Immediately tpon receiving this Intel- £ .+ ~ligence, his Gracethe Lord Lizutenant gave Orders for the affembling, with the wimoft Ex- pedition at Newry, four Regiments of Infantry, viz. Pole’s, Anftruther’s, Sandford’s, and Sebright’s ; and three. Regiments of Dragoon’s, viz. Moftyn’s, York’s and Whitley’s ; and his Grace made no Doubt, that fliauld the French be hardy encugh to hazard them- felves at any Diltance front their Ships, the Troops he fhould be able to get together in a few Days, wiil be more than fufficient to protect the Country from any Violence, and to drive them out of the Kingdom. And this Morning a farcher Account was receiyed, That Lieut. Col. Jennings had {uffered himfelf, with four Companier of Major General Strode’s Regiment under his Command'at Carrickfergus, to be made Prifoners of War : And that on the z2d in the Morn- ing, about Eight ¢'Clock, a Flag of Truce come to Belfaft, and made a Demand of feveral Articles. of Provifions, ind other Neceflaries, to be delivered that Day at two o'Clock, promifing to pay for them ; and threatning, in cafe of Refufal, to burn Carrickfergus, and afterwards to come up and burn Bzlfaft alfo : With which Demands the Gentlemen of Belfaft thought it beft to comply. LEASE to acquaint the ‘Right Honcurable my - Lords Commiffioners of the Admiralty, that on the 24th Inf. Ireceived informaiion at Kinfale, from his Grace the Lord Licutenant of Ireland, that there were three of the Enemy’s Ships at Carrickiergus. The fame Evening I fatled with his Msjeity’s Ship under my Command, together with the Pallas and Brilliant, in queflt of them.. I madé the Entrance of Carrickfergus on the Evening of the 26th, but could not get in, the Wind being contrary, and very bad Weather. . On the 28th, at four in the Mornirg, we got Sight of them, and gave Chace;, At Nine [ got up along Side their Commodore (off the Ifle of Man) and in a few Minutes after, the Aétion became: ge- peral, and lafted about an Hour and Half, when they all ftrack their Colours. . Thu- rov’sSquadron bearing Northward, tawards Scotland, clofe by tiie Wind : Thataftér the French difcovered the Englifh, they changed their Courfe to the South- ward, hoping to eicape: whereupon the Englifh pur- fued, and about Nine came up with them, . That afrer an Engagemcat of 2n Hour and an Half, the Belleifle fruck ; three Men having been ‘killed in attempting to ftrike the Colours ; during which attempt Monf. Thurot was killed, ten Minutes after his firft Orders to ftrike. Saon after the BElonde allo ftruck ; La Terpfichore, endeavoured to elcape, but was purfued by the Pillas, who foon came up with and took her. ' The Belleifle had 160 men killed and wounded ; the La Blonde about 80 ; and La Terpfichora 2bout 36 ; among whom are four Captains of the Troops they had on board, killed ; and M. Dufalier, she zd in command, wounded. TheEnglifh had but § killed, and only 31 wounded, none of them Officers. o The engagement was between the Mull of Gallo- way, and.the Ifle of Man, and in view of that l{land, the Scotch end Irith Shores. . The Belleifle was wi-h difficuley brought into Ramfay Bay, being fo fhittered as fcarce able to {wim ; and it was once refolved to take the Men on board. ¢ : The Pallas brought abcut 500 Prifoners, 100 of whom are officers, being near all that were with the French Squsdron, who are now landed at Carrick- fergus, and fhe is to retwin to morrow to. join the Squadron. The Occafion of bringing the Prifoners here was to eafe the Ships, to prevent an infeétion from the Number of wounded. . . When the French landed at Carrickfergus, they ¢re quite out of Provifions. They intended to have _been firft at Loadonderry, but the Wind happened to be unfavourable for them. The trial of Lord Charles Hiy was finifhed yeiler- dey, but the court paffed no fentence . We hear that it is to be referred to his Majefty. By a letter from on bosrd the Pallas frigate in Ramfey-bay, dated Feb. 29, we are told that M. Thurot intended to have landed on the Ifle of Man, and raife contributions there, and alfo to have at- tempted taking the thipping at, Liverpool and White- haven, before he returned to France. We hearthat 11 fhips of the line and 4 frigates, with a confiderable number of land forces on board, failed from the ifland Mauritius the 4th of Auguft, on an expedition againft Bombay : Thofe land forces confifted moftly of Indians, difciplined by the French as well as they could. W are likewifé told, that the Dutch being at alofs how to affift the French in the Eaft Indies without coming to an open rupture with Great Britain, have hit upon an expedient, which they think will pafs mufter ; and that was, to declare war againft the Nabob in the Englifh intereft ; in confe- quence of which eight men of war bave failed from Baravia with a good number of land forces on board.
