Like every intelligent | | military man who has expressed an opinion on the | |gubject, General Worth seems to think that Key | 0 shall | West sheuld be fortified. | strange that the importpnee of this Island to our | Government seems to be so little understood. | sessing the very best harbor south of the Chesapeake, | Fotay- | in the United States, lying immediately on a great | | highroad of commerce, and having within itself ex- | cellent matertal for constructing fortifications, it | may yet become a hornets’ nest to the commerce | of our country, if the government take n® measures d | to retain their possession. The British man-of-war brig Albatros, of sixteen | guns, came into our harbor this morning, and will | remain here th ee or four days, but we know not the elt, | cause of this unusual visit. Vivian, from Buenos Ayres, we have received full files of the “Argentine News” | tothe 17th of June, from which we make the fol- lowing extracts. The American schooner Caroli- nian was caught in the act of smuggling provisions for the Buenos Ayreans, by the Monte Video gun- boats, and taken into Monte Video, and will proba- bly be confiscated. On the 2d inst., the Frenchmen and Italians, after agreat deal of blustering, made a sally from the town, in concert with the Africans—in all, a bode of about 4000 men. They advanced as tar as thy out-posts of President Oribe’s army, when a heavy skirmish took place, which lasted for a few houra, and the result of which proved to those aspirants of military glory, that there as Tom Crib used to say, a vast diflerence between sparring and fighting. They came back after receiving a sound drubbi and have not since tried their hand again at suc! play. There was, however, a grand spectacle on their return, not to celebrate victory, but to bury the dead of the French corps. The account of this ceremony, which forcibly reminds us of what we witnessed in Buenos Ayres in 1829, and in which the honors paid to the victims of the “three glorious days” in Pare have been ludicrously parodied, is most romantically pathetic, and we would advise such of our readers aa are fond of emotions to pe- ruse the funeral orations of Messrs. Pelabaere, La- mas, and Bustamente, and the order of the day of the redoubted Col. Thiebaut.. Above all Comman- dant Pelabaere’s farewell address to his fallen com- rades was sublimely eloquent—“‘l swear to avenge you, aye, I swear by God, by my honor, and Nae e point of this sword,” exclaimed the galla t chief ; and the legions answered, ‘‘And we too,” with an emphasis well calculated to produce a most thrilling effect on the electrified by-standers. ‘ Private letteis from Montevideo acquaint us that the Riverista authorities still affected to believe that England would be induced to interfere in their be- alt, and alleged their confidence in a favorable re- sult to the communications transiitted Mi Commo- a dore Purvis, per “ Partridge,” in March laet, as the reason why they did net risk a decisive battle, the issue of which, when it took place, taey pretended not to fear. On the strength of this assurance, they have made proposals for another loan tothe amount of $400,000, holding out, at the same time the threat, that if the capitalists did not come forward, they would make an emission of paper money. That they are “hard up” tor funds may be readily believed, when it is recollecied that they are in the. receipt of no revenue, and under the necessity of incurring heavy expenses; and it would not be sur- prising that these :eckless men who, after selling all the public property that could fetch a dollar, have not hesitated to seize the funds of pious and chani- table institutions, and even those of minors, as well as judicial deposits, should appeal in their despera- tionto aresource so fraught with consequences of the most ruinous description to every class of the | community; but that the evil will work out its own remedy may be confidently anticipated. z It was reported that violent measures against the friends of President Oribe, in Montevideo, were in contemplatien, but the nature of which was not known. rn ‘There had been some fighting on the Cerro, but without any important results. The insurrection in Corrientes. as might have een expected, after the sad experience which the people of that province have undergone, has proved a complete failure. The revolutionists met with no sympathies among the peasantry, and although, from the absence of an adequate armed force, they were enabled to seize the capital, they could not find asingle man of any standing that would accept the office of Governor; every citizen of respectabi- lity having emigrated oa their rpproach. [np their distress they had recourse to the parish priest, but even there they met with a rebufl. Since then they have been attacked by a combined division of Correntinos and Entrerianos, under the command of Col. Ramirez and Col. Tacuabe, and completely routed at Curucuatia. As this victory would lead | to the immediate re-occupation of the Capital, and | consequently to the restoration of the legal authori- ties, Col. Lucas Moreno, who had been detached by General! Urquiza with a strong column, had repassed the Uraguay in order to join his commander; and, the latter, at the date of the last advices trom Pay- sandu, was making active preparatione to cross the Rio (Negro with an imposing force, and, what is more, an abundant supply of spare horses. Indeed, we believe that by this time he will have passed that stream; and we have no doubt that Rivera will soon be obliged either to try his fortune in an- other engagement with the conquerors of Arroyo Grande, or go and join the ranksof the Farrapos in Rio Grande, whither he has been already preceded by his friend Baez, and many more of his late fol- jowers. _ Of one thing we are certain: if Commodore Pur- vis remain much longer in this river, he will have abundant reason to acknowledge that he was mi- serably deceived in underrating the resources of the Argentine Confederation. Buenos Ayres has been ited with a heavy gale of wind from the E. $.E., which commenced early in the morning of the 29th May, and continued un- til the afternoon of the 80th. It has caused great damage to the shipping in that port, as will be seen by the following details: — The barque Aurora, of Boston, Doyle, Master, went on shore near the Recoleta, on Tuesday mor- ning, having been run foul of during the night and parted two chain cables—was obliged to cut away the masts, is high and dry at ordinary tides, had 35 bales on board, Mtn Uy Boston. The barque Serene, White, master, of Baltimore, parted two cables, having been run foul of by a vessel unknown, lost joremast close to her deck, brought up by stream anchor after drifting near the Argentine squadron, from whom Capt. White re- ceived assistance of men, anchor, and cable. Brig Oswego, Greene, master, of Boston, after losing her anchors, received a pilot from Admiral Brown and proceeded to Las Conchas. Schoener Saratoga, of Boston, lost two anchors, and sustained damage by getting foul of a vessel in the inner roads. During the late gale the boats of the Argentine squadron were of great service, and saved from wreck several vessels of different nations. On the 29th, during the worst part of the Brown sent boats to every veseel in res on the evening of that day he had but one officer on board hia vessel, the othe i different foreign vessels. We have much pleasure in publishing a letter addressed to Admiral Brown, who sent anchors, cables, and men, wherever wanted :— le, Admiral in fact, rs being absent on board ConsuLaTe or Tur U.S. or America, Buenos Ayres, May 81, 1843 } Str—On the 29h instant the barque Serene, ot Baltimore, and the brig Oswego, of Boston, were assisted by boats sent by your order from th gentine squadron under your command. e Ar- The humane and friendly feelings that induced the officers of the Argentine equadron during the height.of the gale and at great risk toall in the boats, to board these vessels, by which two valuable car- ‘oes were saved from total loss, cannot be too high. ly appreciated, and at the request of Captain White, of the barque Serene, and Captain Green, of the brig Oswego, | have the pleasure to transmit to you their grateful acknowledgments for the timely as- sistance they received from you and the officers ua- der your command.
