The Crops, Fruit, Sc. um New Jersey—The Locusts —The Influenza—The late Storm—Old Reynolds and the New York Newspapers—The Pavilion, §¢. Drax Sm: I have just returaed from a tour through three or four counties of this State, jand have called a halt here for an hour or so, to note down a tew facts for your readers. All through the upper counties of New Jersey, the rye looks most remarkably well; and on one or two farms they commenced cutting on Saturday last. The crop through the State will be en unu- sually large one. I regret to say the corn in the same region will hardly reach two-thirds of an ave- rage crop; the cold, backward spring, aad long- continued drought have injured it very much. The barley looks fine, anti will yield a full crop; but the wheat looks exceedingly sickly ; fortunately there has been much less than usual sown for this season. Several farmers commenced buckwheat sowing last week with good prospects. Fruit has been and will be unusually abundant, with the exception of peaches. Of strawberries there have been sent to New York market this seagon from the parish of New Muford alone, 65,000 baskets, varying in price from 12 to 2cents. ‘The trees are loaded down with cherries; currants are equally abundant, and the prospect tor upples, plums, &c., and in fact every thing but peaches, is that there will be a much larger supply thun has been known for years. But a blight seems to have struck the peach trees, and in many parishes the crop will be hardly worth gathering.— One man in the neighborhood of Hackensack, who has in one year cleared $5000 by his peach orchards, will this year hardly realize $500. The hay crop 13 very small, owing to the drought. : The locusts have disappeared suddenly—with the exception of astray male flitting about here and there, apparently astonished to find ‘‘he’s out” with- out any partners— “All his short-lived companions being used up and gone.” They have done but little injury; none to the crops; killed some few trees entirely—destroyed branches of many more; and stung one boy in the Viochter so much that he died in consequence. ‘The influenza has been felt very severely all through the centre counties of this State; and is ma- king 1s way northward and westward, taking fxs cisely the same course as the cholera did in 1832 Thave met with two cases of it which terminated fatally. Oue near the New Bridge, above tacken- sack and the other at New Miltord. The name of the first victim was Mr. A. Demarest; the name ot the latter | have gorgotten. In both instances the dis- ease attacked the brain—Mr. D. had to have, his limbs ed, and, { believe, died almost raving. The digease here, however, seems to attack but two or three members out of a family of six or seven; and is less general than it was in New York. ‘Lhe article you published about the doctor’s shop at Hackensack, caused considerable excitement among the dry bunes of the Dutch in that village of ancient days, aud pure ana undefiled locotocoism. It had one good efiect, that of making the worthy doctor label his bottles. The storm that visited New York on Sunday, was scarcely feltat the Fiats, New Miltord, 17 miles {rom New York ; the sky was overcast for an hour, there were three or four claps of thunder, two or three flasies of lightning, the wind blew a good tresh breeze for twenty minutes, and then the sun shone out, and the sky was as clear and calm as at thia moment. The rain that tell did not penetrate the earth to the depth of aquarterofan inch, _ This place is crowded with youth and beauty from New York; umong others there is one character who, being neither young nor ‘-eautiful, stands out in striking contrastirom the balance—I mean that singular beiog ‘* OLp Reynowps,” the beer-shop man, of New York, who has his locale in this village, aud has bought a beautitul farm here, having made about forty thousand dollars, by seiling beer and welch rarebits for a few ears in a small shanty back of the City Hotel teynolds is a great radical and a great patriot; and commenced keeping the 4th of July early cn the morning of the 3d, and has probably been ** Bachus pleni” ever since. When | saw him ina tavern here, he was loud in his denunciation ot all the New York papers except the “ Evening Post,” and glori- fied immensely the memories ef Tom Paine, Uob- bett, and the late Wm. Leggett, He was particu- larly Joud in hia denunciations of Mr. Greely, Mr. Webb and Mr. Bennett; and threatened to beat all who contradicted him, into such a state that, to use his own ciassic phraseology, “‘when the devil comes to fetch you, he shan’t know whether you're Jews or Turks, if you please, now,d—n ye!” He was es- pecially energetic in his praise ot our friend Tom Bell, of Ann street, and tineatened to beat any man to death who said he wasn’t the best auctioneer in the world. { ventured to ask him the grounds of his antipathy to the three editors mentioned above, and i give you his answer in his own words :—“Gree- ley eats bran bread and drinks cold water, and | despise him—because | go in tor good health (tic) and good beer, (hic,) and plenty or, (hic)—give me some more brandy, (hic.) Itis the most charming spot inthe neighborhood of the city. They sent an invitation to Mr. Bennett to spend some time here, and regret nis absence; but desire me to say they would be glad to see the acting editor, who soabiy officiates fo: him in his absence. I regret [ could only stay here four or five hours, being, as you know, under orders, and «nm reute tor ‘‘all manner of streets” and emg Leigh Hunt so graphically makes his poor pig driver say. Yoam Jonn Jonas, Jr. or New York. Detroit. {Correspondence of the Herald.) Derrorr, June 28, 1843. Emigration to Michigan—Wheat Crops—Generai Cass—His Prospects for the Presidency. J. G. Bawnerr, Esq.— Sir: The emigration from the Hastern States and from Europe, is, I think, greater than for severa! years past—the depression under which the work- ing classes have suffered has caused great numbers tocome West, and companies are very frequently going to Wisconsin, Iowa and Oregon. If these people could see and nderstand the value of the interior of our own State for agricultural purposes, they would not go farther; but it is the policy of the traneportation companies to push the emigrants as far West as possible, as it is more profitable to thoseengaged in that trade. Your readers should know that it is only necessary to ride across our peninsula (which route is as cheap or cheaper than the Lake route) to convince any man of sense of the superior advantages of our soil and climate to any of the Western States, ‘ The Alderman Dalton affair hes blown over, and another haa been elected in his place. Wheat, the grand staple of our State, is selling at about $1 per bushel The crops for the season are in advance of any previous year, and the quantities raised will be immense. : As | presume that your readers will be pleased to know what is doing politically in this part of the Union, I send you the proceedings of a meeting hel! in this city last night for the purpose of promoting the election of General Cass. The meeting bite called by about six hundred of the prominent an active demoerats of the city, and among them Elow Farneworth, Attorney General, Hon. D. Houghton, Pe ee ee eet She eee eee Price Two Cents, and others of our most distinguiched citizens took an active part. Unfortunately the vight was ex- ceedingly unpleasant, which without coubt prevent. ed many from attending—as it was, however, there was no lack of enthusiasm in favor of the aniver- sal favorite of the West. Indeed he 1s constantly re- ceiving accession to his ranks from all parts, and we are confident thet his popularity will ¢qual that of Gen Jackson Youmay think that speak this because Gen.Cass is a citizen ot Michigan true that we feel pride in possessing a man who has done so much in the service of his country, and whose conduct at the surrender of Detroit, (When he broke his sword rather than give it upto the enemy) renti- tles him toa high place in our esteem ; but it is from a more enlarged feeling that hia friends call upon the democracy to support him as the candidate for the presidency. We believe that he is the only man who can unite all parts of the country to secure the tri- umph of democracy and defeat the enemy you could be here, you would not be surprised at the manner in which (write. This feeling isnot confin- ed to the State of Michigan. I believe thet most of the Western States will support him. Mr. Calhoun has but Jittle strength, and although there are many who admire the talents and services of Mr. Van Bu- ren, they cannot forget the terrible defeat o! , nor that he may cauee us to sufter another in 1844. While the friends of the other candidates indulge in. bitter language agains: each other, the advocates of General Cass accord to each of the other gentlemen all the qualities and advantages to which they are justly entitled, and avow their determination tu give to the nominee of the National Convention (who- ever he may be) their ze*lous support: they believe that the prospects of their favorite, cannot be im- roved by attempts to injure the fair fame of others, but rely on the brilliant abilities and the unswerving democracy of their candidates, for success The General has been invited to attend the cele- bration of the opening of the Wabash and Erie Ca- nal, at Fort Wayne, Indiana, and to deliver an ora- tion on the Fourth of July s1 r As we look to the Herald for jinformation on all subjects, we shall feel gratified to know what is thought at the East of Cazes, the New Hampshire boy. Pontiac. Bridgeport, {Correspondence of the Herald.) Bripasrort, July 3d, 1843. Important Trial at New Haven—The Housatonic Railroad—City Bonds— Powers of the Corpora- tion. * James Gorvon Bennett, Esq.— Sm— There is to be a trial before the Supreme Court of this State, which sits at New Haven on Wednes- day and Thursday of this week, of more importance to the people of this city, State, and the United States, than any which has occurred since 1776. It is in relation to certain bonds given by this city for the purpose of aiding in the construction of the Hou- satonic Railroad. [tis contended that the city had no right to subscribe forstock in the first place—that the Corporation had no right to give their bonds for purposes which the citizens now contend were for- eign to the ae alt etd Legislature had no right to make such bonds binding on the city—that there would be as much propriety in taxing our citizens to establish a line of stearm ships between this place and Liverpool, as to build a Railread from here to West Stockbridge. The Court is composed of the Hons. Chiet Justice Williams, Storrs, Waite, Church, and Hinman. _ The counsel on the part of the city—Mesers. Hun- tington, of Norwich, Bissel, of Norwaik, and Loo- mis, mayor of our city On the vart of the bond holders—Meesrs. Baldwin and Hitchcock, of New Haven, and Dutted, of thiscity. The same case was tried in Danbury last week, beiore the same Court, but was not decided in consequence. of the magnitude of the principle to be established, there never having been a case similar to this tried in the United States. ‘The case was opened on Thureday Jast at Danbury, by Mr. Huntington, who spoke five hours in a strain of eloquence and legal learniog un- surpassed by either Clay or Webster. If you would give your readers a rich treat in your Herald, send your John Jones to New Haven on Tuesday, to re- main there unl this case is ended, that he may give a full, able and correct report of their arguments, and the docision—that the people of these Unite States of America may see how far majorities may compel the minority to pay for the wild schemes of a few visionary speculators.
