James Gornon Bennet, Esq.:— Dear Stn:—As many things, worthy of a passing notice, are daily transpiring among us, and as your Buflalo correspondents have been exceedingly negli- gentof late, one of your old “letterwriters” is again induced to give yourself and numerous readers, an “inkling” of doings and ehit-chat of qur great and flourishing enty of the lakes. Daring the season, .thus far, business of all kinds has assumed a more lively aspect than for several years past, and I am inclined to conelude, from pre- sent indications, that a brighter and more auspicious state of things, in reference to trade and commerce, is soon to dawn upon us. To bring about a result so desirable, nothing is necessary but for the people to practice industry and economy, which, if strictly adhered to, will surely produce a more healthy state of affairs than we have known for many years. Possessing as we do, all the elements of refinement, civilization and prosperity, we should seek to retain the proud position we have hitherto heldasa nation. We should study no selfish or narrow-minded prin- ciples in our career through life, but as Lovers of our commen country, and as triends to itslaws and pub- lic institutions, we should go in for iis farther ad- vancement, and for a more lofty elevation of a hap- py and independent people. The lake steamers, up to the present time, Iam informed, have been doing a good business in the way of transporting freight and passengers. You may boast of your Hudson river boats for speed, and we of the “ Queen City,” will pride, ourselves upon our magnificent “floating palaces” of the lakes, which for safety in a gale, can hardly, be equalled even upon the Mississippi. We have many beauti- ful boats, but my favorites are the “ Iliinois” and “Great Western.” Many others, however, equally beautiful, walk upon the bosoin of our inland seas, with whose masters I have not the pleasure of anac- quaintance. ‘There has been more emigration this season, than for several years, and the tertile west is destined to be the heart of our proud and happy country. Commercial afiairs are beginning to wear a more promising aspect, and those who manage business pradeatly will hardly fail of success. Western tra- ders, generally speaking, appear to meet wich pros- perity inthe pursuitsof money-getting. 1n addition to the transportation of mevchandize, an immense quantity of flour and other produce has been re- ceived here, and forwarded to your city and the east. The political horizon, in this sYicinity, appears as “calm asa summer’s morning,” and politicians are dying for excitement. A few weeks since we hud a Repeal heal inthe park, and a Jittle speech making b: -Mayor Clinton and ethers. Jt was announce that Attorney General Barker would ad- dress the meeting, but for some reason, best known to himself, and to the disappointment of many, he did not take the stand. It happened that gone, of the presiding officers were whigs, in consequence of which, the Commercial pretends that the meeting was only called for political eflect. Whether i was s0 er not, considerable money was contributed by the benevolenttor the benefit of suflering and oppres- sed Ireland, and much feeling and patriotism exhi- bited byt those who addressed the meeting. Little is said here in reference to the approaching presidential campaign. Mr. Clay will undoubtedly be the candidate of the whigs, but with a popular apeere rihere will send an express the above aamed and intermediate pl: ing a the 9th iust., forthe tr: ans portation of baurles aad packages of goods, collection of draltsy bills, ne oid ageounte;and all suet other business a3 ma ae POMEL OY te CO. ning of lake navi N.B. inn ina pe hy the above express hive wall be extensed to Chicago, Cine: »y ted contiaued th ut the cutive season, in conn with their New York, Albany, SS FOR GLEVELAND AND DETROIT. through from tis city, ae onthe morn be entrusted to Troy, and Buffalo only or man from the democratic ranks, and the strength of that powerful party arrayed against jhe can hard- ly hope for agreat political victory. Morality and religion appear to be on the wane, and christians are becoming luke-warm, or rather ave lost in some measure, that devotion and zeal which wasso abundantly manitested last winter.— I amin hopes that some minister of talent and abili- ty will visit us in the course of the summer and stir up the people—professed christians, as well as sin- ners. ‘The cause of temperance, I am glad to say, is still the importance of sobriety inthe community, Let temperance men labor with zeal and many may yet receive the benefits of total abstinence. The influenza has been prevailing here tora few weeks past with much severity, though with few, if any, fatal results. It has, however, somewhat aba- ted within the past week—probably half of our popu- ee during its prevalence have been on the sick ist. A great many marriages have taken place during the summer, and many more, [ am informed, are on the tapis. This is right. Nothing can be more natural. As the fashionable season approaches, our city 1s honored with visits from many distinguished stran- gers, on their way to the Falls; and, as it may be of service to some who have never visited this de- lightful summer retreat, it may be well to point out the best conveyances from this city. ‘To those who admire a romantic excursion, and magnificent scenery, the steamboat ‘* Waterloo,” Captain J. Lewis, offers p’ jar advantages. This boat leaves the footof Maia street for the Falls, every morning, at eight o’clock, passing Grand and Navy Islands, and much of the loveliest scenery on the Niagara. ‘The cars also leave Buffslo every morning at nine oe ek, aad those w ho dike to go through the world railroad 8p *can hardy tail of being p d with this mode ot conveyance. ‘The busiaces of the Buffalo post offi hafiected by expre dis’ ribution issued by the Postrnaster General, some time since, that our Postinaster has been obliged to dismiss his first assistant, and some two months ago, one of his clerks, the revenue, | am intormed having fallen off about $6,000, and the distribution about $40,000, This is quite an item in the busi- ness of one office, and if correct, the Postmaster’s economical arrangements, so tar as his office is co: cerned, are highly commendable. Since the termination of the Buffalo and Attica Railroad, down street, the tendengy torheavy com- mercial bneiness appears to concentrate itself in that partof the city. Several extensive dealers are located in that vicinity. From the life and activity manifested by occupants and owners of property here, I have no doubt but this street will be the centre of our commercial operations, Our national anniversary pacged off yesterday in an unusually quiet manner. A rie arnt public arrangements having been ‘nate y our citizens, every one was left to celebrate the day on his own hook, There were, however, several steamboat excursions, a number of temperance lectures, an oration by Dr. Lord (thinly attended) before the Apprentices Society, a ball by Messrs. ‘Thomas and Goodwin at the Washington Hotel, and a display of fire works in the evening. I have ‘fheard of no xe- cidents, and saw but tew drunken men in our streets during the day. » We have hada cont season, thus far, and lam told the crops in the country are rather backward. Tnsome of the Western States, | am informed the wheat crop promises an abundant harvest. le Street Theatre has been doing a fair business during the season, but closed last evening, with a tremeudous house, until the first of Pay The other amusements of the summer have been quite limited. Mons. Adrien, and a fellow by the name of Flagler, have had a low Pusch and Judy exhibition for some time past in the lower part of the city, but left (or * parts unknown" last Sunday. I have nothing further to communicate at this time; but if any thing important should oceur, and I have leisure to write, you may expect to hear occa- sionally, from Yours, &e. i Laren rom Sr. Tromas —A letter received per schr. The market was well supplied with American produce. Laten wrom Nassau, N. P.—By the schooner James Power, at Baltimore, we have received files of the Nas- san Observer, and Royal Gazette, to the 26th ult. but find little of interest in them. No mention is made ofthe re- ported action betweeaa British man of war brig ond a irate. There was no local news of im- portance. We find in our papers the Mexican account of the fight between Com. Moore and the Mexican fleet, a reported by the Marine, imiral commanding, under date of May 17th ; he says -— On the morn! ing of the 16th, about sunrise, the Texan = with five smaller ones armed by Yucatan, moved out ef port, 1 immediately prepared for action, bearing down on them to within range of my and about 18 o'clock opened a fire on them from fy steamers Guada- loupe and Mentezuma, and scheoner re ‘The enem: answered promptly, and a lively fire was kept up by boti parties till balf past 8 in the evening, when he retired to the harbor of Campeachy. The enemy succeeded in striking the Montezuma four times and the Guadaloupe six times, doing but trifling damage to either vessel, not wounding even uny person on board. I have not been able to learn the amount of damage sustained by the enemy, but it is inferred that it ix considerable from the fact that he retreated so precipitately into shoal water under the protection of the guns of the fort.” ‘The Admiral reports that the greatest eagerness was shown by theofticera and crews to engage in the fight, and that even the sick begged permission to join their comrades in the noble struggle. Laren rrom Camrkacny.—There were two Spa- nish brigs at Lerma. on the 17th ult., taking on board troops bound to Laguira. The Mexican steamers Montezuma and Guada- loupe were lying off Lerma. The Texas fleet were in the harbor of Campeachy. Laven raom Tamrico.—The scheoner Virginia Antoi nette, Capt. Delvaille, arrived in port yesterday, in eight days from Tampico, Abcut 600 of the troops from Yuca- tan arrived at that port late in May, and the vessels were chartered to return in the same service. We were in- formed on good authority some time since, that anew rev- olution was on the eve of breaking out in Mexico, and some translations from papers brought by the Virginia Antoinette, go to confirm the information. The Courier states that an official communication of General Nichol Bravo, addressed to the Minister of War, dated 17th Ma: announces thet the Indians have assembled, to the nu: ber of about 3000, in the evirons of Chiopa, in th Hie that a reinforcement of 1000 men are ex jap. 'T' voll by persone from Pacblaand Mexico, They have de- clared in favor of the federation, end they threaten to ca ture Chiapa. General Bravo urges thavit is impossible for him to render any assistance in case of an attack w that city, as he could not raise more than two hund cruits among the population. He adds, that if ‘ate-in- forcement be not dispatched to his assistance, it will be im porsible for himevento maintain the post committed to his charge, from the assaults of the brig ip O. Bulletin. Departure or tuk Farmourn anp Somers.— The U.S. ship Falmouth, and brig Somers, of the home squadron, left our harbor on Saturday mor- ning; the former bound to New York, the latter to Pensacola. The Falmouth went out with “all sail set,” while the Somers had only her fore and main- topéail and jib set. Notwithstanding this disparity in canvas, t ine Somers walked ahead of her superior. This would seem to substantiate the assertion that the Somers is eqnal to her reputation as a sailer.— Sav. Rep. 2d inst. fommanding F.
