The Weather—Judge Hophinson's Funeral—A New Paper to Support Repudiation—The Bank Case— Stocks, §c.. What a glorions day we have here, June,in bright- ness, warmth and gaiety rarely if ever surpassed it. Our streets have ail day been filled with an ar- ray of the most beautiful ‘women and the most stu pid dandies that the world ever saw. O! what a climate this is. Who would sigh for Italy under sueh asun, and amii so mue). sprightly loveliness as is seen in the bright eyes and glowing cheeks of our ladies. But enough of this. Judge Hopkinsen was buried this morning, and business both im court and out is progressing as usual. I had thouzht that the Courts would at least have postponed business until to-morrow. There are various small movements on foot te se- eure his vacated place, but they are connected with sueh men, that I am sure, John Tyler will not 4isten to them for a moment. The repudiators here,as they are termed, are about to make a bold stand in behalf of the principles tha, they have avowed, by establishing a paper devoted exclusively to the promulgation of the peculiar te- nets which they are knewn (o hold on the subject. The debt of the State, they say, was unconstitutional- dy contracted, and justice to the wronged tax-payers requires that its payment should be strenuously resisted. They number a pretty strong, and what is more, an incre ng ty. State Fives improved to-day; in other stocks ‘ne material change. Four o’Clock, P. M. On the 29ta March, 1839, Mr. Biddle resigned his conn-etion with the Bank —his somewhat noted leiter resigning his place was read, and clashed somewhat gratingly with subsequent facts; und in fulsome falsehood was only equalled by the resolution offered immediately afterwards by Mr. J. it. Ingersoll. During the reading of these papers, an evident titter was ob- servable throughout the touse. Mr. Dunlap re- signed his offiee of Dircetor, 7tn April, 1841. The Gernt Bank first suspended 10th or llth May, , at half-past seven o’clock in the morning. All, or nearly all, the effects passed uaderthe assignments. Atthe Merchants’ Exchange there were sales by auction of $99,0000f the 6 per cent bonds of the ‘State of Illinois, payable in 1865. These bonds area part ofthose pledged by the Commissioner,Mr. Whiteside, with Stebbins and M’Allister, to raise money forthe payment of the July interest on the State debt of Illinois, The contract under which they were issued, it will be remembered, was pronounced null and void by tho Commissioner, and the public were cautioned not to purchase. {The sales were, however, made at 17} a 183, without the coupons. The purchasers were for the most part those who had previously loaned money on them, and the sale was made for the purpose of helding the borrowers for the balance. The State will ne dowbt ultimately reimburse as much as they have received on the bonds. The Firemen’s Insurance {Company has declared a dividend of 3} per cent for the last ‘six months. Capital $100,000. Such an attempt would be madness in the present state ofthe markets. The general causes of the failure of the Buffalo banks, was the redundancy of Bank capital. The immediate causes were the necessities of the specu- lators, who were brought into being by that redun- dancy. A still greater reduction jin capital must yet be effected in this state before the remainder will be profita- bly, or even safely invested. Frederick E. Whiting, the ex-Cashier of the Gallipo- lis Bank, has broken jail. The sheriff and prosecuting attorney of Gallia county have offered $200 for his ap. prehension. The SupremeCoart of Ohio have set Far- rington, the President, ut liberty, or rather granted him anew trial. In an other column will be found the details of a popu: lar commotion in Cincinnati, Ohio, having for its objec- the subversion of the numerous shinplaster shops in that city, and the dispefsion of the gangs of utterers of frau. dulent paper, under the cloak of being brekers and agents for Banks. The people of Ohio have for several years been the prey of swindling bankers from this Stute, Michigan and some of their own raising. These people have followed “humbly in the footsteps” of the great Philadelphia financiers, and likethem have hith- erto escaped the vengeance of the law. The people finding that both the laws and the Legislatures are pow: erless against the “chartered privileges” of corporate bankers, and being unable any longer to endure the op- pression of an irredeemable paper currency, have been aroused to acts of violence, which even under these cir- cumstances are scarcely to be palliated. The immedi- ate cause of the outbreak was the publication of the fol- lowing card. Muati Exroatina Company, Monday Evening, January 10, 1842.” The Directors of this Bank are compelled to announce their inability any longer to redeem the issues ef tho Company. They have assumed this painful alternative only after all expedients to sustain the Bauk have failed, and their united exertions have been fruitless to obtain the useful means. They deem a short review of the operations of the Bank due to the public, as well as to the Stockholders, which they therefore subjoin :— In May, 1837, when the Bank came into the hands of its present Managers, it had a current debt of $615,728 17, and a circulation of $390,232. Of the debt, $139,906 33, was due at Conneaut, besides abont $50,000 by debtors in Cleveland and vicinity. Of the circulation, $199,800 was payable atthe Branch. This circulation of the Branch has been reduced to less than $1,300 by the Bank here while the debt onthe Lake shore remain at an amount rising $100.00, more than enough to pay all the liabili- ties of the Bank, without touching the Cincinnati por- etait will be jh f us, it wil seen, the means of the Com have heen devoted to the extinguishment of the Brant circu lation, in addition to that payable in Cincinnati, while. the Branch debt, although considered good, has always. been dead weight. ‘The circulation of this Bank has not, since 1839, been greater than the capital of this bank warranted, and might in ordinary times have been sustained without difficulty. Frem July 1, 184l,to the present time, (six months) the cirenlation has decreased upwards of $70 000, and is yet recurring rapidly Besides the securites of fered to note-holders in the debts due the bank, the directors solicit attention to the item of real eat: This consists of property teken at fair Lane for Bu talo. How strikingly illustrative of the progress of events are the arraignments of the officers of the late National Bank be- fore the Philadelphia courts of justice. But afew years since, the President of that institution on a visit to New York, made almost aftriumphsl march through Wali Street, amidst the adulation of the mob that crowded around him hat in hand, striving to do homage to the * regulator” of all the pecuniary difficulties of the coun try. At that time the Wall street Courier, in terms of rejoicing, published the fact that the difficulties were over, because the President of the United States Bank had declared in Wall street to gaping crowds,“ that there was no trouble) that the United States Bank could not remedy.” That institution with its $100,000,000 of as: ‘sests has now melted into thin air,and with it the worldly substance of thousands of helpless beings who are sink: ing into the grave in poverty and misery on both sides of the Atlantic, while the man who made that vaunting boast in Wall street is orrainged before a court of jus: tice on a conspiracy to defraud, and yet, in the face of this fearful revolution people talk of a restoration of con- fidence and a revival of stock credits. 1000 O} 008 Mlinois bonds 3000 do othw do ‘08 do thw 1 do & #60 1000 Todianastlg bonds 32 Tadiana dof bods #t0 2000 do do 1 do 26 do Mechs Bk do nm lo Fulton Bk 115,000 do 60 21 «= -28 do State Bk 1000 do sthw 22 40 doGreenwich Ins 10.000 do sthw 20 50 do Harlem do #15 22 390 do do do #30 21t 50 do do #30 a thw 22¢ 150 do do thw 10 shas Centon 18) 500 do do bo 50 do #60 18} 109 do do. 530 cd * Bk Commerce 87 do thw 50 do scrip 930 86) do bthw do do 1% do tudo Del & Had = b60 92 0 doPatersou R860 $15de do 60 91 do 860 lo io 0 2% do do 860 at do Indiada bonds 560 2) & Hud Mndy 93) fie 23 do do tw 94 10 Iuois 6's 5¢ do Harlem Foreign Markets.
