Curious Movewents in Pennsylvania—Contest for State Printer in Harrisburg—Scenea of Albany over again—Henry Clay’s Prospects Rising. Dear Bennett :— This city, and the! Legislature ‘which is now in session, has been in the greatest excitement in con- sequence of the law having passed, electing a State Printer for three years, to do all the printing of the Government. I will subjoin a history of the case, as it came to my knowledge. Since my arrival, the excitement has grown out of the circumstance that the three leading Demo- cratic papers, to wit, the Reporter, Keystone, and Gazette, had combined their interests, united their strength, and supposed their election eure, with- out opposition. But the editor of the Reporter, Sohn H. Dimock, not having been included in the arrangement, came out as an “ independent candi- date,” and before any one was aware of his move- ments, managed his card with such adroitnees and success, that he drew one-half of the Vemocratic members into his support. From these he extorted peda to refuse to go into a caucus, and vote for im in convention. He had managed tesecure the entire Clay Whig vote, and up to one day previous to the time fixed for the election, his movements were not discovered bythe combined establishments, It was at last discovered that he had taken the field, and no sooner wasit known than the mest deter- mined effort was made to crush him. He was thrust out of his situation as editor of the Reporter, and every species of falsehood was put in circula- tion against him. The Buchanan men swore he was pledged to Tyler—the Johnson men ewore he was pledged to Buchanan—the Anti-Porter men swore he was leagued with the Governor, and thus single- handed, without a press with which to sustain himself and friends, he boldly and fearlessly met the fierce and vindictive assaults of ihoee whowere com- bined against him. He contrived to foment jealou- siesand divisions among his enemies—drew his own friends more closely around him, and although se- veral of his friends deserted nim, having been bribed or frightened away, he still wae formidable. At length, the Speaker of the House deserted to the enemy, having been promised the next Governor- ship, as iseaid, and with him, went several more. At last, acaucus was held, and Bratton, one of the combination, was nominated, there being but 42 out of 80 members in caucus. Seeing his case grow- ing desperate, Limock managed to enlist the Gover- nor and his friends on his side. But here he met another obstacle. Several democrats, and many whigs, refused to join the Governor’ friends, ing all was not right. But he succeeded in uniting all the discordant materials of which his party was composed, and when the Legislature assem- bled in Convention, on Monday last, the vote stood, on second ballot— Pro passe! all Northwest corner of Fulton and Nassau streets. | Sy Srrevienced mateys who will make every exertien 1 giv ‘They will at all times be towed up and reTor ov THE HraaLy EotapuisHMEnt, Xwly coppered and put in splendid order, with accommodations comfort. ‘They are commanded up and conducted. THE MEETING. ‘The meeting was called to order by E. B. Wheeler, Esq., who nominated Gen. E. A. Tueucer, for President pro tem, This motion was opposed by Mr. Warson—He was in favor of open nominations. He wanted all the otficerd appointed by the meeting— packed committees were obnoxious to him. He moved that the Hon. Josernt Sraono be the regular presiding officer of the meeting. Mr. Bassett— I second that motion. Let the officers be appointed by the meeting. ‘I’his istrue democracy. I hope the motion will prevail "Phe motion was voted down by a large majority, and Gen. Theller took the chair. A committee of seven was then appointed to nominate officers for the meeting, and after a short absence they came in, and made the follow ing report : ion. Joseph Sibley, President ; George Mosier, (Whig) Dr. Smyles, Loco) Peter Pricé, (Whig) Giles Wolden, (Gere) Jobn Cunningham, (Loco) L. Beaedict (Whig) jos. Strong, (Tyler) Jos. On motion of John David Walsh, a committee of seven, consisting of 8. G. An (P.M.) A. H. Jones, Dr. 8myles, John Hayes, E A. and John D. Walsh, was appointed to report reso- lutions. Meanwhile the most prodigious efforts were made to defeat Dimock. Every press in the city combined against him, eave the Intelligencer, the Clay paper. Fenn, of the Telegravh, a Scott paper, sent to Lan- caster for Thaddeus Stevens, the “great unchained,” to come up to the aid of Bratton. Bribery and cor- ruption stalked abroad through the city and the le- islative halls; thousands of dollars were bid for a lew anti-masonic votes by Bratton; Stevens moved through the halls from morn to night, and then cau- cussed in his room. Members sold their votes to se- cure local bills ; others were drawn away by flatte- ry, threats, coaxing or briberv; inshort, heaven and earth seem to have been moved to secure the de- feat of Dimock. But he has played his game with astonishing gkill and success. Although not 28 years old, as I am informed, he haa shown himself a match, and more than a match for Stevens and _ all others who are combined against him. Albeit Ste- vens succeeded in getting from him 8 or 10 anti-ma- sonic votes which were cast for Bratton, Dimock on the other hand, drew away an equal number of the democrats who had formerly voted for Bratton. And so the contest wage j, until to-day at 12 o’clock, when the Legislature again assembled in convention and [ea to ballot for State printer—the vote stood— EXPRESS.
