The stock market presented no very remarkable fea- tures to day, and prices did not alter materially. Harlem fell 4; Long Island §; Canton rose }; Farmers’ Loan 3; Minois }. At the new board there was nothing remarkable. In another column will be found the dividend notice of he Jefferson Insurance Company. It will be seen that 11 Per cent is Jeclared for the last six months, makinz a re imbursement of tho whole capita: to the stockholders since 1837. We apprehend that few iustitutions can show such successful business as is indicated in that result.— The secret of success is clearness of judgment, prompt- ness of decision, and integrity of purpose. The Union Bank of Louisiana owes, in November, 1844, $2,400,000 of State bonds, issued to it by the State, which fall due at that time. The late President of the hank has gone to Europe, it is rumored with the view of making some arrangement for the retirement of the bonds which cannot be paid. These bonds were quoted at 50 in Longon by tie last advices, and may offer 9 fair chance | fora privete epecw lation. A bill has passed one branch of the Mississippi Legi: ture to put the Planters’ Bank in liquidation. The present state of the revenues of the country render some readjuciment of the tariff evidently necessary, in order toenpply means forthe uses of the Treasury. The amount derivable from the customs must be increased. This 18 to be done by reducing those duties which now are prohibitive, and by raising tho ratce on other articles. None offer so fair a subject for revenu as tea and ccftee; and probably something will be done at the coming sion towards making these articles dutieble. The im. | pression that this will be the case is indicated in the im- mense imports of those articles which are going on. The import of teas at this port, duriag the menth of July, reach the cnormous amount of 2,000,000 lbs. and they will probably continue large. The same Indications are ap- parent in the article of coffee, es is seen in the following table :— Imports or Corrre into tHe Port or N. Youx ann THE Whote Imroxr into tHe U. States. Into New Tito United : York. Moderate revenue duties upon these articles would give tothe Treasury a revenue of something near $4,500,000 per annum; and throwing out of view all designs to protect any class of citizensat the expense ofthe others, the re- venue from articles now charged with probibitive im- ports would make receipts into the Treasury sufficient for the wants of the government. This is the day up to which the first quarterly returns of the New York banks are to be made for publication un- der the new law, which requires them to be published oror before the 20th of the month. The possibility is that necessity that the banks labor under to maintain their dividends will increuse their anxiety to employ their funds after this return shall be complete. As yet no increased de~ mand for business purposes is apparent, nor did the state of the bill market by the Jast packet indicate any increase of orders for goods, usual at this period of the year. The interior of the country is much in want of currency, and the money now accumulating in New York would long since have been finding its way west, if it had been ina shape to circulate; but it is mostly foreign coin, and to pass threugh the mint absurdly located in Philadelphia, | requires an expense which is equivalent to heavy seigno- rage upon the coinage. The demand for money for circu lation must be sufficient to overcome this expense before money will flow easily into the channels of circulation, and while the vile promises of banks arc allowed to circu- late as money, no coin will get into circulation. A Cle: land, Ohio, paper remarks as follows :— Exchange on the enst is advancing. The banks are drawing at 1} for Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana paper—the demand is good, and there is none offering in market.— The principal cause of the rise here is owing to merchants and shippers of produce to New Orleans, buying the = ds of paper, which they cando at a discount, and ing ry up theriver to purchese exchange, in ae to bringing up specie. These Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana bills areata dis count of } per cent for specie, which makes the exchange for specie } percent. Aslongas this paper is takon for | bills drawn against produce, there will no specie find its way into Ohio. Let us lock back at the fluctuations to | currency in that State :— Banns or Onto. Teens, Cirew'n. eee 9,751,979 S20 17,079,714 18,178,699 13.800, WO 520,560 085,513 six todo the business of the State. If they maintain the | movement, an the figures now presented, it will beas 8. frow floating at $10,000,000, will be reduced to $2,000,000, when the population and resources of the State h: in- creased 40 per cent. The loans of the banks, from $20,- 000,000 are reduced to $4,000,000, without a chance of having them much increased. In this latter item we have the true index to the probable amount of business | which will be done dependent upon bank faellities. In 1836, the population of Ohio was 1,000,000 persons, and they owed the banks 20,000,000, or about $20 each, mostly for goods bought in the Atlantic States on credit. In 1839—40, the population was 1,519,467, and they owed the Danks near $17,000,000, or $11 each, for goods. The loans of the banks are mostly to dealers and merchants, and not to ogriculturalists. They represent the artificial means | which has been furnished to the people to buy goods be- yond the amount of the proceeds of their labor. The pop: ulation of Ohio now, at the same ratio of increase, is 1,700,000, and they owe the banks but $4,000,000, or about $2,25 only, each. Yet the productions of Ohio sent to market greatly exceed in quantity those of any former years, ond must command cash. The liquidation of the banks diminishes the purchases of goods, and increases the exports ofthe States. Hence this year the people of Ohie have not the means of buying more than they can pay for. If their produce is not sold they can buy nothing and their purchases will keep pace with the amount of their sales, Under bank inflation, the purchases went on while produce was actually held for high prices by the bank agencies. The samerstate of affairs is more or less apparent in all the States, and forms a broad basis for the continued wbundance of money on the Atlantic border. As the interior cannot purchase[more than they pay for, the exports of the Atlantic be commensurate to and no outlet for specie to go serious extent will present itselfjand the money now on the Atlantic must be earnad by the interior before it is sent thither. For these reasons, independent of the tariff ques- tion, we arenot of those who expect a large business the present fall in imported goods.
