News of all Sorts. From Pana.—We are indebted to the Supercargo of the Rocket, arrived on Thursday, trom Para, for the following items of news :—-The British steam frigate Growler was at Para on the 20th Nov. from Rio de Janeiro, having been ashore on the rocks in the river, where she laid two days, but by hghtening was got off with little damage. The German Prince Alderbrito and suite came in the steamer. He was received in Para in great style by the authoriti and great attention was also shown to him by the commanders of the French corvette Berquru and brig of war Bologne. ‘The Prince is a suitor for the hand of the Princess Donna Janairio, sister of Don Pedro II., Emperor of Brazil, and he is cousin to Albert. He is on a tour through the Brazils. mer proceeds to Maranham for coals, and then will return to Para, where the Prince will re- ang go to Bahia, and thence to Lisbon.— » French corvette Berquru in going from Para to Cayanne, lost her anchors at the mouth of the river and was obliged to return on the 17th Nov. Not being able to procure anchors at Para, the brig was dispatched to Cayanne for them, and the corvette awaits her return.—Rhode Islander Dec. 17. "Navy Iyrecuicence.—Navy Orpers.—Lieut Thomas J. Arremerep Munper ann Surcipg.—On Friday morning about three o'clock, a Mrs. Lynch, the wite of a weaver residing in Black Horse alley, made an attempt while in bed to cut her husband’: throat. By some means he escaped without serious injury and ran down stairs, when it appears she made an attempt upon her own life, by inflicting a severe gash across her neck nearly severing the wind pipe. She was conveyed to the Moyamen- sing Alms House’ whe: ie lies in a dangerous state alousy is said to be the cause ofthe acts,— Philadelphia Amervcan. Sreamer Oscrona.—This splendid boat, intended to ply between this place and Washington City, ar- rived here yesterday morning, from New York.— She left New York on Monday last, and was obliged by the severity of the weather to put into Absecom, where she was detained until Thursday morning, making her run in less than 22 hours; the wind blowing very fresh during the passage —Norfolx Beacon, Dec. 17. Mors Swinpit —A man calling himself P. P. Hutchinson, a sub-contractor for the Arsenal at Washington, and Fortress Monroe, and engaged largely in the purchase of timber, has turned out to be a swindler. For the last six months, he has extended his credit, both in Cambridge, Md., and in the City of Baltimore, to_a very considerable amount; and after drawing from the Department at Washington from seven to ten thousand dol- lars, the entire amount due him, he decamped on the 5th instant, leaving all his creditors unpaid, since which nothing has been heard of him.— This villain, from appearance, is aged about thirty, over six feet high, rather slender, thin y aged, black hair and whiskers, and articulates very indistinctly, and says he served his time at the Navy Yard, Brooklyn, and was married at Bangor, Maine When he lett, he had on a handsome black frock coat, not paid tor, and a drab overcoat. He wore ilso.a heavily jewelled gold watch and massive gold chain and key, all enurely new, Western Rivers.—The river began to rise last and there is now from 20 to 30 feet in the annel. The last boats through from St. Louis report also a rise in the Mississippi, All the tributa- ty streams above and below Cincinnati are running out fast, which will keep the river at a good stage perhaps through the winter, unless we have a very severe change in the weather. The St. Louis Re- publican of the 8th says, “ yesterday the rain fell du- ring nearly the whole day.” The river is rising fast, and had risen full 18 inches last evening. From all appearances we expect high water, and should this expectation be realized, it is prebable that it will not closed during the winter.” The Burlington, I. T., Hawk Eye says, that “over 100 flat boats were caught in the ice above that place. Many of them had begun to load before the sudden change in the weather.—Cincinnati Gazette, Dec. 14. Cumpertanp River.—At the latest dates there were three feet three inches water on the shoals, and the river rising. Crm. Con. 1n Hory Lirr.—A case of Bastardly was tried by the Court of Common Pleas the ether day, wherein Mary Whitton was plaintiff and Elder Charles Valentine defendant. From the testimony in the case, it appeared that the plaintiff had resided in this county since 1839; that she was employed to nurse the defendant ife, during the illness of which she died; that he seduced her, andin the year 1841 she became the dishonored mother of one of his illegitimate offspring. She was never married. She likewise testified, that he offered to give her money for the purpose of procuring the premature destruction of the expected reward of his crime The proposition, it seems, was not complied with ; and consequently, ulterior results having rendered necessary the interposition of the law in behalf of the plaintiff, Elder Valentine was finally arraigned as above intimated; and after the evidence pro and con. had been heard, the case was submitted to the jury without argument. ‘The jury found the defen- dant “Guilty”—and the Court assessed the damages at five hundred dollars. —Cin, Message. Lary Os..—The Cincinnati Gazette states that this manufacture, so important to the west, is rapid- ly extending. Two more factories have just been established in Cincinnati, making five in all, which manufacture collectively several thousand gallons daily. We notice also, that the business is estab- lished at Burlington, lowa, Hannibal, Mo., Chica- go, lll., and a dozen other places. The effect of all this will be to reduce the price of alloils, and in- crease the farmer’s profits in raising hogs. Woman's Sympatny.—The New Haven Herald relates that as a runaway horse, dragging a wagon with a young Jad in it, was suddenly breught up with a crash in the streets of that town, but fortu- nately. without injury to the boy, an old lady in great agitation iollawed in pursuit of the wagon. “* Mother, mother,” exclaimed her daughter, “‘where are you going?’ Dont’'t get into the crowd ; you can’t do him any good.” Seeing her agitation, a lady who happened to be passing at the moment kindly inquired, “ Is he your son?” “Oh no,” replied the good old matron, “ but he is some- body’s son.”* Hisroricat, Porrt.—Bancroft, in a recent lecture in Boston, on the Pattleof Bunker's Hill, stated that after much research, he had arrived at the conclu- sion that Col. Prescott, not General Putnam was the commander. That Putnam left the lines early in the day for the purpose of procuring reinforcements, and did not return until late in the day, when he came without them, and then nothing saved him from a reprimand from General Washington, but the fact that he wasnot i command during the day. ABUNDANCE IN tHe Weet.—In Coshocton County, Ohio, Oats are selling at 10 cents per bushel; Corn at 12{ cents; Wheat at 40 cents; and Hogs and Beet Cattle at one dollar per hundred pounds.
