The watch- fal supervision and unsleeping vigilance of this Board afford the best security the commercial ma rine cagdave for the fidelity of the corps ef pilots under its care. ‘Trrearricats AnD ReLiaton.—At a large meeting of the stogkholders of the Tremont Theatre, on Monday evening, it was voted not to accept the of - fer of the Rev. Metnovist Prorestant Conrenence.—The annu- al Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church commenced its session in this city yesterday torn ing, in the new chureh, ‘at the corner of Aisquith and Pitt streets; Rev. Augustus Webster presiding Upwardsef one hundred ministers and delegates are in attendence. The Conference was engaged djournment yesterday afternoon in the ex- amination of character, which will, we learn, be continued today. Finding the new Church to damp for ae, the Conference appointed a committee to wait upon the Rev. Mr. Breckinridge, and re- quest the use of the lecture room aitached to his charch. This request was instantly granted.— Balt. American, April 6. Onto River.—At Wheeling, on Monday, the Ohio river had twenty-two feet of water in the channel, clear of ice, and falling. R. M. Jounson is a candidate for Congress in the Lexington Distriet, Ky. .Desrrucrive Fire.—We learn from the Clarks- ville, Tenn. Chronicle, that Fielding Willian s had avi ble merchants’ mill burned upon the 15th of March. Loss $16,000. No insurance. Navigation —The Menongahela river is now in fine navigable order—the ice all out of the river, and the water low enough to admit boats under the bridges. Scaacrry or Hay—We hear from various quar- ters of the scarcity of hay, and the loss of cattle in consequence. In Oakland Co , Mich., it is stated that filteen hundred head of cattle have died with in the last two months. In tais county, we believe there is asufficieat quantity of hay to carry our tar- mers through, if the winter ia not protracted too far into the menth of April. In some parts o! Cattarau- gus, we are informed that the crop is exhausted, and many cattle have died. A similarity has befallen Chautauque. The last Fredonia Censor says:—The farmers in the southern part of the county, we learn, are euffering s*verely from the severity of the winter, on account of the scarcity of fodder for their cattle. Grain is now transported from this vicinity for their cattle; and unless the winter soon relaxes its rigor, a great loss of stock must follow. Many farmers are now keeping their cattle alive wnly by cutting down trees for them to browse upon, and still many are dying off. We have heard of one farmer who had lest ten cows and five head of young cut- tle. Hay now bringe $10 a ton, and there is so lit- tle that it will last but a few days longer. Improvement at TH: West.—In default of ap- been by the General Goverament, the inha- itanis of some of the ports on Lake Michigan mani fest a commendable enterprise, by undertaking har- bor improvements on individual account. The Mil- waukie Sentinel states that Tufts, Kendall & Co., of that place, are fecting arrangements tor the im- mediatt construction of a pier from the foot of Hu- ron street, which will project into Lake Michigan nearly 1,000 feet. That paper of the i5:h says ope-" rations nave already commenced. Arrangements are also bring made at Southport to enlarge the fa- cilities of the pier at that place for receiving and discharging freight from steamboats and vessels the coming season. enema N2 CF: her-tofore existing between aN Esl ney, day dissolved.
