BOSTON, Scptember 17. By the Courier who arrived laft Thurfday fiom Al- bany, we learn, That Lieut. Fietcher with 10 Men, and one Hopkins,Serjeant Major of theRangeis, with 7 Men, went from Crown Point on a Scout, 2nd had got within a little Way of St. Jsha’s, when they feparated, after agreeing where to meet ata certain Time ; but a Party of the Enemy being cut difcovered Fletcher and his Men, furrounded them, and took them a'l Pri- foners:— That Hopkins’s Party, difcovering the Ezemy they all feparated ; however, after {ome Hours Hop kins with four others got together, when they dif- covered the Enemy’s Encampment on an liland about 8 Miles this Side St. John's, where they faw their Mo tions, and obferved three Men coming downto the Water, who were going to Filla, and no fooner had they began, than Hopkins with his Men rua into the Water about Breaft high, and brought them off, not- withftanding their hallowing, which alarmed the E- nemy, who were feen to be very numerous on the Ramparts, they being within Gun Shot ; but the E- nemy did not fire for fear of killing their owa Men : —Thele Prifoners {2y, That the French are 4oc0 ftrong on this !fland, bave 1oo Pieces of Cannon there well planted, where they defign to make a Stand ; they alfo informed of Lieut, Fletcher and his Party being tzken, who gave latelligence of him, ard that a Paity was out in order to Way lay him, but luckily he did not leave his Wha'e Boats where he determined to meet Fietcher, and by that Means efca- ped ; for he fcarcely pat off beforethe Enemy ap- peared and fired upos him, but did no Damage ; one of the Men that feparated bad got to Crown-Point, the other two are miffing :—And that the Enemy had laoncheda large Man of War, in order to aitack cur Vefiuls of Force on the Lake. We hear from feveral Parts of Conneflicut, that a great Number of Bears have late'y come down among them, and have done much Milchief among the Corn, aifo deftroyed foms Hogs. It hasbeen re marked there, that whenever thefs Bears make their Apperance there, a prodigious Number of Squirrels over {pread that Country (none know from whence) efpecially of the black fort, which at other Times are fcarcely even feen ; it is certain that now, that Pro- vince {warins with thefe Creaturss, Saturday laft an Exprefs returned from Crown Point, where he was fent with Difp:iches from his Excellency our Governor to General Amherit, on the firlt Advice received fromn Quebeck, which was the 3d Inftant ; the other Exprefs with the Difpatches brought by the Duana Frigate, which arrived the 4th, had not reach’d Crown-Point when this came away, which was Yefter- day 7 night in the Afternoon—By him we learn, That the General with his Army ftill continued there, very bufy in finithing the fine Fort erected at that Place— that the Army has been fo remarkable healthy, that ooly 1 Man cf the fix regular Regiments had died a natura! We hear from Norwalk in Coanefticut, that one Mr. Daniel Seymour of that Flace, being out a Gun- ning for Pidgeons, by fome Accicent his Gun went cff and fhot him thro’ the upper Part of his Leg, which broke the Bone to Pieces, {o that there was a Neceffity to take ¢ ff his Leg above the Knee, notwithflarding which, he expired in an Hour or two after, leaving a forrowful Widow and feveral Children.
