Colt, the teacher of book-keeping, was to be called on yesterday morning, at half past 10 o’clock, in the Court of Oyer and Terminer, before Judge Kent, long before that hour every avenue to the Court room was crowded with persons of all classes and ages, eager to obtain admittance. Colt was taken into the room privately at quite an early hour, in the custody of A. M. C. Smith, and placed in the corner of the room, on the left hand side of the Judge’s seat. The doors were then opened, and the large space allotted for the specti- tors was filled in three or four minutes, 20 great wes the anxiety to see and hear this most extraordinary trial. The officers in attendance preserved mostad- mirable order; they kept the place within the bar entirely clear from ever one, except the reporters of the daily papers, the witnesses, and members of the ‘0., Li ool, bar. The doors were then closed, and hundreds ‘a cents per single | waited and clamored outeide, unable to obtain ad- ations. Whilst in the Park, there were also hun- dseds waiting to catch a sight of Colcor Mrs. Adams, or any of the witnesses. In fact there has not been ersal and terrible excitement ia this city since the trial of Robinson. Colt himself looked more collected, calm, and in better health than we have seen him enjoy since his arrest. He sat with his back to the audience, con- versing freely with his brother, and at intervals reading the “Herald.” Officer Smith, at one time approached him, and said, ‘‘Have you seen the Sun, Mr. Colt ?” He replied very calmly and cheer- fully, “No, I have not, but I should like to.” Upon which, Smith handed him that paper. His brether seemed a good deal affected, but the only evidence of mental agony about Colt, was seenin a restless ralling of the eye, and a convulsive twitching of the mouth. Precisely at halt-past ten o’clock, Judge Kent en- tered the room and took his seat. The Circuit Court “iii | was then opened. Before this, Dudley Selden, Mr. Emmett, and John A. Morri!l were in attendance as Colt’s Counsel; and Mr. James Sintth as asso- ciate of the District Attorney, Mr. Whiting. J. G. Bennerr, Ese. :— Your correspondent in this Vicinity, anxious to sustain the deservedly high {character of your Journal for geueral information jon subjects of a public nature, hastens to announce the result of Jesterday’s election im Pittsburgh and Allegheny cities, for the office of Municiple Chief Magis- trates. The anti-masons and whigs, by union, have triumphed in carrying their cand late, Alexander Hay. The citizen ticket, with Mr. Shina’s name, had a respectable yote. The loco-foco Catho- lic’s who had a candidate in}the field named P. McKenna, came out, to use an elegant expression, at the “little end of the horn.” In Allegheny city, WW. B. Foster, a war federalist and contractor, but a recently “dyed in the wool” demecrat, has succeeded; yet some desirous forthe election of another, say the vote is a tie. A refractory babbler, discarded from the Metho- dist connection, is holding forth in Pittsburgh, as a lecturer upon Abolition. I have listened to one ot his harraagues by request; and little did I think, until that occasion, there was so much patient ene durance in my gizzard. This fellow is grossly igno- rant, and therefore wicked in language. He recom- mended pretection and comfort to runs way slaves; and said every bondservant ought to male the effort to free himself; but whether by{means of his legs or the Bowie-knife, no hearer could determine. The name of the incendiary is Smith. Akin to this fana- tic, isa prophet,or sen of a prephe’,‘rom the tribe of Morman, who is doing a “pretty good business” in gulling the simples aronnd. He has annourced him- self as one of the favored few, who, with Joe Smit saw the eaee of the Lord, and was rebuked by a voice from Heaven, for doubting the fact that ball- toads were not ample and authentic records of the genuineness of the Morman bible. This herald of modern Jewish and Christian faith, is satisfied, that me Noah hgs no legal or egitable claim upon Hebrew blood. The abortive Long Island specula- tion only proves that false Jews aud fale prophets will continue to annoy the chosen few under the banner of the immortal Joe Smith. Conneeted with t! is information, I am constrained from pious motives to state that Mr. Van Amring, a lawyer of no mean repute in these parts, has published a religious pamphlet, uttempt- ing to reason, under peculiar rules of Jogic, that man is physiologically, anatomically and byperbolically composed ef body, soul, spirit anu gampti Expectation runs high as to the future course of this great, glorious epee mn. If he remain at the bar, the world and the devil may avercome the soul, body and spirit—and then how awful the responsi- bility of the New Jerusalamite ! The Hon. Harman Denny has returned from Washington city, and gives his opinion freely of the shaweful injastice done to Mr. Secretary For- ward, by a portion of the federal press,in attributing his incomparable report to Mr. Webster. Inevery respcet, his mind is neither less strong nor les formed than that of Mr. Webster. Mr. Forward, from ‘the bar to the cabinet, will prove himself equal to amy man in the Union; and this is the opinion of the best read lawyers in Penns, |vania. “The devil among the lawyers” is x comedy now in rehearsal about the new court house.— For about three weeks last past, the Co of Oyerand Terminer has been hep trying about as many cases as Judge Kent would rattle throu gh in three days; and as Bstte business thus suffers, there is a cry for another law Judge to * belp,” as Mra. This match has crea- ted more interest ainong the faney than any that has ever been pitched in this country. The amount of stakes between them, though only $300 a side, i backed by upwards of $10,000 ia side betts. Sulli- van carries the odds in luis favor at present, although Secor is readily backed at $50 to 100. The latter is about 35 pounds bette: by weivht thau Sullivan, and bears himself in fiae order Sailivan lias gréat activity, endurance and science, while Secor has great strength, weight and skill; therefore, a better match could not be made up. Sullivan is training at Williameburgh, L. I., and Secor at East Chester. The former weighed 158 pounds on Saturday, the latter 194. They are both young men, Secor 26, Sullivan 25, and are better matched, with the excep- tion of weight, than any two ,that have come to- gether for years. The meeting will not take plece in this State, and two steamboats have already been chartered to convey the friends of each party to the place selected to decide who is the best man. Cuaner or Gkaxp Lanceny.—Dr. Samuel Heine of No, 418 Broadway, appeared before the Lower Police yesterday morning, and entered a complaint against an Irish woman who has been residing with him for the last year, named Sarah Harris, for steal- ing $195, on Sunday evening. The particulars were thet this woman who has been residing with him as a domestic, has also been uzed for other purposes, and now has in her possession a child five weeks old, the fruits of such illicit intercourse. On Sunday night the Doctor had a slight quarrel with her and she in revenge opened one of his sideboard drawers, took the above amount, and fled to the adjoining house, occupied by John B. Liddle. The Doctor caused Mr. Liddle to be arrested for receiving the money, but finding that he was liable to falee impri- sooment, consented to hisdisebarge. Upon search- ing Mr Liddle’s premises the money was found be- hind the street door, tied up in a little bag where it had been placed by the woman that took it. Upon the appearance of the mother of the child in the Po- lice Office yesterday morning the Doctor's heart re- lented, and after stating that he intended to take care of the child, although he should not the mother, he conclnded noe to prosecute the case if he could getthe money Thns the matter stands at present, and as we no- derstand the Commissioners of the Alms House have taken the case together with the child in hand, we presume the mother will obtain redress for her injuries. Sroue a san or Gorv.—Mr. John Myers, of No. 19 Maiden Lane, while on a visit to one of his friends at No. 6 Murray strert,on Sunday afternoon, stepped out of the house a few minutes, leaving his over-coat on a chair. After returning and depart- ing from the house, he discovered that # bar of gold va)ned at ey watch worth $42.50 and three gold rings valued at $1 each, had been stolen from one of the ae of the coat. Suspicion inme- diately settled upon a German servant girl named Margaretta Stinger, who resided in the family ; and officer Stokely being sent for, the stolea property was found stowed away in her trunk. When it was proposed to search her trunk she bounced upon it, and declared herself hostile to any entrance into her private luggage She gave Stokely several severe hugs before he could succeed in opening the article containing the lost treasure. and after the property was restored the way she talked German, in selt defence, was a caution to all the high and low Dutchmen on Manhattan Island.
