THE Bridge aforefaid is already built, and vpon 2 Sextlement of the Accounts, and Demands relative thereto, the Managers of the former Lottery for that Purpofe, were found to be greatly in Debt: The Charges of building the Bridge, and profecuting the Lottery, amounting to much more than what was sllowed to be raifed by the former A of the General Court— therefore the prefent Lottery is allowed. ~ And fince the faid Bridge fo well anfwers the Expeltation of the Public; and the Travelling that ‘Way thereby is rendered much more eafy and plea- fant ; the Managers doubt not there will be a great Demand of the Tickets, from a Principle of encou- raging and promoting a Work of fuch general Uiility, if there were no other Inducement. . But when they confider how much this Scheme is calculated in Favour of the Adventurers, there being many Prizes of great Value, and but two Blanks to a Prize ; they doubt not of a very fpeedy Sale of the Tickets. Public Notice will be given of the T'ime and Place of Drawing ; and as foon as finifhed, the Prizes wi'l be publithed in the Boflen Gazette and Country Feurnal. The Shocks began here the 30th of October at Four in the Morning.. The Waters in Ba- fons and Ponds broke over their Bounds, and all things feemed to anounce a general Subverfion. They were felt in the fame Manner at Burut, which is zo Leagues to the South, but were more violent at Attequire, dift- .ant 25 Leagues North: At Sey- de, which is within a League cf the Spot where old Sidon itood, feveral Houfes were thrown down, and many of the Inha- bitants buried in the Ruins. The Camp of the French were corfiderably damaged, but no Body perifhed there, as they all fled into the open Fields. [This Camp we fuppofe, confifted of Booths and Sneds.] At St. Jokn d’Acre, which is 15 Leagues higher up the Country than Sey- de, the Sea broke over its Boun- daries, and the Water flowed into the Streets, though higher by feven or eight Feet than the Level of the Sea,—The City of Saphet, which is ten Leagues beyond that, was totally over- thrown, and mo&t of the Inha- bitants were killed by the Fall of the Houfes. —~The Shocks were terrible atDamafcus, which is three Days Journey from Sey- de : zll the Minarets and abun- dance of Hou'es were thrown down. It is, however, judged that the Focus of the Eartnquake was at Saphet, as the Shocks were but {light at Aleppo, and did then extend nearzooLeagues in Length and Breadth. There were feverdl other Shocks fucceflively till the zgth of November, which did no great Damage ; and we tho’t the Danger was over ; butthe fame Day, at feven in the Evening, we were vificed again with fuch terrible Shocks, that abundance of Buildings were deftroyed, and the People could hardly keep upon their Feet whillt they were running away into the Fields. The next Day, about Four in the Morning the Shocks were renewed, and did ftill more Mifchief ; and” when the Sun was up, we dilcerned the dire Effe&s of them: In the neigh- bouring Villages nothing was to be feen but Heaps of Ruins.
