Times. of gold or silver 1028 Ine NEW YORK, PUESDAS MORNING, JULY 25, i843. Nutsances Again. Mr. Eprror,—We are happy to see that the in- tolerable nuisances of slaughter houses begina in these hot days to attract the attention of our suffer- ing citizens. I reside in the Ninth Ward, and near Fourth street and Sixth Avenue, and ina section of the most closely built and compact dwelling hoes in the city. Tt you take a small circuit, described by Bleecker street, Sixth Avenue and Fourth sireet, or Barrow, and as amall a space as itis, we will ven- ture to affirm there are not less than two to three hundred families; and yet, within this narrow com- pass, there are several Oy these abominable slaughter house nuisances. Fourth street from Sixth Avenue to Barrow street, kept in the most awful state of filth and dirt, by reason of a large slaughter house on its south side. Their offal and ether carts fill both sides of the street for nearly a whole block. The butchers and their rowdy boys work all day on Sunday and all Sunday night, disturbing the whole neighborhood, and preventing sleep, by rea- son of their loud oaths and horrid yells, combined with the bleating und lowing of cattle, the barking and howling of dogs, with popping of whips and rattling #f carts. The noise of the half sava butcher’s boys seems to be greatly improved by the suailtary aid of a grog shop or two close at hand, where they drink and revel when not at work, during the entire night. This scene of noise, dis: turbance, &c. is kept up every night in the week; but is much worse on a Sabbath afternoon and night than any other. A_ whole tier of well built brick and genteel hou- ses, inhabited by respectable fentiee, is annoyed to the severest degree of misery, the condition of this street and slaughter house’ by ybe too, have to close their windows to keep out swarme of flies; but to little purpose; for they find entrance, and stain the panes of glass and all the furniture with their filth. The people of this neighborhood have refrained from gomplaining for fear of ofiending the sovereign rowdies in the neighborhood, who, in re- venge tor compiaints, might inflict some greater evil, without the fear of the Corporation or the law betore their eyes. But seeing your correspondent’s notice of similar evils in this part of the town, causes us to feel alittle comrage, and to hope something may be done for our reliet. Landlords are as much or more interested in these nuisances than tenants; because, if they cannot be abated, they will soon find them entirely unoccu- pied by respectable people, whereby their rents may be materially reduced. It is the duty of landlord: to sue at once tor injunctions against these infernal nuisances, unknown to any other decent city in the world, in the midst of their thickest population.— And why are cartmen permitted to drop their idle carts before other people’s doors, thus obstructin their way, and nom gh the street more dirt! filthy than it would otherwise be? This should als be prohibited. A Crrizen ov THE 91H Warp ann A SUFFERER. From Brermupa.— By the Falcon, Capt.
