\ ( N e 72 L ' A . i ) ) ¥ * FRIDAY, May 23. 1760 THE . (New-Hampfhire Gonzaining the Frefbeffi Advices BerL1y, (Capital of the King of Pruffis’s Dominions) 25. HE laft Advacegfrom our Armies are far from being favourable : His Mojelty hss juft received two fevere Checks. A Pruffian General, who had encamp- ed near Torgau has been taken Prifo- : ner of War by the Aultrians. No Particulars are given of this A&ion, excep: that the | whole Corps, amounting to 4 or 500 Men, fhared the Fate of their Leader. On thes other Hand, 2 Body of Ruflians having edvanced into Pomarania; bad fuddenly turned fhort towards Schwedtx, from whence they carried off the Margrave Prifoner, and fome of his People. Itisallo faid that they madea Prifoner on the Occafion of the Prince of Wirtem- berg, who went there for the Recovery of his Health, and the lofs of whom is greatly regreted. Thele Things are looked upon by many as a bad Omen for the enfuing Campaign ; the opening of which is not very diftant, almoft all the Recruits having joined the' Army, as well as the Military Stores fent from our Arfenal. ROME, ( the Capital of the Pope’s Territories ) Feb. 9. The 6thand 7th Inflant, two Ships arrived ‘2t Civita Vecchia full of Portugueze Fefuits. The firft bad 220 on board, and the other 117. We are told thereis another Veflel at Sea, which is bringing over 1 50 more Members of that Saciety. ' ; February ‘\\.‘ \t'flrtber Advices by the laff Packet arrived at NewYork. Vienna, Feb. 11. The Military Conferences go o# - at Court in aManner that feers: to demonfirate the Con- tinuance of the War with Vigours but notwithffanding 1his, many Beople think a Peace will be concluded 5 one of our Allies, baving, in Effed, declared, that fhe is 7o longer in a Condition to fupport ber Engagements. Two of eur Generals are dead at Drefdes 5 15,000 men are inthe Holpital; and if, as fime [uppofe, we are obliged to take the Field againft Infidels, by that time we bave fettled Matrers with our Neighbours, .the Taxes already [everely felt, will be increafed. Paxis, Feb. 26. We kuow rot what to think of Peace. For a Fortnight paft it was looked upon as 2 T'hing concluded, bu for three or four Days the Talk on this Head is much aliered. It is faid the Repre- fentations of the Court of Vienna have defeated the Negociations that were begun. We cannot pefitively sffirm this for Truth, but carries with it great Proba- bility, fince nothing is talked of at prefent but 2 vigo- rcus Profecution of the War. The Troops that were lately deftin’d to.reinforce our Troops in Germany did not exceed 20,000 Men ; but it is now {aid they will amount to 40,c00, in Confequence of the Repre- fentations of the Duke de Choileul, who is the faft Friend of the Marfhal de Broglio. : Paris, Feb. 29. A particalar Affair engroffes all Converfation here, which is, an Attempt made by a Perfon belonging to the Navy-Office, to cut his own T hroat, immediately on reading a Letier which ke bad received. He is atcufed of communicating to a Brother in Londom, all that paffed in Conncil. He is not dead the Wound, and many People imagine they foall get of M. Conflans’s of Srom bim fume Infight into the Caufes Dijafler. { : Great Glogau, (in Silefia) Feb. 16, The Ruflians continue to make great movements, but we carnot et penetrate their real defigns, However, our au- gult Monarch has taken proper meafures for {ecuring thisProvince and the New Marche, from any invafion during the remainder of this winter, and his Mejelty reckons to Lave in the {pring armies namerous enough to make head on every fide againft his enemies. Panis, Feb. 15, A4 8hip lately arrived at Marfe: les Srom the Levant, bas bro't ddvice, tbat the Town of Safat, in Palefline, and Jeveral adjacent Villages, bave been fwallowed up by an Earthquake. That Town, swbich is fuppoled to be the ancient Bethula, was fituated on a Mouutain near the Sea, between Sayd and St. Jobn & Acre. It was miuch revered by the Jews, many of whom ufed to repair thither from all Paris of the World, in order to endtheir Daysin the Land of their Ancefbor:. Paris, Feb. 22. 'The'two regiments of French aid Swifs guards received orders the 1gthinflant, to hold themfelves in readine(s to march by the begin- ning of next month for the Lower Rhine. It istho’t ey are to be employed in Marfhal Broglio’s army. Notwithftanding the feveral checks the French have met with at fea laft year, we are affured that our embarkation will cake place fooner thaa is imagin- ed ; but the command of the fleet is not deftined for M. Conflans : this nobleman is very feldom feen at couit. Some pretend M. de Herouville is appointed to the tafk of retrieving the honour of the French flag. " Couriers were . never fo frequent as at this time, fcarce & day pafling without the arrival of one €ither from Peterfburgh or Vienna ; but very litle tran(- pires of their dilpatches. We koow, however, that they relate to the overtures of peace made by England and Pruffis, and that both the Emprelles ablolutely perfilt on the neceffity of making? ancther campaign. 10 NA D N March 6. Letters from Naples of the 14th ult. give an accoennt that Mount Vefavius had broke oat again; and two Englith noblemen and two other foreigners goixé too near to -exarainc the openings of the Volcane, had like to have piid gearly ior their i One of them + narrgwly efcaped perifhing in the burning bitumen, into which he flipped above the knees ;. but having immsciate afhitance, he was got out, and only srribly buarnt his legs. The feet of the threcallo pretty much burnt. March 8. The French courr, it is faidy have ‘re{olved to bring M. Conflans, and the commanding officer under whofe orders the fhips ensered the river Villajne, to'a court martial 3 in order to which, the former is under mirelt, and the latter is in prifon. Each has a party at court, and the latter is ftrongly {upported by the feamen. Ordecs are given for near twenty independent companies of foot to be raifed with the greatelt expeditions. We hear that Capt. Elliot, for his gallant beha- viour in taking of the Marfhal Bellei{le privateer, will be promoted to the command of a 6o gun fhip. Itis now confidently afferted that Admiral Saunders will not fail to the Eaft Indies to relieve Ad. Pocock, as was imagin’d 5 but will very fhortly take upon him the command of a powerful fleet for the Balick, in order to make a diverfion, in favour of the King of Pruffis; agsinit the Ruilians, Orders are iffued outto the officers of the recruit- ing parties to compleat their men as foon as poffible. Within this week 142 waggons loaded with tents, and other camp equipage, have been lent from the Tower to the Ifle of Wight. Darch 10. The Roaft Beef armed fhip les bro’e into Plymouth the Fox privateer of Dunlirk of 12 guns, which fhe took off the'Lizard. The privateer failed from Dunkirk a few Days fince, but had took nothing. Several captains in the navy fet out yefterday for Portfmouth, to go on board their refpective fhips. Extralt of a Letéer from Portfmeuth. March 9. *¢ The people of Newport, in the l{le of Wight, have made great preparations for a camp that is expcéled there this fpring. Laft Friday night, tour more foreign officers arrived from Germany, to be examined as evidences on Lord George Sackville’s trial. It is geserally tho’c that France will either agree to a peace, or continue the war another year accord- ing to the recepiion which her mew money edicls thall meet with. March 11. Notwithftanding the general conver- {ation goncerning a peace, it is mow certain, that an expedition of the utmoft importance is {o near being put in execution, that the troops that are to be em- ploved therein, have received punétual orders to hold themfelves in readinefs to effect a junilion in four or five days, and then cmbark immediately on board the tranfports ; but we do not hear, tor ceriain, who is to have the fupremz command either of the land or naval forces. Admiral Broderick, with the fleet under his com- mand, was cruificg cff Giorslar, the 1oth ult. We hear the French King has {zitled a penfion of 400 livres per'annum on M. Thurot’s father. The Royal George, Capt. Beamifh, who was taken into the government’s fervice oy Admiral Pocock, has takea the Favourite, bound from the Mauritias to Pondicherry, having on board 40,000 rupees in money, and feveral military cfficers. Bett, from China, we are affured that the Dutch are fully employed in thipping French goods on Dutch bottoms, in order to be bro’t to Europe. , Yefterday morning George Shelvoke, Efq; Secre- tary to the General Poft Office, dropped down in one of the apartments belonging to the Office, and before proper affiftance could be obtained, he expired. On the 24th pait the Magiftrates of Hansu were ordered by the commanding officer of the French troops in the place; to pay, in 24 hours, 750,000 livres. Next morning the magiltrates colleéted 80,000 florins, which they offered him, and begged a delay of fome weeks to pay the reft : but this was abfolutely refufed, and the garrifon having been that day reinforced wich two batfaiions and four iquadrons, the foldiers were diftributed in the principal fquares, and market places, and the gates fhut ; cannon were even pointed againft fome fireets, and to caufe the greater terror, pitched matches were faflened to feveral Loufes, as if they intended to fet the town on fiie ; but all thefe fleps not having produced the effeét exp:&ed, the French commander fent detachments of grenadiers to the houfes of four of the chief magiftrates and merchants, who braught away all the moft valuable effc&s to the town houfe, where the whole continued when the laft letters came away.
