken ones ! From the well-head of bliss a current runs, And thos who quaff it will thence depart, Rescued from death, and renewed in heart. Before closing my letter, I will give the “Sugar- bury Ketreat,” that well known boarding house, # passing notice. It is kept by Colonel C. Marsh, and if urbanity of manners and skill in selecting choice liquors and delicate viands, are desirable accom- plishments in a landlord, my friend, the Colonel, is worthy of patronage. Attaehed to his embowered abode isa fine livery stable, where his guests can be accommodated with well groomed steeds and glit tering pleasure carriages. Captain Asa Brown, of the “Queen's Rangers,” Canada, C. Ford. Eeq , Judge ‘Todd, of Chicago, and many other gentle- men are now honoring the “Retreat” with their company. More anon. ‘Truly yours, Lo. Diamond Cove. {Correspondence of the Herald. Diamonp Cove, (near Portland,) ? August 7th, 18 Excursion to Hog Island—Diamond Cove—Funand Frolic—The Prospect—A Chowder—Sport—Finale. Dear Bennert— On Thursday last I received a polite invitation to join a party of ladies and gentlemen, bound on one of these pleasure trips down the harbor, with a view to land upon Hog Island, and enjoy a ** chowderand accompaniments.” The morning was lovely, and alter a pleasant sail of some two hours or more, we hove to, and came to anchor in front of one of the most remantic locales | have seen for many a day. Diamond Cove, than which no brighter spot “‘be- neath the sun is spread,” is located on the easterly side of the island. The form of the cove is a cre- scent, and takes its name of “ Diamond,” I believe, from the existence of a ledge of stone in the vicini- ty, from which, in former days, visitors used to gather small particles of a transparent mineral (a sort of chrystal), which was very clear and bri- lant. ‘This spot is emphatically the resort of our ci- tizens in the warm season, and the excellent fishing grounds in the immediate neighborhood, renders it a most capital place for a chowder or fry Our party was composed ot some dozen couple of choice spirits, and having come toanchor ofl shore, we first proceeded in the small boats, to land our preciouslive stock, ond a(terwards followed with the big pan, chowder-kettle, culinary matters, and fixins in general. Imagine your correspondent—by the way, the most modest, retiring, unpretending bachelor in Christendom—stationed, ae general acclamation, at the “post of honor” upon the gunwale of the smail boat, and doing the agreeable to some twenty rol- licking, joyous, bright eyed lasses, as they passed over the schooner’s side. “ Dear me, how it tips,” shouts the cherry-cheek- ed Charlotte, asshe jumps on board, pays the toil, and scampers to the stern sheets. * Oh, Mr. H——, | can’t stand up —pray hold me,” says Miss C——s, and with both arms round her de- licate waist, I assist her over the thwarts. — “ Hold me fast,” cries the charming Miss W——— (and didn’t I obey, though)—“ there, there, that will do—thank ’ee ; I'm very well now.” Then came the sprightly Sarah S——, with her pretty little fat foot and small ankle. (I coulda’t help seeing the aukle, because the side of the “Sea Gull” isso high.) Sarah is very timid on the wa- ter; she clasped my neck to the decided disarrange- ment of my well plated cravat. Then followed the charming Miss B——t, whose naughty auburn ringlets became entangled with my breast pin, and brought her rosy lips in tantalising contact with my own. | uh And then came her sister, who “positively could not stand at all, the boat was so uneasy ;” and then the lovely Anne S——h, and Misses B. and G, and more-—all beauty, all life, all enjoyment. Weill, as have said, the day is delightful—we land ia safety, and while a portion of the party go in quest of “a mess” of the finny tribe, some few of the pone remain to keep guard, amuse the ladies, nificent. Beyond, on the left, stands Barn Island, a barren place, without an object upon it, save a single dila- pidated building, which stands out boldly on its ton, relieved against the clear blue sky. Farasthe eye can reach, in every direction, the broad expanse of water is studded and dotted with islands of various formsand sizes, upon most of which, however, are farmsin a high state of cultivation, The harbor is tralya beautiful one.
