PHILADELPHIA, Ofo. 22 Sunday laft Capt. Dingee arrived here from Jamaica. On the 6th inft. he met with a violent gale of wind off of Cape Hatteras, on which his fhip was thrown on her beam ends, which oblig’d him to throw overboard fome of his guns, and he received confiderable damage in his cargo. On the 13th he fpoke with Capt. Fofter in a fnow from Hull for Virginia, which had loft her mafls in the fame gale, and had taken up Capt. Brown, and his crew, that belonged toa fchooner from North- Carolina to New York, which foundered at fea. The fame day Capt. Charles Stewart aifo ceme up from Jsmaica. The 16th he fpoke with Capt. George Evars, in the brig America beund to New York from Jamaica, in great diftrefs,having on the 8clrof this month been in afevere ftorm, in which he fhifted his hold, and the vell 1 overfet, but, by cutting away his mainmaft, Y fhe righted again ; however, fhe afterwards loft her other o fi&fl:, bowfprit, head, and every thing on deck. Satarday laft an Ex ref: came to Town from Crown- Point, which he left on Monday ; —and by him we hear of the fafe Arrival of General AMHERST at that Place, in good Health from Quebec, on his Way hither. The Colony of Virginia is'allow’d the Sum of £.32, 268 19 o, out of the 50,000, granted by Parliament, for the Ufe of the Southera Colonies : —and the fur ther Sum of £.20, 526, out of the zeo,000, granted for the Ufz of the Colonies in general, for the Services by them refpectively performed in the year 1758 : —And their Agent has received faid Sums from the Exchequer. By a genileman from Philadelphia we are informed, that John Bruleman, who was exscuted there on the 8:h Inftant, for the Murder of Mr. Scull, as mentioned in a former paper, was by Trade a filverfmith ; which bufinefs he left and wentintothe army, where he was an officer in the Royal American regiment ; but was difcharged on being detedted in counterfeiting. or ut- tering counterfeit money : He then returned to Philadel- phia, and growing infupportable to himfelf, and yet being unwiliing to put an end to his own life, he de- termined upon the commiflion of fome crime, for which he might get hang’d by-the law. Having formed this defign, he loaded his gun with 2 brace of balls, and afk’d his landlord to goa thooting with bim, intending to murder him before his return, but his landlord not choofing to go, efcaped the danger. He then went out alone, and on the way met a man, whom he was about to kill, but recolle&ing that there were no witnefles to prove him guilty, he let the man pals. He then went to & publick houfe, where he drank fome Liquor, and hear- ing people at play at billiards, in & room above ftairs ; he went up and fat with them, and was talkative, faceti- ous, and {eemingly good humour’d ; after {ome time, be called to the landlord, and defired him to hand up the gun. Mr. Scull, who was at play, having ftruck his antagonifl’s balls into one of the pockets, Bruleman faid to him,—* Sir you are a good marks man, —and now L'l fhow you a fine ftroke :” He immediately levell’d his piece, and took aim at Mr. Scull, ( who imagined him in jeft ) and fhot both the balls through his body. —— He thea went up to Mr. Scull ( who did not expire nor lofe his fenfes, till a confiderable time - after ) and f2id to him,—* Sir, I had no malice nor « [1] will againft you, for I never faw you before, but « T was determin’d to kill lome body, that T might be ¢ hang’d, and you happen to be the man, and asyou are ¢ very likely young man, I am very forry for your < misfortune,”—Mr. Scull had time to fend for his Friends, and make his will. He forgave his murderer, and if it could be done, defired he might be pardon’d. We hear likewife from Philadelphia, that apother tragical accident has heppen’d there laft week, viz. A Gentleman difapproved of the addreflcs of a young Gentleman to his Daughter, and forbid him his houle ; but the young lady favoured her lover, and agreed to ride out with him in & chair, by ftealth. While they were out her Father got notice of the affair, walk'd out with his gun, and conceal’d himfelf on the road where he expeéled them to return: According to his expedt- aticn, the chair with the two young perfons appeai’d, and he fir'd at the young man, who expired inftantly. Bapt, Ryder, from New Providence, acquaints us, That the Captain of & Ship from Glafgow to Virginia, who had been 8 Weeks from Port, was fpoke with, who informed, that a Fleet, confiting of 17 Ships of the Line, &c. lay ready to fail for the Weft Iadics to affit his Majefty’s Ships under Commodore Douglafs, in reducing Martineco. On Friday night laft, a fform at E. and S. E. occa- fioned the higheft tide known in the memory of man. Tow’d in afloop from Crrolina, which had loft her bow(prit in the gale on the 6:h of O&aber. The King George met with feversl others who had received more or lefs damage during the violent gale of _wind between the 6th & 10th of October. On Monday laft the houfe of Robert Smith and Oliver Smith, his fon, of Dedham, was confumed by fire, together with moft of the houfhold furniture, and wearing apparel of both families ; as alfo near 100 bufhels of grain, a quantity of cyder, butter, cheele, &c. The fire was fuppoled to proceed from lome dafelt in the Oven. We hear from Calco Bay, that a few daysagoa man in crofling the water in a canoe, which he had over load- ed with ftones, it funk at a {mall diftance from his houfe, and in fight of his family, and he was drowned ; leav- ing a widow and j children. Laft Friday afternoon, a boy about 3 years old, fon ot one Appleten, fell out of a chamber window at the head of the long wharf, "by which accident his feull was [0 much fraCtered that he died the fame night. By Capt. Legget, who arrived here laft Satyrday in 8 days fiom Anmpolis-Royll, we are informed, that the Captains Rogers and Cobb arrived. there {afe about a fortnight paft, with a number of inhabitants and effe&ts from thele parts : That he has been at moit of the fettlements in Nova-Scotia the fummer paft, which go on very faft ; and the people are extremely well pleafed with the'land, are quite healthy and in high {pirits. . : Saturdey laft Capt.
